World Cup 2006 Prediction Thread

I thought it be cool for people whoa re interested to post their predictions
and then checking how much you got right, you could get points or something
Its just for fun and this is just the plannign thread, i'll mnake the other thread as soon as we establish some rules
for the points:
you get X number of points if your prediction comes true, with increasing increments for each round of play (i.e. you'll get a lot more points for predicting the final right than for predicting a quarter-final)
We could either do predictions for the round that is currently being played, or we could predict the whole chapionship
the first option might be easier for people who don't know the teams as well as others. (im leading towards the first one because the toher might be too complicated)
soo, anyone is interested/got suggestions for this?

Hmmm, a spot on match save I think Australia are going to shock the Croats, they put in a tough performance against the Dutch and beat the Greeks in their warm ups and to me look like a good side. I'm not sure if Croatia still cut it these days.

YEah, but Greece didn't even qualify, and Austalia comes from a really bad area, with almost no good national teams, they lack the experience of European or South American teams

LOL, I was an English man in Germany during Euro '96. The odds were against me the next day, but I lived through the pain and torment.
I was also there for the 5-1 mauling in 2000 :D Revenge is so very sweet. Esp. when a good team conceeds to Emile Heskey.
EDIT: I like a few players, Duff, Cole (both of em), Terry, Lampard, Gudjonson, Huth (although he's moving), Cech, Cudicini. I just hate pretentious bastards who think that every time a touch is made, they go down, but when the ref sees through them and doesn't give the foul, then throw a fit about it. If robben or SWP came near me on a footie pitch and fell over, I would make sure next time I would give them a reason to fall over.

Cameroon have always looked like a good side as far back as I can remember although I wouldn't have remembered them in Italy 90 since I was only 5 at the time. I did have a look at Ivory Coasts performance in the warm ups and have to say that I was distinctly underwhelmed by their draws with Chile and Switzerland. Still, Senegal's performance in the last W.C just sprang to mind and it occurred to me that perhaps I ought to at least see them play before I write them off.

I was comparing the quality of the current Ivory Coast team to that of the Cameroons team of 16 years ago. Their recent victory over cameroons is irrelevant as you say.
Why does everyone seem to rate Juan Roman Riquelme. Come on people, Barcelona shipped him out and brought in Van Bommel in his place. He is OK over a dead ball, but in open play he is a liability to any team.

Seriously,
What is your problem with the dutch? Out of all of our warm-up matches, we have yet to lose a match. And I agree that Van Basten line-up might be a little controversial (leaving out makaay, davids and some other prominent players.) But we still have Cocu, Bronckhorst, van Bommel, Van the man, Robben ,(who, although we are not very proud of him after his "performance" in england, is still a fantastic player) and the new arsenal wonder: Van Persie.
I thik we should at least be able to beat Cote d'ivor, though I agree that Argentina might be a little much.

I've seen him play twice - once against England in a friendly and once for Sevilla in the champions league Semis. He was average against Arsenal but against England he was utterly phenomenal, he looked like he was going to make something happen every time he got the ball and it seemed like not one of our players were capable of getting near him. By all accounts the guy has trouble with consistency but he can be, and often is, phenomenal. I can't wait to see him in the world cup.

I've seen about a dozen matches where he has played, and to be honest I cannot remember one where he hasn't appeared to think that he is God's gift to football and done jack shit.
The semi final against Arsenal was typical of his performances that I have seen. Maybe he can turn it on once in a while, but that is not enough, you have to perform every week, every match, if you want to be great.

Fix. The dictator of a military Junta visiting a dressing room of a team playing his own country in a game where his own country must win. Which they do. Hmmmm.
Quite frankly, it wasn't anything to do with the Argentinian team, just those in power. Another reason why politics should NEVER interfere with football.

Germany Costa Rica.

Both games will be defensive and will give me time to gets oem shut eye.

Dude, you stand a very very good chance of getting passed the pool matches sure you'll struggle against Brazil but you drew with Neanderthal so you should get some points against Japan and Croatia well Australias honour is at stake, you have a large enough Croat population in Australia that you must win to keep them in their place otherwise there will be riots and vandalism like last year when 2 club teams played each other.

Hehe. A funny marketing campaign by Nike that they're running here. A nasty old man called "History" doesn't like the Socceroos (he's a Brazil fan).
Particularly have a look at the TV spots in the bar at the top.

Sweden - T&T: Result - Incorrect / Score - Incorrect (wong by 3 goals)
Argentina - Ivory: Result - Correct / Score - Incorrect (wrong by 1 goal

I don't know, he ain't in the squad and he was pretty fat at the last world cup.

Well, how are your predictions going?
So far I have correctly picked Group A (Germany, Ecuador) and Group B (England, Sweden). The other groups seem mostly on track, except it looks like I missed out by going with the Ivory Coast (Group C), the U.S. (Group E - sentimental pick), Croatia (Group F) and Ukraine (Group H) to pick up the second spot in their groups.

I messed up with Poland, but meh.
As to the others, The Ivory Coast will still finish second in their group, but I messed up by picking Holland not Argentina to win it.
Croatia and Ukraine will both finish second. They have played and lost to the teams that will finish first in each case.

Before Serbia's loss they hadn't lost in there last 4 games (3 wins) i think and only allowed 1 goal in qualifying.

Uhm, that was aimed at the lame game yesterday afternoon - after you predicted a borefest I told the players to get their act together and play football.
The other stuff was meant to be for those who had asked for World Cup songs and I figured they might drop in and take a look at that during halftime.
That's all, carry on ;)
I'd laugh if France lost.

I love Paraguay too bits as an underdog team but they needed the Chilavert, he was the only reason(Apart from Spain sucking in '98 and Nelson Cuevas coming off the bench against Slovakia when Paraguay were a man down to score a double??? in '02) that Paraguay made the last two 2nd rounds.
