Because most people, upon hearing that Nationstates is reality only on the internet, become immediately dismayed and depressed and end the suffering quickly. I, oddly, flourish in this environment anyway, so I'm immune to its siren call of death.

I guess that's the "vocal minority" effect. According to various polls, the majority of NSers aren't gay (or lesbian). But people who are either homosexuals or homophobes tend to answer more often to threads on this subjet. So you perceive most NSers to be homosexuals or homophobes, just because the heterosexuals who have no problem with homosexuals tend to not voice their opinion.

Anyway, I am heterosexual, and I do support homosexuals having the same rights than heterosexuals, and being treated with the same respect than heterosexuals.

I can see maybe if all you read in your short time here is gay themed threads you might get that impression-perhaps if you read The Babe Thread you might get the impression that we are all teenage boys that are disproportionally into japanese models. Or the war fetish threads that we where all GI Joe wannabes or Stalinist hippies. Or if you read only the relious thread that we where made up of religious zealots and pissed off atheists.
