Seriously, there have been some pretty piss poor offerrings over the years, however could anyone provide links to either 2006 songs, or particularly inspired tracks from previous competitions.

The Hamilton's song *nod*.

The only good one was "Three Lions". And it was only good in 1996. The rereleases in '98 and '02 just took the piss.

Is the Hamilton's song the classic Scottish entry claiming that Scotland would win?

No, no...the one that Neil and whatsherface Hamilton have done this year. It's atrocious.

What about World In Motion ('90)? Who can forget the John Barnes rap?

Okay, I just *have* to spread the love for this song (http://www.aol.de/index.jsp?cid=391571635&sg=Musik_special_Groenemeyer) (do not click "Download" but the little "Video ansehen" link a bit below it) - which happens to be the official FIFA world cup anthem, which I only learned when they said it in the opening ceremony.

Writing and lead vocals by Herbert Grönemeyer, who is one of the not-all-too-numerous decent German singers.

I *love* it. It's not schmaltzy and Celine-Dion-y or anything and it totally gives me goosebumps.

And the video - pure awesomeness. It has all the legendary soccer stars, and great goals, and the Queen looking like Big Bird, and Andi Brehme shooting us to world champion in '90, and some guy yelling "GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL!", and, for an all too fleeting moment, even the beloved bug eyes of Pierluigi Colina. Oh, Pierluigi, how I miss thee.

Color me happy. :)

So, everybody go click on the link and be happified.

And if you hate it, I don't want to hear about it. So there.

Some of that old footage is very cool. I wish I could understand the lyrics.

Oh, well, they're rather stream-of-consciousness-y (surprisingly enough for an official hymn, which tend to be rather straightforward).

The title and chorus "Zeit, dass sich was dreht" basically means something like "It's time to get moving!".

I do love the African French parts in the song, which are a bit more directly about the world cup, if I haven't forgotten my French.

Oh, and for those who haven't yet watched the video: it has Ronaldo in the fugliest haircut ever - you *know* you want to see that, right? Right?

Hey there ;)
I have to admit that as long as I've only heard what they play on TV I wasn't all that fond of Herbert. But now that I've seen the video (thank you!) I've changed my mind. The song is good and the video is great!

I love you.
I have been thinking about this for the past week.
Vindaloo was awesome and That Chumbawumba song tubthumping.

I think they missed a golden oppurtunity by not using Dope Nose by Weezer for the last World Cup, Japan loves Weezer and in the video they had Japs on Motorbikes what if it had been Football Players?
What if.:(

It is no wonder Football is considered a poof sport with all the diving kiddie touching and weak music.

Yes, I know that Scotland aren't in the World cup, but that doesn't stop us from having our own World Cup song..........
