I need to learn to cook oatmeal, but my first attempt was rather blah. Do you have any recipes to spice it up?

I'm not a big fan of it. At least not in the eating of it.

Oatmeal is nothing but a projectile to me. :)

add cinammon, maybe some preserves, or dried fruit to the cooking process.

Well, if you add a couple of fried eggs, some bacon, some sausage, some ham, some pork roll, and some home fries to it, it's still bland, but you've got plenty of tasty stuff to eat instead.

Ouch :)

I need to lose weight, and it's one of the few 'recommended' breakfast foods that's palatable. I was thinking oatmeal with scrambled eggs mixed in...

Okay, take out the bacon, sausage, ham, pork and fries and that might do... :)

Seriously. The only way I like oatmeal is if I can mix in some maple syrup. Real maple syrup, not the synthetic stuff sold by Mrs. Butterworth or Aunt Jemimah. Those two cunts wouldn't know syrup if they had to toss a convict's salad.

Raisins, maple syrup, cream/h&h/milk, brown sugar.

Any, or all of the above will help.

Well, maybe the delivery will make the meal more exciting.

Construct a small catapult and use it to launch small handfuls of oatmeal at yourself. Breakfast should be fun. :)

Haha!

...I looked up catapult prices and found this. http://www.stupid.com/stat/PCAT.html

But ebay (http://cgi.ebay.ca/Marx-Catapult-Lot_W0QQitemZ6063653766QQcategoryZ19213QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) has one. ;)

It's very simple but the trick is to add enough salt.

Bingo! All starches (oatmeal, rice, potatoes, etc.,) require salt to be used while cooking them. Adding salt after cooking just makes for salty goo around bland solid bits.

Other methods for boosting the flavor of oatmeal: Toast the oatmeal in a dry pan at medium/medium-high or a pan with a bit of butter. Stir/toss constantly, and then prepare as usual (don't forget the salt!)

I find oats go better with brown sugar than with ordinary sugar. All of the sweet spices (cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, ginger, cloves, cardamon etc.,) go with oatmeal. Fruit, of course, fresh or dried.

Oats make a good crust for chicken or fish. Pat the fish or chicken dry. Season the meat (salt, pepper, spices.) Roll in flower. Dip in an egg or milk (also seasoned,) wash. Roll in oats. Pan fry or bake.

I was thinking of butter, cream, brown sugar, dried cranberries and pecans.

or:

1 cup sugar
1 cup packed brown sugar
1 cup butter
2 eggs

Cream them together and add

1 tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp vanilla
1 1/2 tsp cinnamon

mix in thoroughly and gradually add and mix in

2 cups flour

when thoroughly mixed add

3 cups oatmeal

mix thoroughly and add

as much of dried cranberries and pecans as seems good to you.

mix together until well blended

spread in a greased jelly roll pan.

bake in a 350^F oven for 4 minutes.

remove, cool and cut into bars - great for breakfast, lunch or snack.

My porridge recipe:

1/2 a cup of rolled oats

1 & 1/4 cups of milk

2 minutes in the microwave on high.

Stir.

A further 1 & 1/2 minutes in the microwave on high.

Let it stand for 3 minutes.

Stir in a spoonful of honey or golden syrup.

It's what I have for breakfast most mornings.

Me thinks you are cooking it too quickly and with no salt.

Good oatmeal porrige is best slow cooked in semi skimmed milk with a generous dash of salt. Add dried fruit, syrup et al to taste.

I never add salt when cooking it, but you can do it if you want. The salt will help it to cook maybe a minute faster. I personally prefer to cut the sodium out, because typically you get more than enough during the day.

When the oatmeal is just about done cooking, I like to add a little brown sugar and cinnamin. Before eating I like to add a little milk for cooling and flavor, and I like to add fruit. Blueberries and/or rasberries are good, or a sliced bannana also goes nicely.

I'm with you there except I take salt in my porridge not honey/golden syrup and use 1/2 cup rolled oats + 1/2 cup water+ 1/2 cup milk
