The theft of a data file from a persons home has caused a large chunk of personal information to be leaked out.

Personally I find this to be BS, anyone handling sensitive information like this is criminally incompetent to remove it from the premises much less taking it to their home. Physically security is a very real part of the computer world, and this employee wantonly ignored it.

I agree beside this guy losing his job he should also have criminal charges filed against him. What worries me the most is that not only active duty people’s information is on the disks, it includes information on retired military people as well, and that affects me and not I watch my credit report and finances much more closely then before. I know several people that have been victims of identity theft, and it is a real hassle to get it fixed and your identity back, as well as taking several years having to deal with it and the bad credit not being able to buy a new car and so on.

Identity theft should be made into a very serious crime. Many times these people (the identity thieves) get a slap on the wrist, probation and a fine and they are on there way, no matter how much they damaged someone’s life or finances. It causes so much hardship and it hurts not only the victim, but it also makes prices go up, because
businesses have to cover there costs thus they rise prices and we all pay for that, these identity thieves should be sent to prison for a long time (10-15 years at least) for the first offence.
