Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez personally took delivery of a first shipment of 30,000 AK-103 Russian rifles in Caracas on Sunday as made public his intentions to buy Russian-made Sukhoi Su-35 fighters to replace American aircrafts. Chavez made clear that the new weaponry was only to defend the country from any foreign attack as ruled out any aggressive intentions against Venezuela's neighbours

Looks like another cuban crisis but the mother lode is oil.

Hmmm... Cuban Crisis, the USSR move nuclear arms to Cuba, within easy striking distance of the US. The US and the USSR get into a staring contest that brings the world one second to midnight on the doomsday clock before the USSR blinks and withdraws.

Chavez gets some Russian fighter jets and rifles.

何だHell? Where do you see the comparison?

I'll bet that President Chavez is too tired and bone weary to even make a silly speech after he unloaded 30000 rifles off of the Russian freighter.

No. That's a few rifles and a few short range fighter aircraft. Not a big deal.

Even more interesting is the fact that Chavez is spending money on these sorts of things when he could be spending that money on the poor people who elected him.

The rifles and aircraft are just in case the poor get the idea that Chavez is screwing them.

Heh. I don't think he's a threat to the world, but I do think it is hypocritical of him to spend money on brand new military equipment instead of injecting it into social programs.

You may think of militia-level brand new military equipment as looking pretty much as the start of yet another ( and rather special ) social program, so to speak.
