I believe you need to buy the software, but from what I understand, there is no subscription.

Oh, thats neat. I want to try out some of these games you play online with a bunch of folks, but I'm on a laptop and I don't think most of them will work out too well.

And of course, there's tons of webgames, like utopia, quantum-star, kings of chaos, etc. Which don't depend on any graphics, and you can practically run them on your phone. Just letters and numbers mostly. But you might not like that kind of game. (On the other hand, if you like nation states, perhaps you do.)
Online? Pfft. Play roguelikes.

All are freeware.

I liked adom a lot, so tome instantly intrigued me, but:
which of the many downloads is required to play the game? CouldnĀ“t find it in the faq, thxgghfcu.

They're just different versions.
Current (February '06) alpha version (http://www.t-o-m-e.net/dl/win/tome-300alpha3-win.zip)
Slightly older (December '05 stable version (http://www.t-o-m-e.net/dl/win/tome-233-win.zip)
The stable one should do you just fine - i've been playing an for well over a year at any rate, and didn't have any problems with versions before that. I'm not sure what they added in the latest release, though. EDIT - a few relatively minor changes. Try the alpha, it probably won't crash anyway. If you have problems, try the other. It doesn't really matter.
