Today is Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals.

The Participants?

Representing the Eastern Conference is your Carolina Hurricanes.

Representing the Wetern Conference is your Edmonton Oilers.

Who do you think is going to win and why?

For me Carolina because they are still hot whereas Edmonton has had a very long layoff.

what do you all think?

Oilers. I mean, holy hell, they were last seeded in the conference and they knocked out the Red Wings and have made it all the way to the finals. They're on a roll D:!!!

Now if only the Predators would do the same and make my dreams come true...

Oilers; of the two teams, the Oilers are the ones who've been playing playoff hockey, a week long layoff isn't gonna stop 'em. The Oilers fought kicking and screaming to get as far as the have, some bohick Carolina team ain't gonna slow 'em down.

Nope. I do not at all care for the NBA. Hockey though is a different Story.

Go Carolina :D

Here's a hint Nazz, root for both teams. I had the samething happen to me in the AFC Championship Game during the NFL playoffs. I'm a huge Denver Fan but live near pittsburgh (which is my #2 team). I couldn't lose either way :D

and you can't like more than one sport? Yes, Sox are important. However, Bruins can sell out the majority of their games, despite having had a horrible season (Oh hell, it's been a horrible decade). Not even most of the Canadian teams can do that.

Is Roloson out for good? What's the word on that? I bet Bergeron got a phenomenal ass chewing for that check...frickin' idiot thing to do, but ah shit, accidents happen. Honestly, I think it's going to be a pretty close series. Sure, the Oil had a long sit time, which I think worked against Anaheim in the last series, but then again, they sorely needed the rest. The Hurricanes came in fast and furious on this first game, but I'm hoping the lack of rest will work against them, and start slowing them down. The big factor here is Rollie...will he be in or out? Also...Pisani left the first period...how is he?

Damn it. I didn't stick around to watch the after-game spiel...SI reports (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/hockey/nhl/specials/playoffs/2006/06/05/bc.hkn.oilers.rolosonin.ap/index.html?section=si_latest) say he'll stay out...but we'll see. To be honest, I didn't see the hit at first, and thought Rollie was pulling a Drama King...he does about one per game, usually to get a breather for the team...but that was a brutal hit. I wonder though...and I'm really reaching here...if they put him back in game 2 just to psych out the Hurricane in the meantime? But I'm kind of doubting it. Cripes...and poor Conklin on that empty-net goal...he went in cold, there is really no way he was going to measure up. Frick.

I know quite a few Americans who are cheering for the Oilers actually. That's because Edmonton has long been the training ground for rookies, who then move onto star positions in US teams when we could no longer afford them. I don't mean that in a bitter way, but the Oilers have a fantastic training regimine, and scout talent like no one else. Look at the more recent trades of Roloson, Pronger and Peca...McTavish almost got shitcanned for that because they didn't come in like pros...but they've fit into the team well, and they've really been performing.

You find former Oilers all over the damn place...did you see Doug Weight applauding Pronger's penalty shot goal?

Don't give it away yet.

Anyway, I'm pissed because I just found out the local cable channel won't be carrying the other games live at 9 am local time but tape delayed at midnight. I have a shared TV, and it's glued to the World Cup between 10 pm and 6 am every night for the next month. I'd cause a riot if I tried to change the channel....

And my response, as quoted is a response to a fellow region-mate who also feels like leaving the Oilers behind...

Jumping ship are we? I figured most fans would be amazed they made it as far as they have, the Stanley Cup. Let's repeat that, THE STANLEY CUP, the greatest hockey trophy on this planet. I, for one, am proud to be an Oilers fan even if they do not win. They were the under-dogs of this tournament, getting in on a technicality and now they are one of two teams left. Instead of getting off the bandwagon, let's stay on and show the Oilers , whether or not they win, the fans still love 'em for playing true playoff hockey.

Face off is in 10.5 hours and N.C. is getting ready for the big show.

Will Carolina send Edmonton home crying or will Edmonton pull off a stunning comeback and win the cup?
Sinuhue

There are a couple factors here.

One: the Oilers aren't doing anything that won them the Western Conference. They aren't winning the face offs, they aren't covering the opposing net and blocking the golie's view, they aren't protecting their own goal they way they used to. Bring that back, and they have a fighting chance...keep skating around like meth-heads in a dryer, and forget it.

Two: Carolina didn't have much of a break before the Eastern Conference and the finals. They seem to be winding down. Now if they can win it tonight, it won't matter, but if the Oil can hold out this one game, I think the Canes will have peaked.

Everyone, including myself, thought that Rollie going out was going to kill the Oilers. Well Jussi has stepped up, and it's the Oilers killing the Oilers now. They need to want this bad enough. Get Laraque back out there, standing in front of the Cane's goal...you can't stop the goals you can't see, and Laraque's a big boy. Kick Hemsky's ass and get him to MAKE THE DAMN SHOT! Actually, kick everyone's ass and get them to make the shot...too much passing in the Cane's zone, and they lose it constantly. The Oiler's powerplay has never been great, but it's become bloody abysmal lately. MOVE!

If they can just get it together for this game, I think they'll have a chance. But I'm not holding my breath.

In any case, they won the Western Conference, and they made it this far...to me, anything above just making it to the finals is gravy.

I'm a Sabres fan who has had a chance to watch 'Canes playoff hockey for a couple of weeks now. I'm not thrilled with southern hockey (even though I've lived in Florida for 25 years now, I still pulled for the Flames in the last Cup), but I can tell you if this Carolina team wins the Cup they deserve to call themselves the NHL's best. They are talented, fast, hard hitting, and have heart. They effectively shut down the power play of both Buffalo and Edmonton, two of the best in the league during the regular season.

Hockey in the south doesn't seem right, but this southern hockey team is wicked good.

The refs let Edmondton slide way too much. Mind you, all the other teams in the series had their share of leniency, but I've seen hooks and interferences go unpunished way too many times on the Oilers' side. Hell, during the seventh game, there was a couple of offsides that the refs comletely ignored, and it was in Carolina, too. Maybe refs in general need to keep their eyes open more.

The refs were sporadic throughout this series. In some games they seemed to be on everything...though they'd call hooking in one case, and ignore another more obvious situation right in front of their eyes. The calls can really swing the game, and there were some bad calls against Edmonton, and against Carolina on a number of occasions. This last game they seemed to just be sitting back and letting the game go...but it wasn't that way in previous games. Was it game 5 that had just a ridiculous number of penalties on both sides? I don't know about keeping their eyes open, but some consistency in the calls would be nice and refreshing.

Did anyone else think Cam Ward was a little awestruck in receiving the Conn Smythe trophy? He had a look about him that said "Gee, this is cool. I could get used to this."
Yeah, he did look a bit dazed.

Oh, I just noticed your location tag. Yes, I know where Alliston is. My sister was born there. :)

The Carolina Hurricanes are a member of the National Hockey League and have every right to win the Cup should they deserve it and they did.

Yeah, he did look a bit dazed.

I couldn't stop laughing when I saw it. He's a good kid.

 My it's a small world. TG me who your sister is (if you wish)- I just may know who this person is (I've been sadly stuck in this downtrodden town for 13 years. :( ).

There's also a good chance the Cup's coming to New Techumseth: Jim Rutherford, the Hurricanes' General Manager, is from Beeton.

Man the only reason the Oilers lost was because Rollo got injured. I know that sounds like a sore loser but I really wanted the Oilers to win. Actually I wanted the Devils to win but Oilers were my second favorite to win.

It's true the Edmonton Oilers took a while to be confident in Jussi Markkanen but once they did it was the same old Oilers that won the last three rounds. Besides, Dwayne Roloson was in net when the tying goal was scored in Game 1, so I doubt this series would have gone differently if he was in net. I feel bad for him though- here was his chance to really play in the Stanley Cup Final (he was in the Finals before but as a backup to Domonik Hasek of the 1999 Buffalo Sabres) and he injures his knee. Tough break.

(You know, I wonder if the Carolina Hurricanes have a voodoo doll or something- top players seem to fall when they play them: Saku Koivu in Round 1, Jay McKee/Henrik Tallinder/Teppo Numminem in Round 3 and Roloson in Round 4. Hmmmmnnnnn....)

Excuse me? How pray tell do you believe that the Hurricanes didn't deserve the cup? They outplayed the Oilers from start to finish and had a goalie that made one more fantastic save than the Oilers Goalie.

I think you are a troll.

*sarcasm* Damn Canadian losers *sarcasm*

Winning Lord Frederick Stanley's Cup is still one of the ultimate conquests in sports. Congrats to the Carolina Hurricanes.
