What ohhh no, ohh gosh, so 17% of students in the States listen to a certian type of music. Shit we have never had anything like that before. Not even in the 60's with the Mods and Rockers, nor in the 70's with Punk, nor the 80's with the whole Grunge thing, or Rap or Big Haired Rock, nor the 90's(okay actualy the 90's was pretty shit for music) But here at last in the 00's we have youth listening to a type of music that touches them on a personal level, jeeez who'da thunk it huh!!:D

What's with the instant connection with emo and self-harm? Self-harm has existed long before emo, and there is nothing in the emo ethos to glorify harming oneself.

I'm not an emo myself, but I think you're making this unneccessarily frivolous by relating it to these levels.

Legitimate pyschologically driven self harming is fairly rare. The emo "If I cut myself I can get attention" crap however is just pathetic and stupid. Gangrene on all of them!

Indeed. But I'd say that selfharm purely for attention is fairly rare. Or at least I'll give people the benefit of the doubt - I'd rather sympathise with someone who didn't deserve it, than mock and judge someone with a serious problem.

Who are you to say what causes people to selfharm? How do you know?

Quite simply, you don't.

It is normaly teenagers and young adults, and it normaly stops as the huge overhaul of hormones settle and the ravages of teenagerhood subsides.

I used to selfharm in a mild form, but was never emo.
I know a few emos who don't selfharm and aren't depressed or whiney - they simply like the music and clothes.
I know someone who selfharmed and became emo.

I know noone who became emo, and than started selfharming.
I believe people who do selfharm/have emotional problems, turn to the emo-subculture where they won't be rejected or seen as freaks. I don't believe people selfharm to fit in with that subculture-they'd be a very very very small minority.

I know two people who self harm. One does it for attention, one did it for pyschological reasons. Thought by cutting himself atleast he'd be in control of his pain. His upper arms are a lattice work of scars where he spent years cutting, hiding it with his clothes. When he's wearing a shirt you'd never know. The attention whore likes to cut his forearms. It gets attention. He goes for long superfical scratches that look very impressive but don't scar. He makes no effort to cover his cuts.

There's a difference between the two. The emo-attention whore wants people to see it, people who actually cut themselves don't. They're often ashamed of it.

A lack of concealing could mean the person's simply stopped caring about anything much (likely when selfharm links to depression), it could be part of the attitude of being proud of what you've gone through (not supporting selfharm in any way, but deciding to look at the scars as signs of experiences you've managed to get past, instead of as something to be ashamed of), it could be seeking attention mixed with an actual need for attention due to serious problems...

Cutting on the forearms can simply be due to hearing about selfharm in that form and feeling an urge to do the same thing or accidentally harming yourself in that place, feeling the rush, getting addicted and getting in that habit.

Superficial scratching on the surface may simply be because they can't bring themselves to cut or scratch that deep - not because they want it to look impressive without the pain.

There's various possible reasons for such behaviour other than simply being an attention-whore.

Sure, what you say may be true as a generalisation. But, as I said, I'd rather give someone the benefit of the doubt rather than mock/judge/isolate someone who needs help and support.

Also, none of what you said explains to me how you know the behaviour of everyone in the study you linked to.

Among the Ivy League students who harmed themselves, about half said they'd experienced sexual, emotional or physical abuse that researchers think can trigger self-abuse.
Yep.... Those pathetic people with no real problems doing it for attention...
