when people talk to each other, strange phrases appear at the end or begining of sentances which are for the most part redundant. many sentances start with 'to be honest' etc...... this annoys me. does anyone share my frustration, or practises these unforgivable traits. this thread at the end of the day can delve into the practises of formal, informal conversations. or can disappear into the ether.......

To be fair, I think I'm right in saying, that the people who use these redundancy aren't bad people. I don't know, lighten up, you know what I mean.

I always dislike the, "Well it goes without saying,..."
If it goes without saying, then don't say it!
Really what should happen is when someone says, "Well it goes without saying,..." they should then just stand there quietly for a few minutes not saying what it goes without saying.
Things would be so much quieter and more pleasant.

This thread reminds me of a shirt I want:
Department of Redundancy Department

Descartes said "I dont think.." and before he said another thing he disappeared completely. Nobody is sure where he went. Nor was there any popcorn involved.

I heard a theory about this the other day, it was all about rythm. Wjhen we talk to each other it does follow a rythm, and phrase like the ones you suggest are fillers to maintian that rythm. So I guess a large part of it is subconciouse.

Good point.
Maybe it's just we want to jump into the conversation before someone else takes it over, yet haven't the faintest idea what the hell we want to say.
So we fill up the first few seconds with cliche until our brains can sort our thoughts out.
Wouldn't be at all surprised to find that ppl who are more visual do it more often. They prob need more time for their brains to order their (visual) thoughts into spoken word.

You know what rocks about that? I came up with that theory years ago. I had pretty much nothing but what I grabbed out of the air to back it up so no one cared, but that 'legit' people also had the theory and have all that whatever to back thier argument means I don't have to do any of the work that I wasn't going to do anyway to back up that assumption.

It does happen a lot. I've used it to give myself time to think and as a means of getting into a conversation.

I never heard of that theory. Do you know of any reference material for it?

It bugs me when people say 'like' and 'basically' a lot.

Here's the one that makes me crazy: "Well, like I said, ..." followed by a repeat of everything they just said, as if I didn't hear it the first time, as if it would be two hard to have an original 2nd thought, as if it bore repeating, as if it wasn't already a statement of the obvious on the first go around, as if to remind themselves what they just said, and as if I care......

Shit. A friend of mine does this so that I won't have a chance to get a word in edgewise. It goes like this: "blah, blah, blah, blah, yeah, and, so, yeah, blah, blah, blah, blah, yeah, and, so, yeah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah..."

Sometimes I just interrupt her and say, "OK ENOUGH ABOUT YOU. LETS TALK ABOUT ME."
