Probably, those are the types of people that chavs model themselves on, as they are simply wannabes it makes our chavs even more pathetic.

One thing I've noticed about chavs is they always go about in groups of about 7, any less and they're too weak to do anything (it takes 7 of them ganging up on a single person) but any more and they will fight amongst themselves.:headbang:

Typical "Ravers" where I'm from include Goth, Punk, and Emo kids. Now "Club Hoppers" definately include Chavs and Wiggers. Being Canadian, I have never heard the terms "chav" or "gaff" before. Gaff is a bit cool, though, believe it or not it's exotic for me. In a few months I will be moving out on my own (I am currently in a university residence), so I am going to have to name my place. I was leaning toward 'pad' but that is so cliché I may have to pick "gaff" instead. Who knows, perhaps when the time comes I will make a poll about it.

It's not taking shots at them because they're poor, it's taking shots at them because they're scum. I was travelling on a bus the other day and this 13-year old chav accused me of staring at him and when I denied this he quickly became aggressive and verbally abusive.

Now I realise of course with hindsight, that rather than becoming angry myself (as was the case) I should have attempted to understand the underlying injustices and root causes of the poor youngster, after all, it's not his fault that he's such a semen stain on the quilt of humanity, but rather the fault of society.

We see A times editorial put it very well when it stated: "We laugh at the underclass for the same reason we laugh in wartime and after appalling disasters: because if we didn’t we’d only cry." Yet the function is not solely to make us laugh, the function is to mock them into extinction.

However this chav at least 15 years old starts being verbally abusive to my sister. We ignore it and carry on walking. This chav then finds it necessary to nudge my little sister. She starts crying. Needless to say it made me angry so I did a public service of shutting him up with my fist. So to those who didn't believe chavs are scum I ask you what kind of person picks on an 8 year old girl?

Because you've learned that you can't judge a race on the actions of an individual person- the same logic should be applied to loose cultural groupings.

Right, amongst chavs there is clearly a tendency towards violence. Now why is this? Well theres probably two main types of violence- for economic reasions and for fun.
When it comes to economic reasons the violence is pretty simple to see- the hard fact is that chav is a poor, working class youth culture. It is also a culture that is obsessed with money and physical displays of wealth. Most of these kids are obviously going to be unable to afford the chains, rings, expensive trainers, etc, so they are going to get the money for it by any means necessarry. I can already hear the cries of "They should get jobs!" from you rightwingers, but think about it. The minimum wage for 16 and 17 year olds in this country is £3.00 an hour and we know that when you first enter a job you are unlikely to get a great deal more than that. So the choice for these kids is work 8 hours, make between about 25 and 40 quid or spend about 5 minutes robbing somebody and making over double that. Pretty understandable.

Now when it comes to this idea of fighting just for kicks I think the issue has to be split into two. First, why are those kids so bored? Second, why do they see violence as a way of alleviating it? Well, I dunno about anybody else in Britain but theres fuck all to do where I live. Everything costs money thats worth doing, and becomes more expensive yearly. In short, if you've got fuck all cash then you've got fuck all to do.
So why is violence their solution? Because it's free, it can actually be quite fun, it can bolster your reputation and because it's what all their favourite mediocre rappers do.

There, thats my take on why there is a bond between chaviness and violence.

Now, as for people calling these kids scum. Not all of them are bad people, believe it or not. I don't even think the majority are. I think that because there are so many chavs (it's blatantly the biggest youth culture in Britain today) that there are naturally more violent people within the group, so more people are likely to have had a nasty dealing with a chav or know someone who has. Think about it this way, even ignoring the violent nature of chav culture let's just have a little example.
Lets say theres a town with 500 chavs and 50 punks. And now lets say that 1 out of every 50 people in this town is violent (its a bit of a shit town). The non-aligned citizens are for more likely to see a chav acting violently than a punk. Therefor they come to associate all chavs with these traits. Thats basically whats happening now.

Also, you should just keep in mind that it's not always a choice to be a chav. If you grow up in a housing estate where everyone around you is a chav and you know that due to your shit education you're unlikely to leave the area ever, you're gonna want to be close to these people. This means picking up their style to avoid being seen as weird and an outsider. It's just a way of fitting in for them.

I totally agree with every thing you said, DHomme. I was piss-taking earlier about being a chav, but I have nothing against them. I come from a working-class background, so natually I have many chav friends. Despite being an obvious geek, they've all seen my stacks of books, games and roleplaying manuals, I am accepted by them. (Well, I do get teased on occasion but that's all in good fun). The reason I think they act so aggressive towards other non-chavs, is not because you are different, but because you generaly look down on them. Who wouldn't be angry with that? It is also a culture that is obsessed with money and physical displays of wealth. Most of these kids are obviously going to be unable to afford the chains, rings, expensive trainers, etc, so they are going to get the money for it by any means necessarry. I can already hear the cries of "They should get jobs!" from you rightwingers, but think about it. The minimum wage for 16 and 17 year olds in this country is £3.00 an hour and we know that when you first enter a job you are unlikely to get a great deal more than that. So the choice for these kids is work 8 hours, make between about 25 and 40 quid or spend about 5 minutes robbing somebody and making over double that. Pretty understandable.

Now when it comes to this idea of fighting just for kicks I think the issue has to be split into two. First, why are those kids so bored? Second, why do they see violence as a way of alleviating it? Well, I dunno about anybody else in Britain but theres fuck all to do where I live. Everything costs money thats worth doing, and becomes more expensive yearly. In short, if you've got fuck all cash then you've got fuck all to do.
So why is violence their solution? Because it's free, it can actually be quite fun, it can bolster your reputation and because it's what all their favourite mediocre rappers do.

There, thats my take on why there is a bond between chaviness and violence.

Now, as for people calling these kids scum. Not all of them are bad people, believe it or not. I don't even think the majority are. I think that because there are so many chavs (it's blatantly the biggest youth culture in Britain today) that there are naturally more violent people within the group, so more people are likely to have had a nasty dealing with a chav or know someone who has. Think about it this way, even ignoring the violent nature of chav culture let's just have a little example.
Lets say theres a town with 500 chavs and 50 punks. And now lets say that 1 out of every 50 people in this town is violent (its a bit of a shit town). The non-aligned citizens are for more likely to see a chav acting violently than a punk. Therefor they come to associate all chavs with these traits. Thats basically whats happening now.

Also, you should just keep in mind that it's not always a choice to be a chav. If you grow up in a housing estate where everyone around you is a chav and you know that due to your shit education you're unlikely to leave the area ever, you're gonna want to be close to these people. This means picking up their style to avoid being seen as weird and an outsider. It's just a way of fitting in for them.

Going back to your example earlier, using black people, there is a difference.

Black people are born black without having a say in the matter. As it is a genetic thing rather than a choice, there is no set ideology for black people. Just because a black person is violent doesn't mean that all, or even many, black people are violent, and to assume so whould be idiotic.

You're right that social roles, like being a chav, aren't the same as genetic things, like being a black person.

However, its not quite as simple as saying that they choose it. Social roles are things we learn our entire lives, very rarely does someone sit down and make a willing effort to intigrate into a new social role. We're born in specific social situations, we learn the culture of those social situations as we grow, and they shape who we are and become. Things like economic status, education, geographical location, various demographics around you, etc. all effect what your social role will be, and you can only make a choice within these factors. A chav, for example, may not be able to make a choice to go to school, college, etc. (can't afford it) or better themselves in any way (lack of education), etc. So, in short, choices only go as far as our environment lets them.

Although you are correct in general, DHomme, that wide generalisations are often mistaken, in the case of chavs, there is no mistake that they are all scum. Every person who calls themselves a chav is either disrespectful to every non-chav they meet, violent, abusive, or all of the above. I have never met a chav who has been otherwise, and i have met many.

Although that is not to say that on their own, some chavs can be mildly acceptable, the simple mindset they share is so flawed that conversation is laced with fear on your part, and the desire to be rid of them.
