NationStates Jolt Archive

Ahh nostalgia. . .

Timon of Athens

I mostly left NS after Jolt, fully left after I couldn't seem to and an argument via TM with a religious zealot, and left IRC after I was without computer for a while.

I realized recently that NS has become quite huge, and decided that I'd come back for a week.

I'm curious how many old timers are left, so I'll start a nostalgia thread.

Admittedly, I came a few months after founders and moderators were instated, but nowadays I'd be considered ancient.

Since I'm only here until I go to Mexico I want to avoid any risk of getting sucked back in, so I'm not getting any old nations revived. The only people who remember me are old-timers, and if anyone I recognize posts here, I'll TM them there's no point in making myself feel obsolete by posting my name and getting "whos."

I graduate on Friday and go to college this fall, but I started playing when I was a freshman.

Anywhen. . .

I remember

When you could still find the occasional interesting thread on the general forum.
When a billion was a massive population.
When post whoring was tolerated.
When Normack had the most posts.
When Sirocco was just another generalite semi-spammer.
When nobody could figure out why Cognition had not yet been made a mod.
The first time Marathon was deleted (and the second)
The deletion of Philandrea and his debates with Marathon's ghost.
The first scramble for Mars.
When everybody thought that Franco's Spain would soon be gone.
When the Kandarin's RRA were a force to be reckoned with.
When Salusa Secondus was still the Tech Modling.
When the Rejected Realms were called "the Realms of Rejection" in Regional controls.
The first "You know you play NationStates too much when. . ." thread.
When you could read posts in the Technical forum going back to December of '02 (I recall being surprised that Anonymous had apparently disapeared from memory given his activity there)
When a trip by the NationStates Bunny led to the creation and explosion of Bunny and Dog Land.
The great split in Mercia.
The war over LUE (first major event covered in the Gameplay forum).
When Beaker, Satan, Scythia (and his later Spanish incarnations), and Eire Shamrock were around.
When The Global Market and Iuthania were my nemeses in the UN forum.
When the Palestinian Empire, North Eastern Europe, The Basenji, and a lot of others now gone were major posters.
When Enodia still kept the UN clean, and the resultant mess when he left.

I suppose that's enough for now.
A lot of things I remember may not have changed much (Are the NS and II RPer groups still at each others' throats?) so I won't post them yet.

Any other takers?

Edit: list fixed.

About as new as I was when Corinthe joined NS.

For a long time she was the only major player much newer than I.

Actually it was only 2-3 months, but it seemed like rather a lot.

When did you start posting frequently on the forum Kat?

Philandrea's deletion was the day after Marathon's second one, and both, I think were some time in late July or early August. I made quite an enemy of him in few weeks a recall.

I don't really recall seeing you much until a couple months before you modded, but your date says March '03, giving you seniority on my original nation by several months.

I know for a fact though that UP is also March '03 though, and she didn't start posting much until Franco's Spain came to power in the Pacific, I think sometime in the Fall of '03.

I joined the night of one of the apparently many attempts to overthrow Francos Spain-this one apparently launched due to a glich or loophole in the system. There where a few more attempts after that, but it seemed pretty evident at that point that he was invincible.

When Paratoga had the most posts, at one point accounting for 1% all by herself.

I remember. . .

Before Europe had a founder.
When nobody stayed permenately in Lazarus.
The excitement of the one year anniversary (I didn't get an acceptable version of my banner in until the day).
The NS Mod from Hell (And Cor's NS Player from Hell) threads.
When Neut and Slaggy, were major mods, and nobody knew who many of the current ones were were. Come to think of it, I think I was active before some of these mods were founded.
When Even April nations like Sirrocco's were considered relatively new.
When most people used their main nation as their UN nation.
When Ackbar and Nothingg were active on the forums.

Surely there must be others here who remember?
Aside from the mods I mean?

Are the NS and II RPer groups still at each others' throats?

Most of the time they just ignore each other, although there is occasional bitching about elitism by the IIers and snooty comments about IIers by NSers.

I think my original nation was a couple of months older than that, but not much. I was one of the few who got the Palestinian Empire's back in some of those flame wars. But the guy who came up with the most memorable flames as I recall was Annelida--he'd just get personal, telling you that you'd be a motherfucker if your dick was just a little bigger, that kind of stuff. Glad I never felt his wrath.

Pure Metal:
General has always alternated between laxness and strict enforcement. I stopped spamming and flaming there after I lost about 100 posts in the same purge that lost Normack thousands.

For me the golden age was the time before Marathon's deletion (I hated him, but that's beside the point), my own n00b days. Afterwards the mods got stricter and I matured, and had a lot more fun for a while, especially with the long awaited Gameplay forum and a few months thereafter, but I was also well known by that point and it didn't seem as big as it used to. Also SuperNintendo left and Sirocco gradually got absorbed with his modly duties and stopped speaking to me much, and so suddenly I was hanging out with a group of players of about my age and experience. Had more fun then, but I knew that I wouldn't be playing forever at that point.

And after Jolt the whole thing just felt decrepit.

For some people the golden age was that period before mods and founders. Wish I'd had a chance to have seen that.

How could I forget?

At one point I had puppets in about half the regions in NS, and MTGN was the only non-feeder/sink with any activity.

So I got involved in the counter-invasion of LUE. Or was it that the LUE invasion got me involved in MTGN.

Anywhen. . .

Yes, it was so nice when the UN proposals were sane.

...Well, comparatively.
I found them immensely frustrating at the time.

Timon of Athens

Alas, they were overly selective about what they archived at first.

I guess I should do some more mod related stuff. Most of the people I knew who weren't invaders/defenders either are/were mods or were considered for modship. Even some of those who were.

I remember . .

Myrth's mod squad
When AMF, Steel Butterfly, and Nanakland all took it for granted that they would be mods.
When there was a flood of mod wannabe postings around November '03.
The first and second mod olympics (where I finally noticed that Sal had been promoted)
When Hack admitted the existence of forum 7.
Myrth Day, in appreciation of all that Myrth did without any recognition before he was modded.
When Slaggy caused controversy by editing his own issues.
When Siro was made a GM and we finally had a steady supply of new issues.
When RepProd the Senior Game Mod was mad a game admin.

Hmm. . . I think I already did most of my mod-specific memories, and they're not as interesting, but oh well. More tommorrow if I need another bump on a different topic.

Still not many takers ehh?

Eeh, it's degraded that far? Glad I didn't stay to see it. If Cg couldn't prevent it, I probably couldn't have either.

I thought we managed to convince the mods to keep the RP out of that. But then I suppose TG was the only to regularly enforce it, and even when he wasn't busy it was a burden for him.

Any rate, I remember before there was a gameplay forum (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=296125).

You call the proposals in the queue at the time sane?
In retrospect, yes. I'd much rather go through six pages of proposals than 20 or [at this point I actually look up the current list] huh. . . it's only seven now? Guess somebody's doing a really good job of keeping it clean.

I used to be fairly quiet... started posting to the general and mod forums. And that, kids, is what happens when you try to be helpful, :D.
Hehe.
I was very helpful and never offered mod-dom. I had five or six stickies over my time on NS, at points three at a time.

I think I was too helpful and they dected a bit of mod wannabism.
Which there was, too, until half the people I knew became mods and I got a fair idea of the stress and time involved.

Say, you were modded same time as UP, right Kat?
I think she was much the same story, right?

But anywhen. . .

I am still an anti-nazi. As for Erasmus, I think you may be confusing him with "Eridanus", who used to use a pic of Ozzy Osbourne in his sig. He gave me the idea of using my pic in my sig, to the point of obnoxiousness.:D (I would still but jolt doesn't allow it:cool: ). I remember pissing off Demented Opression over my pic in my sig. Meh.

That's probably why then.

I couldn't figure out why I was associating you with him, aside from the anti-Nazi connection, but I think I remember your sig now.

That probably explains it. Not many people used portraits in their sigs, nor, I think do many now.

Yeah, it was Eridanus, I couldn't remember how it was spelled. Had a flag with a rising sun and motto "My karma just ran over your dogma" lived in MTGN for a while, sí? Kept using that sig when he was asked to stop by much of the forum, then when he was ordered to stop he used a really grotesque one of blown-open head, right? Odd I remember him vividly but couldn't spell his name.

I remember you a lot more clearly now, think I must have noticed your nation during Scythia's Spanish Inquisition of Hell. Or Sythia's last stand as it was.

Hehe, that was some of the last reall fun I had on NS.
I popped in and out posting with a non-native puppet driving him crazy until he promised not to evict me if I'd simply stay put. Kept his word too.

Hell gets invaded fairly regularly now. The apathy of the denizens usually drives them out after awhile.
