Starting Your Own Country...

The New Diabolicals

It must be everyone's dream to start your own country; make yourself King, write your own laws, create your own army and forge your own alliances with other nations. But...what's stopping us? Surely if you own your own land you should be able to start your own country. Are there any restrictions or laws banning this?

My NationState is actually in honour of this idea...
Back in highschool a couple friends of mine and I formed Gargantua, smallest country ever. It was composed of a space large enough to hold our three school desks. ;)
Of course... we didn't own the school property, so that wouldn't fly. :)

Three key things;

1) Land ownership needs to actually be yours.
2) You either need to work on your own land or be treated as an economic migrant.
3) Exportation of goods.

I think it would be better if people were allowed this freedom. But alas, even the most liberal government has a power-hungry streak that drives it to keep a hold on power. In my ideal situation citizens would have the constitutional right to form a 'substate'.

Surely if you own your own land you should be able to start your own country.

And therein lies the problem. I suppose you own your own land only at the permission, and under the laws of, the government of the country you live in.

ACTUALLY, two weeks ago I said "Screw the UK's laws about all property being the Queen's" and decided to start my own country, with me as King!

It was there to be done, so why not? Its now the Houses of me and a few friends. We've made a flag, a currentcy, a vague system of government and a constitution.
Currently we're making a National Anthem and trying to get as many citizens as possible. Right now we have 72.

So, all thats left to say is, wanna join?

*And yes, we called it Lofeta.*

Most liberal countries would say that if you gathered enough people in an area who all wanted to secceed then you could have it as a semi-autonomous region, which you controlled most of the time, but they would have control of if need be.

Wasn't there a show about this where a guy claimed a piece of land within England and claimed independence. I can't remember the name of it though. Anothe example could be Sealand which was established in 1968. A group of people turned an old British WW2 fort 6 miles off the coast into a Sealand. Has its own monarchy and currency and passports

Actually, this happened in the US not so long ago. Okay, so it was over twenty years ago, but whatever. It was called the Conch Republic. They still have their own passports. If I ever have $200 to spare, I'm gonna get one.

EDIT: And I realise that the documents aren't accepted as valid, but it would be fun to have.

It's 'cause you're from Ulster. He kinda wishes the rest of us would all follow suit, I think.

Yeah, it was (quite unimaginatively) called 'How To Start Your Own Country', and the country itself came to be known as Lovely. I technically hold joint British-Lovelian nationality, and the community is still going strong:

There was also a case in Washington, I think, where some religious cult tried to elect their leader mayor of a small town, and secede from the nation. They went as far as to send buses out to larger cities and bring homeless people back so they would vote their way. I forget the name of the town though, and I couldn't find it after a few minutes on google.

Do you have any idea how stupid that is. It would complete destroy the world economy, not to mention the other 100s of thing I could mention.

WRONG the constitution states that you have Lovely's citizenship only. No EU-compatible passport for you!

I would love to start my own country, but there are too many people who would fight for the same right. Then there would be nothing to stop the world from falling apart as we know it.

Though it doesn't need any help from us...

And if it did? What would be so bad? All the consumerist governments would crash down and there would be no Diet Coke? The world would be far greater if, like on NationStates, you could create your own region. That's the main thing that attracted me to NS in the first place.
