Do You Support Hugo Chávez?

Well... do ya?
I do, well at least his polices. Nationalizing major industries, democratic socialism, etc. And I love how he's always criticizing Bush. Ahh, good old Hugo.
For those who are not familiar with foreign leaders, or current events, Hugo Chávez is Venezuela's president.

Hugo Chavez is Satan, an incarnation of the Devil himself. He is a sworn enemy of God, Jesus, America and George W Bush, our noble leader. Just listen to his speeches, he is nowhere near as articulate and inspiring as our president. God Bless America!

I support him exactly the same amount that I support Bush. I don't live in either Venezuela or the USA.
(As it happens I do not support Lula, but that is a different issue.)

Perhaps we should start a betting pool on how many years it will be before Chavez succeeds in doing for Venezuela what Mugabe did for Zimbabwe.
Or should that betting pool be to see how long both creeps will take to make their nation a pesthole along the lines of North Korea? :(
I support him and most of his actions, yes. I do not believe he is God, or that he is perfect. There is a degree of incompetence in the way he is running his country's economy, and that is worrisome, but overall the changes he has made seem positive.

He is helping his country out. Ideologically, I could not be more far apart from the man. That doesn't mean I must hate his every action.
I believe in some of his ideas and I support his notion of an independent, truly nonaligned Latin America. However, I also have serious issues with his nationalization of industry and his pursuit of populism, both of which have led to serious economic hardship just as often as reckless, unrestrained capitalism. His civil and political rights issues also cannot be overlooked.
However, he's neither a savior nor a monster. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt for a while and see how things turn out...but right now, I don't really support him and I'm not really against him. It's mainly on an issue by issue basis that I disagree or agree with him.

My old Spanish teacher fled Venezuela after Hugo came to power. He still talks with his parents that live there, though. He can hear the clicks of the Venezuelan government listening in on his phone conversations. His parents both voted against Hugo, but they were registered as having voted for him. However, because they tried to vote against him, their government handouts have been taken away. Hugo seizes land from legitimate owners, without compensation, and drills all of the oil from it, spending the proceeds on AKs from Russia. He has told the people that the US is likely to invade any time now, and is trying to build a military larger than ours. Old friends of said spanish teacher seem to mysteriously disappear. The man is clearly a nut, and anybody who says they support his policies is just as crazy. Besides, as soon as Hugo runs out of oil, his government will topple.

From your link let us note these words...
"...conducted by the Venezuelan Institute for Data Analysis (IVAD)"
In other words it looks like some of Chavez's in-house PR flacks just plucked a few numbers that looked good from the air when they wrote their press release. Not exactly a good substitute for real elections, is it?
In any event, it's a matter of public record that totalitarian regimes like Stalin's and Mao's almost alway have suspiciously amazing high approval ratings. Given that the poll respondant could be killed for expressing disapproval this isn't exactly a surprise.
BTW, doesn't the fact this site links to sites with names like "New Left Review" and "Green Left" suggest that there might be a little bias within it? Most serious sites do make an effort to link to all sides of the spectrum. Does this site as a whole have any purpose in life other than to provide "happytalk" on behalf of Mr. Chavez? o_O

I see. Now, FAIR is biased, too, but they claim the same thing, and provide numerous polls to support it, from a variety of sources: see here. (http://www.commondreams.org/news2006/0502-09.htm)

If you're going to claim that Venezuela today is equivalent in this respect to China under Mao or the Soviet Union under Stalin, I don't think there's anything I can say that can convince you otherwise.

It's a propaganda site, but a useful one, and while their choice of articles is slanted, the content in the articles tends not to be (except for the opinion pieces, obviously.)
