Police are to place special bins at the airport to persuade supporters to leave any Nazi Second World War memorabilia behind.
I was going to try to turn this into a parody of the UK knife amnesty threads floating about at the moment. But quite frankly, I'm a little bit drunk, and couldn't think of a way to put it down.

Its not really an amnesty but more an aid to the german police. Seen as it is an offence in germany to have the nazi memorabilia, and loads of people are giong to germany for the world cup, it makes sence.

Happens to the best of us.
And now for my retort to this stupid concept of Nazi memorabilia amnesty. Seeing as all memorabilia has its roots in concepts and events of the past, removing such objects from the public is a crime in itself. It prevents the people from recieving a first-hand look at such artifacts of the past, good or bad.

Interesting?
If you were in the German army, is against the law if you still have your gear?
Hilarious. Germany goes and leaves litter all over Europe 60 odd years ago but if you bring any back into Germany now you'll be arrested because it is embarrassing to see.
Damn it, I'll have to leave my downed Messerschmitt Bf-109E4 at home...I don't think it'll fit in the bin.

I think I'm actually in line to eventually inherit a real swastika flag - doubtless with hilarious Father Tedesque consequences.

Either way, I see the entire idea behind this. Hooligans tend to be trouble makers. Sorry for that generalization.
Still, since people view them as such, it only makes sense that the police take some precautions that aren't really that awful.

No, just his clones...

I'm not going to inherit much WWII memorabilia due to the fact that my grandfather spent almost the entire war stationed in Bermuda...
I think I prefer the Russian attitude to their past regime:
"Screw it, we already have red stars on everything the army operates, lets just keep it."

Yeah, but when people think Nazi they think bad stuff. (I admit, they were quite organized and well-dressed).
When people think communism, Gulags and the KGB are the second thought. The first thought is comradeship and equality.
I'm off to bed.

Indeed. Even though it was comradery and equality in name only. In essence, it was anything but. I think the Nazi stuff looks cooler anyway. Some of it is reminiscent of Imperial Germany.

They should put up signs that say "Please help us erase history." I take memorabilia to mean original artifacts. If it's some douche skinhead who tatooed a swastika on his forearm because he's an asshat, he should have to cut his arm off, but if it is "memorabilia" in a historic sense, "Please help us erase history."

Then I'd rather have stuff from Imperial Germany. It has less the feeling of death, destruction and evil and more regality, order and power.
And well, I guess comradeship really changes from place to place, from time to time.

Ich auch. Given a choice between Soviet and Nazi stuff though, I think the Nazi stuff looks cooler.

Why bring it in the first place? What do you need swastikas for during a trip to Germany?

"Please help us erase history."
Not really. Anything confiscated will probably be donated to a museum or some such. Also, fans are being told ahead of time that WWII memoribilia will be confiscated, so they can't complain if they bring, and lose, their favorite SS uniform
Interesting?
If you were in the German army, is against the law if you still have your gear?Depends. There is a call for anyone that received an Iron Cross while in the Wehrmacht to get it replaced with a swastika-less one.

ok, this is a bad excuse to put this picture in, but I saw it earlier and thought it was quite a facinating contrast of two cultures...or something...
It's the British and German Police running joint patrols for hooligans at British ports:

History isn't being "erased"; anyone that's been to Germany and seen all the historical sites or various museums on the era would know that. This is an effort to keep a certain unpleasant part of history being glorified.

Talking of Nazi memorabilia, I know of someone (hardly a friend) who likes collecting Nazi medals. Among his prized possessions in his collection is a medal Hitler awarded to German mothers for producing aryan babies for the Third Reich's army.
Whatever floats one's boat....

First of all, its stupid people from other countries take nazi memorablia to Germany just to piss off the germans. Why can't they have a little honor and just make their trip? Their going there to see the country/watch football games or make enemies?
Second of all, i dont see why people should get rid of "nazi memorablia". Stuff like that should be in an historical museum, and germans should get over it. Youth germans nowadays have no fault for what happened years ago, they shouldnt feel offended. Not as much as i do for human beings killing others.
Historical items, good or bad, should be kept. Being on museums or even people's houses. People around the world should try hard and correct their mistakes, and use history to see human faults. Bad things happen today, bad things will happen tomorrow. You can't be ashamed for things you didnt do, correct yourself, and try to help others. Learn to live in a society and stop whinning about past events.

That's exactly what I say. The Germans should get the fuck over it. Even Ahmadinejad says that (for once, he's right).

I'm trying to find out what will happen. I think either it will go to a museum or the police will take and give a receipt so it can be collected was England get knocked out (:p).
I can't imagine that such artifacts will be destroyed.
