The Government will track everything you post

I was watching the CBS evening news and they reported that the Government of the US wants ISPs to store all the records of activity for every user for up to 2yrs. That means every keystroke and site visited is going to be looked over watched by the Government. They say its to stop kiddie porn and terrorism which Im completely for, but I think this is blurring the privacy line. Do you have a problem with is, or is it ok?

Yeah, the US government. I saw an article on it earlier today.

It's a fucking invasion of privacy. I can just imagine a journalist's private, legal, but embarrasing internet habits being used to blackmail him into silence by this or some future administration.

That means every keystroke and site visited is going to be looked over watched by the Government. Not the keystrokes; they don't leave your computer, unless someone installs a keylogger. But every bit of text sent.

Yes, though I didn't spot the bit about the government of the us bit. Seeing as I didn't(and couldn't) see the CBS evening news asking for another source is fair.

They already filter all the IP traffic on the US backbones. They just want it to be the responsibility of all the ISPs to collect the data that they do themselves.

That way, they can save money by not doing it themselves, and placing the economic burden on the ISPs.

If you don't believe they're recording everything, you're stupid. It's just a matter of what it takes to trip the software to dump your email and forum posts to an analyst's desk.

I once called up a friend of mine who works for the government and said a plethera of "key" words. "Key" word are those which attract attention from the echelon super computer that moniters phone calls.

Friend: Hello?
Me: Hi, nuclear device.
Friend: What?
Me: You know, Plutonium 239.
Friend: (Name Omited) you're not making any sense.
Me: Realy? Are you in a bad area? uranium enrichment.
Friend: This is my office phone, and you know it. Why did you call?
Me: No idea assassinate president.
Friend: I'm going to hang up.
Me: Allright, see you later. Airborne Ebola.

Time for the US government to learn the difference between data and information. They are going to have all the data they could possibly have needed to stop anything, but none of the information that they needed.

They will not be tracking your posts. They can't do that. All the ISP knows is what IP addresses you hit.

Why does everyone always make an exception for child porn?

Is it really worth it to you to live in a survalence state ala 1984 just to keep pedophiles from getting pictures to masturbate over?

It's not the viewing they're worried about; it's the creation of the pictures. At least, that's what people here think. The idea is that if you can keep blocking the sites, they won't be profitable and people will have one less reason to make them.

I don't think that's an accurate view. For one, I don't see exactly how the profitability does anything to encourage or discourage child abuse. I mean it's not like people who would ordinarily never consider raping children are getting into the buisiness just because there's money in it.

Further, if it were just about punishing and discouraging the manufacturers, you'd think that throwing the book at those on posession charges would be idiotic, considering the option of letting them off if they agree to help take down the supplier. Kind of like how the police try to operate with drug offenses.
