Monty Python vs. Seinfeld!

The Parkus Empire
02-06-2006, 19:01
Which is better, Monty Python, or Seinfeld?

My fencing teacer onced asked me what my favorite Monty Python skit was, and I answered "the Black Knight is immortal." Now that I think it over, the Swallow/Coconut scene may be my favorite.

As for my favorite Seinfeld episode, it would probably be "The Smelly Car." "Jerry this beyond B.O., this is B.B.O.!" :p

Anyway, I'll post a poll soon...it is probably up now, but if it's not, please be patient.

Monty Python ftw. Not even close. Not even the same ballpark. Not even the same fucking sport.

Cheese Shop. The 'Contradiction' sketch. Dead Parrot. Four Yorkshiremen. The Life of Brian...

So unbalanced it's not even funny. The nearest competition for Python would be Eddie Izzard - and even he admits he's largely influenced BY Python.

I was about to ask the same thing. Monty Python is not only not in the same ballpark with Seinfeld, it's not even in the same sport.

I've only fallen out of my chair laughing at something twice in my life. The first was the initial airing of Triumph's mockery of the Star Wars nerds. The second was the Monty Python skit where the alien blemanges turn everyone into Scotsmen in order to win Wimbledon. I just cracked up writing that. . .

I'm not a big fan of Seinfeld. I don't think it's the WORST product in the genre, but not EVERY show has something for me... getting in trouble for refusing kisses from other tenants, getting your ass kicked because you won't wear a ribbon... there IS some good stuff.

But, Monty is just way up there... there is gold in every show.

Something like that... I think there are certain ways brains perceive humour... and, if you follow a lot of the same tracks I do, it is likely because we find a lot of the same concepts funny.

For me - one of the greatest comedy moments, is in an episode of the Simpsons (Terror Lake?)... where Sideshow Bob is surrounded by concentric rings of rakes, which he keeps stepping on and muttering...

Monty Python and Seinfeld really can't be compared. More proper comparisons would be Seinfeld and The Simpsons, or Monty Python and Mad TV. Not necessarily because they are exactly similar, but because of the groups they appeal to. Monty Python and Seinfeld were two different generations, styles, and are hardly related other then the after effect of laughter.

Of the two, I prefer Monty Python, especially their cd's. "The Arguement Room" is classic. The Holy Grail, however has gotten beyond old, with everyone and their grandmothers quoting it.

No, the moose head was the one in which he had Polly and the Major holding money for him that he'd won betting on a horse (unless I'm getting senile, which isn't out of the question).
The moose head is in fact in the Germans episode. Sybil's off to hospital with an ingrowing toenail, leaving Basil in charge of the hotel. She tells him to put the moose head up on the wall. He leaves it on reception while he goes off to the kitchen for some reason - Manuel is behind the desk practising his English when the Major comes into reception.

"I speak English. I learn it from a boooooka!"

Basil comes back, hits Manuel (don't know if this is true, but it's entirely plausible), and is starting to put up the moose head when Sybil phones...asking him if he's put it up yet. Basil breaks one of the antlers, then when he thinks he's successfully put it up, it falls on his head knocking him out.

He wakes up in hospital, insults a nurse - "My God, you're ugly, aren't you?" - then escapes after a doctor tries to get him to sleep. Suffering from concussion (and wearing a bandage on his head) he's back at the hotel, and it's dinner time. He takes the Germans' order, all the while attempting to not mention the war. He fails.

"So that's one Goering salad..."

Much insulting later, as a result of which one of the German women is in fits of tears, he cries "Yes you did, you invaded Poland!", then does the goosestep march into reception and back.

The episode finishes with one of the German men saying "How did they ever win ze war?"

Arthur: The Lady of the Lake,... [Angel chorus begins singing in background] her arm clad in the purest shimmering samite, held aloft Excalibur from the bosom of the water signifying by Divine Providence that I, Arthur, was to carry Excalibur. [Angel chorus ends] That is why I am your king!

I feel like I'm going to be killed for saying I like Sienfeld better. But I grew up with it. It was always the show after the Simpsons every night. It's where I learned about birth control, the female orgasm, the evil that is George Steinberner, the amazing-ness that is Keith Hernandez... oh, the memories...

And I've met the real Soup Nazi.

Lol - I remember that. Montypython in immense although I think I prefer The Life of Brian to the Flying Circus.

Great scene:

[The audience has trouble hearing Jesus' sermon on the mount.]

Guy: I think it was, "Blessed are the cheesemakers."
Other Guy: Ahh, what's so special about cheesemakers?
Guy: Well, obviously this is not meant to be taken literally. It refers to any manufacturers of dairy products.

It's amazing that so many of you totally miss the comedy of Seinfeld.

It's not about the punch line. It's about the outright absurdity of the situations, and what some of the characters say from time to time (Kramer, mostly). You can watch a single episode of Seinfeld over and over again, and notice more subtle in-jokes and such with each viewing.

That's not to say it's superior to Python; of course, Python isn't superior to Seinfeld, either. One's a sitcom, and one's a comedy troupe that made a TV show, some films, some albums, some TV appearances, and a broadway play.

Now, comparing the Monty Python to The Kids In The Hall would be a sight... Of course, a sight only because most of you don't even know what the hell the latter is.

I don't feel this is a fair comparison. Both have their strengths, but as much as I love Seinfeld, Monty Python is the winner by far.

I loved it where everyone was walking around dressed as superman.
