Surburban Shootout

Well not really as only one shot was fired but early this morning 250 police officers raided 2 houses on Lansdowne Road, East London. The raid was carried out after inteligence gathered the men who lived there were plotting a terrorist attack on London. This wasn't any raid though. Some of the police were wearing chemical protection suits which means this was a very big threat. One of the men was shot but did not receive life threatening injuries and arrested at the hospital he was in. His brother was also arrested. So what does this mean for the UK? Is the threat still big in the UK after 7/7?

Not bad

The threat wasn't big on 7/7.

Is this because once it is action it is no longer merely threat?

With the IPCC Involved this investigation is going to take longer than first thought. If the guy who got shot in the sholder turns out to be a terrorist do you think he could still sue the state?

Bah!

Give me all the evidence! Sit me as a juror in the trial. I'd like to hear the evidence that lead to this raid.

And no, if he is a terrorist he can't sue the state. If he isn't... well I hope he gets a couple of billion.

I think most of the evidence will be tapes and chemicals. its like those other bombers who were planning to flatten a famous club in London.

No-his injury was caused by his own misadventure. Had he not been planning an attack he wouldn't have been shot ergo it is his own fault.

I'm truly amazed...

...I didn't think we had 250 police officers left.

Yes, the threat is that big. They will keep trying until they succeed, no matter how many of their followers are arrested or shot.

I don't think you would send 250 police officers into one house if Mi6 didn't have shit loads of evidence.

How many people did they think were in there? What did they think they were amred with? Can you actually fit 250 aremd polic officers in the average London home?(I live in London and our flat wouldn't fit nearly that many)

Heh, they could well be; they're certainly not out on the streets much. For any UK residents there's an excellent running joke in Private Eye you might like.

Dunno what they thought they were armed with. Had to be something serious otherwise they wouldn't have gone in with chemical protection suits. Well it was two houses knocked into one and not all entered some were guarding the perimeter to stop the suspects escaping.

Generally speaking we don't, the police don't carry guns routinely. We have specially trained police markmen who get called in when we need to shoot someone.

Sure you can...assume each person takes up 2 sq. ft. of floor space, you'd only need 4 rooms that are 12.5 feet by 10 feet to fit in 250 people.

LOl - you don't live in London do you?

I lived in Chelsea for three months this spring.

I was in a supposed high-end furnished apartment, complete with concierge service.

It was smaller than one of my children's bedrooms at home.

The "kitchen" (appliances in a closet) was completely unserviceable.

It was bug infested.

The staff could give a shit.

And that was 125 pounds per day.

and I bet having 250 armed police officers drop in unexpectedly for breakfast would have been a squash!

No, but I do know that the majority of houses have at least two storeys. I don't think it's entirely unreasonable for the floor area of one floor of a house to be an equivalent area to 25 by 20 feet...

of coures the majority of houses have two storeys but the majority of London houses are divided into flats.

Possibly. But the house in question here was two terraced houses that had the wall between them knocked through. It could have comfortably accommodated 250 police officers, maybe even allowing some of them to sit down.

Without even exploring the news, I am willing to bet that the suspects are from a certain south Asian country.

some knocking the door and windows in, some rushing in with guns, some around the back to prevent escape, some around the front to prevent escape, possibly some in cars to prevent escape, some to collect evidence, some to seal of the scene. could add up to 250 very easily
