Favorite Starcraft Race??

It's such a great game it's televised in South Korea...

Certainly there must be MANY people here who have played this amazingly entertaining game, so tell us...what is your favorite race to play as?

Also, you could obviously branch this off into any number of conversations, from describing the best way to infest a command center, to telling us all about the time you got royally bitchslapped by a Protoss carrier fleet. :p

Well, I always used to play as the protoss, because i used to think the Zealots looks awesome; and they still do, but that was years ago...nowdays I play as Terrans, because I LOVE seige tanks....It's that satisfying sound of the cannons, that low "Thump!", and an even bigger satisfaction of whatching those Zerg pop open like ripe fruit! :mp5:

I had a girlfriend some years back (8 years maybe?), and her dad built a computer network in the basement. There were 4 of us that would play (she had a 4 year old brother that actually did okay at SC), and we would be at it for hours, sometimes until 2 or 3 in the morning. :P Her little brother loved zealots, and her dad would do a funny zealot immitation. I still play that damn game. It is so versatile and addicitive it's hard not to.

I think my favorite was protoss in regular SC. In the expansion, I think terran are my favorite. The medics DO indeed make a difference in attack power.

Zerg win hands down, mass the mutalisks and you lose. LOSE. Aside from just being the totally awesome evil bug-alien thingies, they were probably so underrated that most people never tried playing them. The majority of players went protoss to mass carriers... (Not really a good strategy unless you can get them fast). You can mass mutalisks so fast, and they hit more than one unit. GG.

Protoss.

A combination of Scouts, Carriers, Observers, and Corsairs in the expansion is unbeatable. Period.

Without the expansion, its a little tougher without Corsairs, but it's still a viable attack force.

Protoss really are my least favorite though...too damn expensive.

Terrans are my favorites. Just keep building bunkers steadily deeper into enemy territory, supporting with siege-tanks, cloaked wraiths, sensor scans and the occasional Ghost for lock-down or the almighty nuke.

Relatively cheap, and damn effective. :D

Terrans, because nothing sucks more for your opponents in a LAN game more than thinking you're dead from that last assault, when in actuality you just picked up your motorhomes and moved to a safer trailer park. Also, Yamato Guns in a squad of 12 Battlecruisers = superiority.

I don't have a favorite Starcraft race, mainly because after a grand total of five minutes of playtime, the game bored the living shit out of me.

Zerg are teh 0wnzors!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seriously, thy're so under-rated and all of their units are so in-expensive, By the time a protoss player has enough carriers to really do anything, I can have so many Scourge anti-air units it'll make your eyes bleed, and after I've expended all of those against your expensive carriers, I still have the resources to mass Guardians which outrange defense turrets.

And thats without even zerg rushing which is a practically unbeatable strategy (If chumpy and one I would never stoop to unless an opponent had personally angered me)

Although, something does have to be said for the Terrans. Funny phrases(You might know that they say pretty funny things most of the time, but did you know, if you click on them a few times in a row, they start getting angry at you?) and the ability tojust move the base in an emergency are definately good points for the terrs. But the zerg still get my vote

TBH I used to do that on Yuri's Revenge as well...just get soviet and ally CPU players on your side, then use Yuri prime to take over their con-yards...mmm....

And, I still think the Terrans kick ass...cos they have BATTLECRUISERS...the almighty (if slow) dominators of the battlefield...

bah, battlecruisers only take two or three scourge's to kill, the Protoss carriers takes three to four and alsocomes with built in decoysthat make them harder to take out.

Though, when you have two hundred Scourges in the air, the numbers sort of even out.

You just can't get air dominance agaisnt the Zerg.

Everyone always looks at me crazy when I start to mass scouts... but scouts, plus a few carriers(6-12 only), an arbiter, and a few observers... nearly impossible to kill(I've never seen a zerg player mass, or even have a decent number of scourges. They never want to spend the gas to pre-empt air assets, and never have enough time to get enough to attack with once I make my large assault).

My favorite StarCraft race in general is the Protoss, largely due to backstory and semi-elder race status.

My favorite StarCraft race to play has varied, though - Zerg are good at taking expansions and swarming the opponent, Terrans generally have longer-ranged units, and I have a better grasp of which Protoss units and buildings to warp in during the late game.

When I was last playing StarCraft, I was using the Protoss - specifically, a Zealot/Dragoon/Dark Templar/Carrier/Arbiter/Observer combo (with High Templar, Dark Archons, Corsairs, and Scouts as needed), which worked well against the nubby AI Terrans - the Zealots and Dark Templar rip through Siege Tanks, Dragoons and Zealots hold off Terran infantry, and the Dark Templar and Carriers wipe out the Terran bases (the AI rarely manages to get Battlecruisers, and when it does use Battlecruisers I reply with Mind Control). My usage of High Templar, (regular) Archons, and Reavers increases significantly against Zerg opponents, as these three units just seem to work better against Zerg (as Zerg don't have Siege Tanks).

Of course, I've been largely preoccupied with driving lessons and DotA:Allstars lately, so I haven't tested my 'Toss in a while.

Gotta love terran. The most fun in the whole world is taking a good 100 or so Marines and 50 firebats and swarming a Zerg base, or one ghost with ten nuke silos :sniper: . The blood flows... Or even better, using dropships to unload 20 goliaths and 5 tanks in the middle of another terran base, the bunkers just crack right open. An man, Valkyries en masse will kill any flying thing in seconds, those carriers are dead meat against 20 or so Vals. Tho I agree with the guy who reckond Protoss win for coolness factor. I've always liked Terran, mainly for siege tanks. Not only at they amazing for defense with some bunkers and Missle Turrents but they kick ass in blowing up buildings. Siege Tanks + Goliaths + Vultures (not many people I played with realized how effective they are) = pwnage if you play it right. My favorites were siege from outside of a town and slowly destroying it by doing a Tank Push or getting drop ships and dropping right at their mineral spot. I always set my defense up in a triangle at the place where they get into your base. Set up three bunkers with a siege tank for each along with Turrents and a few expendable Marine/Firebats/Medics and rarely someone gets into your base. I started playing that game in 1998 (first computer game I bought) and I still play it today. Although I've fallen outta my prime :(

And about being royally bitchslapped by Protoss carriers...my friend loved protoss and some of our longer 1v1 ended in me getinng annihilated by carriers. Trick is to target the carrier tho and not the intercepters ;)

My best using race is the zerg however. For terran players,I usually mass the hydras but for protoss it takes a good mix of scourge to take out there air force and then mass mutalisk and guardians.

Do you guys think there going to make a starcraft 2?
I mean they leave it open ended with raynor promising to kill Kearigan and most of the charecters(Artanis,Raynor, and Zeruteul) live. There is also a secret level that I don't know if any of you played but it involves Durant mixing Protoss and zerg DNA.At the end of the end of the level Durant says that this is the new super race and that nothing will be able to stop it.

You can't base a game off of how it does in South Korea. South Korea is fucking insane over video games. Actually, most highly modernized asian cultures are. I mean, literally - they go nuts. Companies had to alternate their work schedule for the release of the new Dragon Quest game, because so many people were taking work off that day.

In USA online cafes are casual and risky business to get into because you can't guarantee a lot of business - in South Korea it's a booming, nay, required and needed resource of their culture.

Honestly. It's crazy.

I tend to enjoy the Protoss the most, because you have to be tactical with them. Massing a single unit is hideously expensive and just ensures that you will fail. My favorite strategy with them is to be a bastard and Arbiter in a legion of dark templar troops in the back of an enemy base. You should see how quick 49 dmg a hit per unit can cut through anything the enemy has that foolishly leaves detectors out of its base. Then, if any units try to fly in, you have that same Arbiter freeze them, and send in 2 squads of Scouts. If I don't kill you, I kill everything but your front defenses and that is fine by me.

That said, I don't really have a favorite race so much as strategy. For Terran, I love massing lots of mech Goliaths upgraded, and throwing them at anyone and anything. If you have an open area, the enemy is owned. If it is crowded why hell...a few nukes can clear up things :D.

For Zerg, its about the hydralisk drop in the back of the enemy base, or else the muta/Guardian combo. Not many things can stand 8 force groups of hydras right in the midst of the drones/probes/SCVs. If air comes, scourge knocks it down.

I never really understood that. The Zerg wanted to absorb the Terrans to take advantage of their latent psychic potential. Then Duran says he is merging Zerg and Protoss DNA, since both are Xel'Naga creations. Yet, if you read the guide and such, there are hints that humanity was tweaked by the Xel'Naga as well and hence are at least as powerful as the two other races. Why not a Protoss-Terran hybrid? Why are Terran-Zerg groups so hideously weak compared to say, Kerrigan? Why do the Zerg never absorb a Protoss warrior they might capture or defeat on the battlefield?

In short: Duran is full of shit.

We all know that terran are the best. They aren't as expensive as the protoss, and aren't as cheap as the zerg. Rushing wraiths and having some science vessels is unstoppable. The wraiths are cheap, durable, tough, and expendable. They cloak so you can hit the enemy hard before they realize what's happening, when they do come to their senses, you can either (using science vessels while covored by the wraiths):
A. Hit them with EMP if they are protoss and take out half their health
B. Use irridate and kill zerg by the bunch (and marines, etc)
C. Irridate works GREAT on zerg and terran workers.

Protoss and zerg just can't do this, with the shielded protoss and the organic zerg, the science vessels can cripple whatever is thrown at you while your wraiths lay the smack down

The wraith and science vessel combo is simply the most versitile. You can take on whoever you want, and always win. And hey, if for some reason all your wraiths get blown to pieces, you can make a whole new fleet in just a few minutes, and if you're being attacked while you're rebuilding, you can fly your starports away, and make more wraiths!! Unstoppable I say! Unstoppable!

As a Protoss player... you will be saying hello to my Dark Templar before you get a Factory. I also <3 Terran and their lack of early detection.

Or, I could be lucky and evil, and warp an Assimilator on top of your Vespene geyser... and you'll see lots of Zealots, Dragoons, and/or Dark Templar by the time you actually get the Vespene to build that Factory of yours (and you'll also have to waste resources sending SCV's or Marines to clear my Assimilator off your Vespene). I <3 the Protoss ability to warp in buildings rather than constructing them.

I can beat any race as zerg without Ling rushes.

You just can't be the combination of Scourge and Guardians. With scourge to keep your air units away (uBeR carrier masses of d00m, meet my cloud of kamikaze scourge.) the guardians can clean up against anything on the ground.

and if you try to rush, you better be pepared for cleaning out dozens of bases, each with enough defenses to keep you occupied for a while.

Fun Fact: Any air unit can be defeated by four Scourges, most only take two, and many take only one. SInce each scourge only cost 1/2 command point, you can build 200 of them and still have 100 command points left over for whatever else you want:D
Delator
06-06-2006, 07:41
I'm noticing a lot of Terran fans seem to like Goliaths, but in my opinion they're the worst Terran unit.

They're anti-air is nice when upgraded, but their AI is REALLY stupid...you constantly have to babysit them or they split off and do their own thing (which is usually get killed by a dozen Zerglings), or just get stuck somewhere.

That, and their anti-ground attack is WAY too weak. Add their expense, and they just aren't worth it except perhaps as backup for your missile turrets.

That's the whole issue with Starcraft. It's an old game, so the AI will suffer for it. It's part of why I want a Starcraft II: the AI will be so massively improved it'll be amazing.

Their attack is weak yes, but can be respectable. The 15 dmg is not bad, and since it isn't halved or quartered like many attacks (hydra included) The reason I like them is that they are versatile. I *do* babysit them, in that I will build 5 or six factories at a time and crank out 8 force groups of them, and send them in to attack. Keep a squad or two back to hold off an air assault, and a few in the building queue on hold in case of a sudden attack.

In the original, the Zerg.

Yay Hydra.

As for Brood war, I'm all Protoss. I tend to work wonders with Dark Templars and Scouts.

True, but none of the other units in Starcraft require anywhere near as much effort to keep organized and on task...except possibly Corsairs.

I dunno...Goliaths are awfully pricey to throw at the enemy en-masse like that, especially considering that Zerglings or Zealots eat Goliaths for breakfast.
