I understand the 'WTF' part, but I often see, "WTF, over?" on this forum. What is the point of the 'over' bit? Does it mean anything extra?
Amestria

It’s just an expression used to convey shock, disapproval, or whatever.

No more questions.

The 'over' part is fairly stupid: it's like a radio conversation, where you say 'over' after each message. If I remember right, there was a movie where the guy says "what the fuck, over" into his radio. War film? Not sure.

Dont listen to these people. It actually stands for Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, the call sign of an little known all-female fighter squad from WWII. So saying the abbreviation WTF is used to imply that someone is rather girly, or too feminine or question their sexuality. The 'Over' comes from the radio conversations in WWII.

The 'over' is usually used by Eutrusca in his threads. He's a military veteran, so I guess that's the reason.

Someone has to tell the truth around here.

Anyway, when Eut does his 'over'-bit,
he is just pointing out that someone just bowled 6 balls.

It's really Where's The Fries. It means the poster is hungry, when they add "Over" they are suggesting that you might have them.

Now I know that the indefinate article isn't usually used in acronym, but that's how hungry they are...

I thought it meant Weigh The Frankfurters. Like when you go to the butcher and you're going to do some grilling and you don't want to spend money on real meat. ;)

I was due.

It means "What's The Frequency," they are telling you they are R.E.M. fans. But when they add "Over" it means they are over it now.

It means Waterfalls Take Forever. It's an obscure reference to Hannibal's original plan of simply climbing to the top and then creating a waterfall to slide down onto the Romans with. The plan was dismissed because, as a soldier pointed out, Waterfalls Take Forever to make. And then to go "Over." it was too much. It's used today to mark an idea as too elaborate.

Incidently, while the idea wasn't used it is credited with creating what we know today as "Waterparks."

Its old naval terminology. Wants To Fathom. If the captain needed to know the depth he'd bellow out "WTF!". If the depth wasnt what he expected and he needed another measurement he would shout out "WTF Over!"

As for WTF Over, there is a simple explanation.

WTF stands for Wilderness Terain Fortification, in the days of the colonial armies, which was used to represent a natural trap, or outpost, such as a gated river, or fortified ditch. Over was used to reffer to the relative topographical position of the said fortification according to sea level.

It means Water The Ferns. In an early study of internet users it was found that people who became 'adicted' to forums and chat rooms often neglected menial tasks about the house, leading to the highest house plant fatality rate ever counted (of the two time such a statistic was taken, the first being after the multi-faceted "Take Care of Your Fern Campaign, which included MovieTone reels of Veronica Lake showing the techniques of proper watering).

WTF, or Water The Ferns, then became a way to tell someone that they have been on the internet too long and need to 'Water The Ferns,' "over" of course refering to the distracted way early net-dicts went about the tasks that they did do, often having to do them "over."
