Do you have faith in Cod?

The stocks are going fast; if we continue to overfish, then we risk losing the population forever; if we stop the fishing, then we will put hundreds of fishermen out of business.

I don't think I've ever eaten Cod. If they are worried that there is a possibility of over fishing, or fishing them out.. then either raise the prices of the fish.. or cut back on the fishing. That's about all you can do .. ?

Stop (some of) the fishing. If the fish disappear all those fishermen are going to be out of business anyway.

Yeah I need to eat more fish. I like fish, if it's cooked right. No problem.. I just rarely eat it. Best fish I've ever eaten was Mahi Mahi .. grilled at a friends house.. good gosh that was a great peice of fish! Was fresh too.

When has such long term thinking ever affected the 'now now now' mentality?
It's the same thing the unions do. Demand more money now, or stop 10 people going redundant now, only for the whole business to go under as a result and everyone lose out.

I'm certain I wouldn't like caviar. The texture alone would turn me off. Seems like it would feel like little slick balls in your mouth.

The only sea food I've ever turned down was octopus. There was something about all the legs and its little black eyes staring at me that put me off. I had pizza instead. :p

God is Cod!
- The Sacred Equivalence, from "The Va Dinci Cod", the best "Da Vinci Code" parody ever. Brilliant parody, makes fun of Dan Brown very effectively. Anyway... actually, no, I don't have faith in cod, but in Jesus.

I believe the humans and the fish can coexist.. Eh..
Seriously though, I'm tempted to say "who gives a shit?" If we melt our perma-ice, the saline levels in the oceans will drop enough to kill the scaly ones, and we seem pretty intent on doing just that.

Perhaps it would be better to follow the agricultural formula, you know, letting some areas "lie fallow" for periods of time, to allow the fish to re-grow their numbers while the fishermen harvest elsewhere.
Oh and I'd like to disagree partly with the union comment.
That is what a badly handled/led union does (though yes, that happens, can't deny that).
However, in just as many cases it's the union that has to argue for the long term thinking and stop the company to cash in short term gains that comes bite and back them on the ass in the long term.
Not to mention what it does to the workers.

Stop the fishing for at least 10 years, the fisherman can find other fish, or get other jobs.
For a human to stop one trade and re-train in another is sooooooo increadably simple. We are made not to specialise but so that we can do anything that we put our minds to. Any fisherman that cannot retrain is basicaly to lazy.

Yes, but where does he/she get the money to pay the bills for the house, the boat and so on? Plus the expenses for the re-education in itself.

Shit man, have you ever been poor? My guess is yes, as I am guessing have most of us here. I have been poor and had to change my job to earn more money all throughout my life. Nobody said living was easy. But the truth is nobody owes anybody a life, it is up to all of us individualy to make the best life that we can.
I don't know where these out of work fishermen will find extra money, but if I can do it and live, and you can do it and live and millions of people all over the world can do it, then it's not that great a hardship is it?
They either find ways to make cash or they do not, it isn't up to me, but them. I'm more intrested in the long term picture of the planet for all of our survival than a few hundred fisherman haveing a hard life.
