I admit that I don't know all the races, not even all the famous ones, but I'd like to hear your opinion.
Is it Paris-Dakar? LeMans? The Monte Carlo rally? The finals of the F1/Indy 500/Nascar seasons?

Personally, I vote for LeMans. :)

And the best car-chase scene is in Bullit. ;)

Indy 500 isn't a season, it's a race, and it was last weekend. There is the Indy Racing League, but the 500 starts that season, it doesn't end it.

But for me, it's Le Mans as well. It's my favorite. I won't say 'best' because I don't want to get dragged into anything, but that's my fav.

And yes, 45 minutes into the movie Bullitt rules.

Hmm, it seems my ignorance was greater than I had assumed. Thank you for informing me.
And for adding the 't' I lost somewhere when I wrote the title of that excellent movie. ;)
The chase in Blues Brothers is really good too.

And, what with the people thing? Since when does people have four wheels and run on gasoline (or whatever conoctions they put in the cars these days ;))?

Now now, people can race on foot (http://www.itvs.org/footrace/).

That (the link) looks totally kick ass. I love shit like that.

And for willfull destruction, I'd have to go with the last 45 minutes (don't know what it is about 45...) of the original Gone in 60 Seconds...

Funny, cause Le Mans isn't a race but a series. As for the greatest race, the Paris-Dakar Rally. No other race can really offer such variety in the terrain, vehicles and teams themselves actually. While the Le Mans series, Formula 1, etc... all are run by teams pumping millions of dollars into each season, the Dakar has everything from the high end teams to guys who built their trucks or bikes using what ever they had in the wallets really. It is a true race in which nearly all can compete.

No, Le Mans is a race. The 24 Hours of Le Mans (http://www.lemans.org/24heuresdumans/live/pages/accueil_gb.html), been around for years and years.

Now there are two series recently attached to it-European Le Mans Series and the American Le Mans Series, and things like the FIA-GT series in the past, Le Mans itself is still a race. Comin' up soon, too.

You have a good point about the Paris-Dakar rally, but there is just a special feel about the 24 hour LeMans race that makes it my favourite.
And the running start is just damn cool. ;)

Paris-Dakar... anything involving both buggys, landrovers, huge trucks and motorcykles on a crazy race through the desert is bound to be great... other than that I don't fancy motorsports much...

They haven't done that since 1969. But it was cool, if terribly dangerous...

There are privateer teams in Le Mans, a Lamborghini owners club is entering a car in GT1 this year, and the GT2 winners a few years ago (and I think last year, but I can't remember) was a small group from up in Sonoma, California using a 911. There are a lot of 'garage shop' entries that have just as little chance to do the overall win as privateers in Paris-Dakar.

Make no mistake, I got plenty of love for Paris-Dakar, I just like sports cars a lot.

Paris-Dakar offers more terrain but the Baja 1000 is probably more economically accessible to more would-be racers. Entry fee is 50 bucks for cars/trucks, 25bucks for bikes and quads

It might be better to ask this as a top 5 or top 10 question, because the title of best race is so subjective. If your question was phrased in such a way, my response would be:

Top 5 (in no particular order)

Daytona 500 (Nascar Nextel Cup)
Indy 500 (IRL)
Baja 1000 (SCORE)
Rolex 24 at Daytona (IMSA, I think)
Dakar Rally

I'm trying to push my dad to run his Miata in the Targa Newfoundland (http://www.targanewfoundland.com/) (Canadian version of the Targa Tasmania).

I'd also like to give the La Carrera Panamericana (http://www.lacarrerapanamericana.com.mx/index2.htm) a go.

IMSA evolved itself into ALMS. 25 hours of Daytona is now the Grand Am series. I believe it did used to be an IMSA event, though.
