I have a confession to make

Typically I am intimidated by black and hispanic people. If I see a black or hispanic person walking down the street toward me, I am likely to be more on my guard than I would be if it was a white or asian person. Intellectually, I know this is wrong, but it is still something I have very little control over feeling. Does this make me a rascist?

Where I live, there are very few black and hispanic people, which is one of the reasons I think I'm intimidated by them--simple lack of exposure. For the same reason, I have no negative feeling toward asian ethnicities, since I'm around them all the time (There are like ten asian kids in my graduating class.)
There are likely other factors, such as the media's portrayel of black and hispanic people as agressive, often criminal, individuals, and the fact that of the few black and hispanic people I've met, most have come off as a bit agressive (though that may have just been my prejudice coloring the situation.)
Thoughts?

I'd like to, but there are two problems with that. First off, I don't really know any black people. (We're really isolated) and given that, it's hard to start a friendship on the foot of "Hey, I'm trying to get rid of my irrational prejudice toward your rascial group. Wanna hand out so I can get more used to you?"
That might get me some wierd looks.

Well, on the bright side it's not racism in my opinion. It's prejudice. We've all got some prejudices that we hang on to. Anyway, it's not hard for me to hang out with black folks because I live in a mostly black city. In a place with few black people I can imagine it would be hard to get to know alot of black people.

are you old enough to drink?

If so, spend some time in a (if there are such establishments where you live) heavily African-American and/or Latinoamericano bar/pub/club.

No, I'm not old enough to drink, nor am I the type to hang out in bars. The bar crowd's not really my type of people anyway.

Blacks and Latinos are really not that scary (then again, I've been around them half my life). They just take a little getting used to. If they act aggressive, remember that they have suffered four hundred years of racial oppression.
It's worth meeting people of other colors, because Latinas are damn sexy. ;)

Er... nice reasoning.

Actually, I don't have anything to say about that without being a hypocrite. Anyway, there's no point in feeling guilty about it, but do try to expose yourself more to other racial groups. Perhaps if/when you go to college (if you're not there already...) look for a place with more racial diversity than wherever you currently are.

If for whatever reason that doesn't work out, try hanging around in bars when you're old enough. At the very least, it's a fun way to meet new people of whatever racial group. And drinking is fun.

Yeah, I dont think your racist just need to hang out with more blacks or latinos. In my town is mostly latinos, not black the other way around, and they all cool people and come in all color flavors lol.

No, I don't think you're racist. But the others are right. Just get to know some blacks or hispanics.

Hispanic and caucasian are not mutually exclusive: for example Martin Sheen is hispanic. How do you tell the difference between hispanics and whites?

Yeah, just stay away from those 500 or 600 year old latinos - they can be cranky :p

(Is that a reverse prejudice "you owe me?"-attitude showing?)

With one of those paint-shade cards from home depot.;)
In all seriousness, accidental prejudice isn't an exact science, but I think the more hispanic or black a person looks, the stronger the reaction is. Especially if they meet other racial steriotypes by appearance, like a black guy doing the "gangsta walk" or a hispanic guy slouching a lot.

I'm Latin We're not evil
I wasn't accusing you of being evil. I was more worried about myself being evil, honestly.

your sheltered life has lead to this: fear of the unknown and that. just want to watch out that it doesn't prejudice any decisions you might need to make
