Simcity 1 was pretty good for its time.
SC 2 was amazing.
SC 3 was utter crap.
SC 4 was pretty decent.

Most of the other Sims were mediocre at best, with the exception of Sim Ant, which has to be one of the wierdest, yet most fun, strategy games ever.
The Sims were, to be blunt, a money grab. It was a decent game, but the, what, 12 addons selling for $20 each? Please.
I cant wait for Spore though (which is an honourary Sim game), 'tis going to pwn :)

graphics sure as hell made an improvement.

i really need to get up to date on games

(most recent PC game bought was Civ I, SC2K, AOEII, and Rainbow Six [the first] that was years ago)

but i enjoy all of them too much to get anything new, because all sequels are anymore is the same game re-hashed with pretty colors and graphics, but not much else.

2K, as much fun as it was, is nothing compared to SC4. SC4 is much more involved, and the rush hour expansion adds alot more to the gameplay.

I lost my Simcity data awhile back, and even my best city, Klitville (notice something about the name?) which had a population of like 2 million, and had an enormous treasury of several million simoleones.

Lots of people have trouble getting out of debt. the trick is not to zone huge areas of land at a time, and wait for them to fill up, but to start very small, so you did not spend alot of money, and quickly build lots of little tiny zones, like 8x8, on all sides of your core city. you will very quickly get out of debt, and though you will not have lots of room to grow, and will be constantly expanding that way, but you will have money! Another trick is if you start getting tons of slummy areas, to demolish blocks of land, pause the game, and build a ring roads around the perimeter. the area will quickly begin to revive once you unpause.

Oh, and does anyone ever get in the habit of making their very first building historical, and their first skyscraper?

yeah, i loved that game :) one of my first... ah, memories...
the 3000 sequel was my favourite though as it had better graphics, much more detail and improvements, and you could build pretty massive cities really quite quickly... plus, it retained the fun, charm and sense of humour that the original two had :)
sadly all that was lost in 4k :( (and the cities you could build were tiny and crap... yes i know there was the neighbourhood thing but it was just crap imho)

I love Chicago. You even made LSD (Lake Shore Drive.) To make it accurate, you need one highrise on the east side of LSD. That building is the only one on the east side because the man who owns the property paid off Richard J. Daley to get the building permit. (best gov money can buy)

Yeah, the region map is based on Chicago. I like the way the rivers make a tiny peninsula. Any accuracies are coincidental except the John Hancock Center. I would have used el rails but people dont like the noise they make.

I tried using New York City but it was too friggin huge.

speaking of abandoned houses, what is the best way for them not to be abandoned? i tried everything but still people move out, is there something i've done wrong? or is that just the way the game is? (in SC2K of course)

Hehehe, I remember that one...keep an eye out for the old Sim City (Classic) DOS cheat "fund"...25% interest rate for a bond. Needless to say, don't take the deal.

I had the old Windows 95 version with SCURK and the scenario pack added in...it even had the Will TV interviews, a kind of old-school streaming video.

I think if you fund twice, pay it off, and then fund again, youll get a negative interest rate and make like 65,000 a year.

On the DOS version of Sim City 2000, yeah...it's awesome. However, on the Windows version and I think the Mac version you either just get the bonds or even worse a bug that results in losses of millions of dollars each year.

Sim City 3000 was probably my favorite, since it seemed to be the best balance between complexity and gameplay...plus, I liked the building styles.

I think I like SimCity 4 with the Rush Hour expansion. It really opened things up. Also the ground design, regional gameplay, and amazing graphics were awesome. But it didn't have the newspaper. ;_;

One of my friends found something that, though not exactly a cheat, was very unfair. he would lower taxes to as low as they would go in January, so there would be a population explosion, then, On the first day of December, he would boost the taxes to maximum, and make a heap of cash at years end. before the people could leave, he would lower the taxes so that they would stay. He never did find out how to get money the normal way

I don't know if I ever played SC2k... I played the original SC, which I loved to death. The next I remember hearing about the Sims was some ridiculous piece of crap where you built skyrises.
"Oh, Sim City! How far thou hast fallen!"
And I abandoned the Sims ever since.
I watched my sister playing "The Sims" once... and it looked kinda stupid.

The could have done MUCH better for SC4. So WE had to. SC4 is crap without Rush Hour and custom content (http://simtropolis.com). You want some REAL SC gaming, you absolutely HAVE to download (http://www.simtropolis.com/modding/index.cfm?p=details&id=380) the Network Addon Modd.

What id like to see in the next sim city are

1) Residential/Commercial combo plots. Like how apartments or high rises have stores and shit on the ground level.

2) THE ABILITY TO BUILD DIAGONALLY AND ON ALL ANGLES.

3) El rails over roads that actually work. I currently surround an el rail with 2 one ways which is okay, except one ways cant connect to neighboring cities, which is another thing I'd like to see changed. In addition, the ability to build el rail/monorail stations on a diagonal, but this is a corollary to #2.
Greyenivol Colony
31-05-2006, 15:45
I never got into the Sim Citiy games, the cities you can make are too based on right angles. That's not what a real city looks like, I want to play with a real city. As strange a qualm as this seems, I think the game would be a lot better if you could build round roads instead of having to rigidly stick to a grid. Also it'd be good if there was some kind of random architecture generator, instead of there being the same few buildings over and over again. Again, the games need more realism.

And yes, Spore looks awexome.

31-05-2006, 16:22
I played the original, black-and-white, flat-as-new-sheet-metal SimCity on a Macintosh Classic. The game was addictive, but also very frustrating (I'm kind of a masochist that way). I read and re-read the manual and did everything I could to follow the rules, and I never got large or profitable cities. Much later, I discovered that my desire to keep all the potentially polluting/inconvenient things away from the city core meant a shitload of infrastructure. I'd have the power plants, pumping stations, waste treatment, and airport way the hell over-scrolled in the far-off distance, not realizing that the power lines, sewers and roads were costing me beaucoup.

Something I didn't like was the automatic disruption of services whenever you tore a block down. Completely unrealistic, especially when you had laid down the utilities before putting up the building! It was as if the demolition crews just waltzed in with C4 and primer cord and blew the shit out of the whole block, power lines and all. Dumb.

I may try SC4, but I'm waiting for Civ4 to be 'ported to Mac OSX.

I actually like the game design … everything in its own spawned windows with borders … it actually works really nice on my dual monitor (I will take a screen shot later)

But I can leave population graphs and such all open on the second monitor and sense it is in a window and runs at the native resolution it does not freak with things when switching to another program (and you can do it with the mouse rather then just the keyboard)

By the way, I remember a nice "feature" (bug) that allows you to make "swamps". I don't remember exactly how it works (it's been a few years), but it involves placing lakes and adjusting the water level, and then holding down a button (shift or ctrl, I think) while attempting to place a forest over it. It will work, and you will end up with trees on the water. Pointless, but can look nice.

Sim Tower is absurdly entertaining... even if I kept being bombed out of house and home.

Sim City 2000 rules... apart from Civilization II, it's one of the only early- to mid-90's computer games that remains fun. The first time I played it, I had no clue how to go about building infrastructure, so I ended up building my little burg right next to one of the preinstalled ones (Sam's Town, I believe), so I could leech off of their power and water...

But once I got good, I got *good*. Triton, New Triton, Xinthridius, Powell, New Mombasa, Harcourt City... good times, good times.

Some great SC2K memories:
- "Reticulating splines"
- "This is SimCopter 1 reporting heavy traffic"
- the mad-lib newspaper articles
- "Industrial thingamajig"
- all the arcology backstories (the Narwhal 3000, the Darco's subhumans, the Greater EastAsian Co-Prosperity Sphere)
- Glorioso. That is one pretentious city.
- The whale-shaped city. WTF?

Wow, so that's it? Is it some awesomely funk-ay animation? And how many exactly did you have to get?
It's not much. You have to build several hundred Launch Arcos to get the "animation", if you can call it that. Basically, you get a text box that says something about your citizenry deciding to colonize another world. Once you click "OK", all your Launch Arcos start blowing up, one by one. And I don't mean launching into space. I mean being automatically bulldozed. So the reward for centuries of developing your small town into an Arcological wonder of millions? A city strewn with the rubble of launched arcologies, its infrastructure in tatters.

You can see it for yourself without the work -- just go to the preinstalled city called "349_arco" (or something like that). Load it up and set the speed to "African Swallow". After a few seconds, they'll start launching. Be warned, though: it takes a long time to complete, and there's no way to stop it once it starts.

Yup loved it as well as sim copter and sim farm
Sim Copter was great. Crashing into criminal cars while they shoot at you. (What's funny that if the Criminal gets injured you get a free medievac mission) Rescusing idiots from their boats. What was neat that if it was a city you made. Any flaws in it. (Bad Airfield location, Bad road system) would eventually cause problems in SimCopter. There was this intersection that was in my thing that kept getting jammed up because I didn't make enough roads in SimCity 2000.

And also...

What was cool was chasing after that damn spaceship with the Apache. You get $50,000 for crashing it. It was so annoying, always starting fires. Plus when it set the Nuclear powerplant on fire it nuked the city.

How to get cruel in the riots.
I had a patented 5 step plan for that.

1. Use the Megaphone disperse thing.
2. Pick up a ton of police officers, call cars in to stop it.
3. The bucket and the Water cannon.
4. Bombardment of Tear Gas.
5. (By this time if they're still at it then who cares) Go grab the Apache, and come back...

At the risk of being lynched, I have to say that I never liked Sim City.

Put those stones down! Let me explain.

I like the idea of the games, and have both the very original and one of the latest, Sim City 4, I think. I just could never get into the games, because I never found a way of making it actually work. As far as I could tell, no matter how much you raised taxes (causing everyone to leave) and cut costs (causing everyone to strike), your income was still always about 10 times lower than the outgoings, and the city went bust.

If someone would tell me how to actually play what you all say is a good game, I would be grateful!

Hah! You just didn't have enough security teams. I paid for the first few times, then I got tired of it and stuck a dozen extra security stations. Never got bombed after that.

I had problems with wait lines on the lifts though. The whole place was so populated it got to the point where there'd be queues miles long at the lifts and people who lined up at 6am got down at 9pm.

Kinda like government service lines :p

Hmm, how did I play SC2000. I think I always used hydroplants at the beginning. They're more expensive per MWh, but you get a lot less wasteage and no replacement costs. Don't build any amenities or enact any ordinances (except gambling), until your advisors and the newspaper start screaming at you to build/enact them. Always build low density in the beginning. If growth does slow then it probably just means you need to conect your city to a neighbour. Oh, and don't build a water system until later on.

Basically, if it's time to do something other than zoning RCI then the newspaper will let you know (youonly need to have extra ticked and not subscription).

I haven't played that game in years, yet I still remember it vividly.

Yeah, I've had that problem too. I'm still working on it, but it's starting to get better. I think part of the key is to stagger zones as much as possible and use the congestion map/routes query as often as possible. I've even been able to keep a few of the dense residential towers from becoming abandoned or deteriorated as well. It'll take time but I think I'll be able to solve the problem once and for all.

Yeah. One of the multiplayer levels is located in a maglev train station in New Mombasa, and has a wall-sized map of the city plastered onto one wall. I just snagged a picture of it from the Internet and went to town.

The space elevator is a Forest Arco, the massive towers with the skybridges between them are Plymouth Arcos, the suspension bridge over Kilindini Harbor is actually a suspension bridge, and even all the maglev lines (given on the map) are accurate.

Build more industrial and residential... or an airport or road/highway connections.

SC2K is the r0xx0rz. I just mastered a city not too long ago - called it Miralis, and I made it to be a more "artful" city than I'd done in the past. God hated it though. I played all the way to the arcos with no disaster on, and a hurricane would happen every other year and just ruin it. I would get plain crashes on a yearly basis (if not more than once a year) and I had to reload it a few times. At 2264 I had gotten all the Arcos and I was like "the heck with this crap" and just turned disasters off.
SC4's graphics don't look that impressive. Heck, I downloaded a SCURK set that had some of the big towers in there.

Going waay back in time, I once had the Sim City Nintendo game, which was a ported version of the original computer game. Anyway, early one morning my sister was playing and accidentally deleted one of my cities, a very large and successful one. I got up later and found a confession note about the affair. I then found my sister in the kitchen pantry, where she had gone to give herself a very long time-out for the deletion.

I look forward to getting SC4 one of these days, but it would be unwise of me to go buy it before I finish school. But in two months it might be my graduation gift to myself.

Nah, I was never really good with SCURK. Besides, I figured that the arcologies matched up with most of the larger landmarks anyway.

Wheres the fun in that? You haven't lived until you've sweated out that first century, trying to juggle keeping the economy from imploding, getting that bloody airport built, storing up enough cash to renew that already heinously overstressed coal fired power plant, and weathering the hurricanes that seem to come every other year. Taking the whole building of roads out of the equation loses half the fun, and I would imagine crimps one's building style in the relative size and shape of one's zones.

Ahhhh. SimCity.

My first taste was the SC port to the SNES. I loved it so much I hired it out from the video store and never returned it (ie. I nicked it.) But they were selling all their SNES for 6 bucks a pop 2 weeks later, anyway.

I never got quite the same feel from SC2000, even though I was still addicted for months on end. I think it's just one of those nostalgia things and if I was stick the SC cart into my SNES now I'd probably be horrified.

I skipped 3000 altogether, but I got 4 and find it really enjoyable. Though I wish they'd picked a classier GUI style instead that obnoxious "The Sims" style.

Neat... I'd never seen a tileset exchange before -- only city exchanges. I'm surprised that sites like that still exist. SC2000 is practically *ancient*.

I've worked out the problem with SC4 in regards to a ridiculous number of abandoned buildings. It's not so much long commute times, although that's partly the case, it's a lack of high wealth jobs. For some reason rich people will happily live anywhere that has running water and a school or hospital within 8 blocks (you only need one of the two...), even if it's next to a landfill, coal power plant or cruise missile testing range . The places without running water are only for those pauper middle classes. I also get way too much residential demand when every single house is out of work for some reason. SC3 was better, you wouldn't get any development if there was no water connected (which is more realistic, come on) and things like land values and river or hilltop views actually meant something, rather than mansions being built surrounded by factories.

On the other hand, SC4 has a cheat to turn the advisors into llamas. That alone makes everything worth it.

if it was free i'd be playing it now. i remember the first sim city. i like the idea of maybe a sim boonies or a sim countryside or a sim country (nation states?)

i think old sid did do a sim island or something like that.

some of the things 'nature' throws at you in the games are pretty unrealisticly off the wall. while some of the things nature and other circumstances throw at regeonal management aren't even approached in the games, too complex for game mechanics and perhapse attention spans of potential audiences who want to pretend they can slash and hack there way out of or into anything, at least in their game world fantasies.

never played the 2000 version. or had any of them. but there was someplace i was able to hang out and get to play with the origeonal sim city to get a bit of a feel for it. so that is what i'm saying is based upon.

In my opinion, SC3K sucked.

But, if we were to compete against each other in SC2K, you would lose. I've practiced on there because that's the Sim game I truly love, and that leads to a lot of playing, which leads up to lots of experience.

thinking about it some more, let's bring this back into the thread. in this world, clippy is a pointless waste of time and screen real estate. in SimCity, clippy tells you how to make deals with your neighbors, how to keep your residents happy, how to have a baby, get a good career, get married, have a happy family, and ... how to commit suicide if that's what you want to do.

but I still want to konw how you do it with pastry.

as for it being funny, if clippy showed up even though I switched him off, and offered to guide me through writing my suicide note, I'd be laughing so hard I'd stop being depressed and decide not to kill myself.

SPORE HAS THE POTENTIAL TO BE THE BEST (HOPEFULLY SERIES OF) GAME(S) TO EVER BE MADE!:)

graphics sure as hell made an improvement.

i really need to get up to date on games

(most recent PC game bought was Civ I, SC2K, AOEII, and Rainbow Six [the first] that was years ago)

but i enjoy all of them too much to get anything new, because all sequels are anymore is the same game re-hashed with pretty colors and graphics, but not much else.
Get CivIII. civ4 is fun, but not much better and it runs slow. I like civ3 wiht the expansion packs better.

Civ III is great, but I like how in Civ IV you have get money off of the people with your religion.

And, if Civ IV runs slow on your PC (as I know this problem all too well) then you should either check out your video card or your harddrive, 'cuz if your video card isn't a RADEON 9800 (or higher) or NVIDEA GeForce 3 (or higher) your PC's gonna' be struggling just to play the game on low graphic resolution.

(Trust me, my PC has a half-assed video card, I'm afraid to buy Spore when it comes out for fear my PC will crash eternally, buying a better video card will probably make the game faster, if not, then check out your harddrive, and explore your computer.)
