sometimes I swim by treading in a direction. its fun. Often, one can get a nice gliding movement throught the water.

I realise the gliding movement is easy to get with most any swimming stroke, but I just like treading.

Best I've done? Not actually sure, last time I timed it my swim instructor got bored after 20 minutes... Funny thing is, I'm not really a strong swimmer, I can just tread water really well. Maybe its my natural floatation;)

5-10 minutes or so at last attempt...

...which was a couple of years ago.

A very VERY long time. I've never tried to see how long I could go, but it would definitely be above 5 minutes.

I'm a certified/trained lifeguard, not to mention an excellent swimmer.

I've tread water for 2 hour and 39 minutes. Why 2hr39m? Because that's how long it took for a paddleboat to reach me from the otherside of a lake after my boat sank in 30 feet of water.

Yeah, I think imminent danger would lift the duration dramatically. :P

ditto that

half an hour, ten minutes with hands out of the water, one minute holding a 10lb brick out of the water.

Hmm, well that depends, salt water, or natural? Cuz you can bob in the ocean forever so Im guessing thats out. Me I dunno maybe 10 minutes, more if my life depended on it. I've never really tried.

I don't know what treading water is :). Considering I'm not the best swimmer, I don't think it would be a very long time though lol.

not long enough to be useful in a survival situation

In SCUBA class, we had to tread water whilst holding a 10-lb brick. I was very good at it :B.
