I am not a socialist, but I hate Texas. It takes FOREVER to drive through that bitch. I drive between Arizona and Florida once a year, and it seems like time stops when you are in Texas- you think "I have been in Texas for 6 hours, I must be close to the other side!" Nope. You're not even halfway through that monster. A space-time anomaly exists along I-10. And it's always hot, and there are cops everywhere. I HATE Texas.

Living in Texas is infinitely worse (unless you are fundamentalist and conservative, in which case you would be part of the problem), especially if you have the misfortune to be stuck in the north-eastern - I mean, "Bible Belt" part of the state. Believe me, I have first-hand experience in the matter.
(Side note: despite appearances, Austin is not a part of Texas - the most conservative part of Austin is probably the Capitol building. For that matter, my current school isn't a part of Texas either ( :) ) - which is why I'm annoyed that I'm on summer vacation. :( )

Many of the stereotypes of texas are false, or rather, they became false about 50 or so years ago when industrialization began around here. for one thing, about half of texas is, while not mountainous, not totally flat either (I am referring to east-northeast texas, where most of the population is) Also, there are plenty of trees, and Tornadoes are not constantly spawning everywhere. It is hot and dry alot, though. The place that is most like the stereotypical Texas of old is NM in some areas, at least.
However, some of the government decisions, I will agree, have been bad. Freedom of Religion is actually being stiffled in some counties. Christian school clubs, while not exactly disbanded, have several times been put under heavy regulation, and one was even asked to PAY the school it was at for permission to use the classroom for 'non-educational activities'. Also, there was an incident a couple years back where a little boy was told he could not pass out candy canes for christmas and school because they foisted religion on people. Also, there has been some rather expensive bouts of Highway construction, where they painted and decorated frivolisly many miles of the High 5 ( its nickname, I think) George Bush's name is everywhere, on street signs and toll ways. Oh, and the place where I live (north of Dallas) is like some idyllic sheltered perfectville microcosm compared even to nearby cities like D/FW.
Edit:^^^Lol me and the person above me have totally different views.
In my opinion, while the people are religious, the establishment is not, especially the schools.

"Government stifling Freedom of Religion"... "Christian school clubs under regulation"... "establishment not religious"... just where in Texas do you live, exactly? Oh, wait... "north of Dallas"... nevermind. At the moment, I'm spending several months of the year north of Dallas (I suspect the word "Denton" has some meaning to you), and I can see why somebody living north of Dallas might disagree with my assessment of Texas.
See, when I'm not at home away from home, I live in northeast Texas... a place that can probably be described as "redneck country" and "very Bible Belt". At my old school, the vast majority of the student body and a good number of the teachers were very Republican and very Christian (to the extent that there were only 6-10 people in the Young Democrats, and probably about that many athiests and agnostics). Those teachers that actually covered evolution in biology and general science classes either tried to support creationism directly or watched as their students argued against anyone who openly supported (for lack of a better word) evolution. For that matter, school officials clearly supported the Christian school groups, to the extent of letting one (large) Christian club use the school flag pole for their prayer meetings.
All in all, northeast Texas isn't a place where atheists and agnostics (or even Muslims and Hindus, for that matter) are looked upon kindly.

Wait wait wait...how is that a BAD thing? And do you know what freedom of religion means? It doesn't mean "Christians can do whatever the hell they want, screw everybody else". Nor does it mean "we should be able to pray on the taxpayer's dime because this is a Christian Nation, after all". Separation of Church and State, remember? Religious groups, ALL of them(even your beloved Christian ones),should be on a level playing field. So unless the school charges Christians but lets Muslims, Jews, and Atheists have classroom space for free, you have NO gripe. You BELONG in Texas with those views, IMHO. I am just glad that your "points" show that the government appears to finally have joined the modern world.

1. It's hot as hell all the time, except right after it rains. Then it's hot and muggy.
2. Everyone from Texas speaks mexican, spanish and english, in that order.
3. 59N at 610 is the most congested freeway exchange in the nation.
4. If Austin has all the gays & liberals, then explain Montrose?
5. We've got thousands upon thousands of transplanted New Orlean's people who have made Houston their new home.
6. Since Hurricane Katrina our crime rates have been steadily rising.
7. They keep wanting to build light rail through neighborhoods. The light rails go from nowhere to downtown & back again. Yay for progress.

1. Most "Texans" are recent transplants from other parts of the US and Mexico or their children. People have been flooding into the state since the 50's.
2. The Bush's are not from Texas. They are from Conneticut and just like to play cowboy.
3. Texas five major cities (Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Fort Worth, and Austin) are all fairly liberal. Just the cities, not the 'burbs. Most of them even have pro gay laws on the books and all of them have large and thriving gay communities. However (and sadly), it's also a really big, heavily populated rural state with tons of rednecks outside of the cities who greatly influence state (and federal) politics.
4 Like any other place, it has its pros and cons. If you are into materialism, unfetterd and unregulated capitalism, extreme individualism, and a touch of moralism, this is the place for you. If, however, you are like me and lean towards people over profit, aren't into keeping up with the Jones, believe in social responsibility, and believe that privacy is a right, Texas comes off as a bit of a freak show.

It wasn't the candy canes they objected to. It was the religious literature attached to the candy that they had a problem with. It was a bunch of clap trap about how the red stripes represented the blood of christ and such.
But then that is how the churches around here operate. The bribe children into joining their churches. When I was quite young (about 9), a woman up the street form me offered to give me a quarter every sunday I went to her church (rhymes with paptist). She would also give me a quarter for every "guest" I brought with me. Once there, the church would shower the kids with candy to keep them interested. And for teens they ramp it up. Teens are lured into the church with ski trips and the threat of becoming a social outcast if thy don't go. The churches down here are filled with some truly deceitful and manipulative bastards who will go to any length to force their "message" on others.

On Texans? At least their Southern dialect is understandable. Despite the sterotype, they are not nearly as proud of their state as most Californians, and I thank them for it.

True, Texas votes around high forty-ish liberal... or whatever.

I would like to point out that pretty much every group of people in a certain region say this of their women. In Analucia, Scottland, Finland, St. Petersburg, Western Michigan and pretty much all over the entire planet this phenomenon can be observed. I have concluded that it is not courteous worldwide to say that women are ugly. I have also concluded that there are hot people everywhere.

I am probably the only Okie who loves Texas. But I live on the border and actually live in Texas but conduct most of my business in Oklahoma though the county is Texas County. Texas is my favorite state with Oklahoma being a close second. I cant really stand houston and austin though. The areas close to mexico are really starting to suck and are more mexico than Texas these days.
Texas has given the US two of its greatest presidents (Bush and Bush) and the worst president (johnson) luckily the days of Texas being a democratic state ended when Bush killed off ann richardson (they even fled the state once)! Since that election Texas has rapidy ascended to being the best state in the US. Even though Texas shares a border with louisianna, arkansas, and mexico, it is still the best state in the country and will remain that way for a long, long time.
Coincidentally, I'm writing this post whilst reviewing the new Dixie Chicks album. Strange how that works.

I'm messing with Texas, and there's nothing you can do about it.:p
LOL! That is easiest the funniest thing I've ever seen. :D
As far as my own opinion of Texas: I've been to Pasadena and Houston, and I can't really say I hate it. The people are a mixed bag- like every city really- but I do think the conservatism stuck out like a sore thumb. The bus system is crap (where I was in Pasadena- a 140,000-plus city no less- the closest bus stop was an hour and a half walk), everyone drove an expensive car or a Sports Utility Vehichle, and the only minorities I remember seeing worked the extremely low-end jobs. It was a revelation coming from decidedly liberal Ontario (where a community of 20,000 somehow can manage a bus service), but I didn't think it was evil (I felt more out of place, really). One thing that really did strike me was those super-sized soft drink containers the McDonald's had with "Don't Mess With Texas" emblazoned on it- it made me think that "Things Really Are Bigger In Texas". :D

If you don't like the conservatism, try Austin.
To quote a better man then myself:
umm.... God Bless Texas
I seen a lot of places...i've been around the world
I've seen some pretty faces There was some beautiful girls
After all i've witnessed One things still amazes me
Just like America You have to see to believe
[chorus]
God Bless Texas with His own hand
Brought down angels from the promise land
Gave em' a place where they could dance
If you wanna see heaven brother here's your chance
I've been sent to spread the message
God bless Texas
First he let the sun shine
Then he made the water deep
Then he gave us moonlight for all the world to see
Well everybody knows that the Lord walks in mysterious ways
He took a risk then on the very next day
[chorus]
(guitar solo)

I've been sent to spread the message
God Bless Texas

Texas, Our Texas
Written by William J. Marsh and Gladys Yoakum Wright
Composed by William J. Marsh
Texas, Our Texas! all hail the mighty State!
Texas, Our Texas! so wonderful so great!
Boldest and grandest, withstanding ev'ry test
O Empire wide and glorious, you stand supremely blest.
Texas, O Texas! your freeborn single star,
Sends out its radiance to nations near and far,
Emblem of Freedom! it set our hearts aglow,
With thoughts of San Jacinto and glorious Alamo.
Texas, dear Texas! from tyrant grip now free,
Shines forth in splendor, your star of destiny!
Mother of heroes, we come your children true,
Proclaiming our allegiance, our faith, our love for you.
God bless you Texas! And keep you brave and strong,
That you may grow in power and worth, throughout the ages long.
God bless you Texas! And keep you brave and strong,
That you may grow in power and worth, throughout the ages long

A few weeks ago, my boss and I were working north of Austin in ultra-conservative Williamson County, and we had to pick up some paperwork at the courthouse. As we passed through security, one of the ignorant rednecks they use for cops took a break from harassing people long enough to notice my boss's "Keep Austin Weird" hat, and state "Up 'ere in Will-yum-sum County, we like to keep things nice and boring."
It took every ounce of willpower I had to make it out of there without laughing in his face. First off, there's the obvious fact that it was an extremely lame-ass line, but what really made me laugh was thinking that keeping Williamson County boring would be about as challenging as keeping water wet.
Yeah, Austin should be kept weird. That is, every other part of the US should be kept from becoming like Austin, so it keeps standing out. That means California and NY need some reform, too.

A safe, clean city with a good local economy, lots of parkland, a diverse, tolerant population, and tons of local activities and traditions. Yeah, we wouldn't want that to spread.

How exactly WASN'T he?
If jesus was a socialist, he was a really bad one.
He never used A DIME OF GOVERNMENT MONEY! And he was always doing things through private organizations, not gov't. And he had help from God, something the founders of socialism had a hard time accepting.

This is what I have to ask all you socialists out there- Do you like Texas?
I don't think I could fairly claim to hate the entire state of Texas, since I know there are some fun places and cool people there. However, I can certainly say that I hate what Texas has come to stand for in current culture: xenophobia, pride in one's own ignorance, homophobia, superstition, and fake cowboys who like to bomb things instead of doing their fucking jobs.

It's strange. I left Texas at 18, and it's true. Texan women are on average more attractive. I'm just not sure why that's the case. It befuddles me. And fills me with joy at the same time. :D

I don't hate Texas, it's the only state in the old "south" where I would actually consider living, well in the metropolitan areas at least.
