I honestly don't care what you think of any particular war. That's your business. But please do take just a moment today to be thankful for all my brothers and sisters who have done what they thought was right and who gave their lives so that you and I could have at least the opportunity to continue to be free.

*Raises her cup-o-joe in honor*

Thank you to all the past and present men and women who gave their lives for something they believe in. I hope their families will be celebrating the fond memories and good times they shared while they were alive. Peace be with you/them.

It's truly sad that all these brave men and women are no longer here, let them rest in peace.

A salute to all who have served, and a moment of silence for those who did not come home.

Happy Memorial day everyone. Nows the time to salute the troops and our commander-in-cheif for keeping us free. Americans be happy we have a great military and remember the fallen. Non- Americans thank them for your freedom too.

Last night at the Coca Cola 600 race, they had a salute to Memorial Day, where they sang and played Amazing Grace on a bagpipe, had the gun salute (forgot how many guns), and played taps on a bugle. It almost made me cry. I thank all the men and women who fight for our freedom, and even though some of them never come home alive, I still thank them. Today I put flowers on my grandpa's grave.

For the sake of this thread, I'll not respond to this ridiculous comment. If you want to debate that, perhaps you should start a seperate thread?

Dude, Noooo. Come on.

First of all, I show respect for all those wounded and killed in the line of duty- but that doesn't include the president. This isn't a "go shrub!" rally, it is a day of memorial for those who have sacrificed themselves for this country.

Actually, I think I'll just thank my own nation's military, thanks.

Don't pay any attention to Bobo- he just has misplaced nationalism. And people like him are the reason America has such a bad international reputation.

Last time I checked, the UK had armed forces before the U.S. even existed. Please stop. I appreciate that you are proud to be an American, I am too. But being a historically inaccurate self-righteous asshole isn't the way to celebrate Memorial Day.

edit: I see this was covered already while I was typing- sorry, I had to get my Hot Pocket mid-post.

November 11th is for the end of WW1. This one is for more general purposes, I believe.

Whats the difference between this Memorial Day and the November 11th Rememberance Day?

Remembrance Day is in Europe, Memorial Day is in the U.S.

11/11 was the end of WWI, thus it is a good European day because of the staggering loss of life in Europe during WWI. The U.S. entered WWI too late in the war to have lost anywhere near the amount of troop as England, France, Germany, etc- far more soldiers died in other U.S. wars. We still celebrate Remembrance day (but call it Veteran's Day), but needed another bank holiday, so...

memorial day is when we honor the fallen, Veterans day(11/11) is when we honor those who served and are still here.

Hats off to all Military Vets. Thank you for doing that which I could not, and the Sacrifices you gave so that we can stand here and enjoy the Freedoms and Liberties that they bought us.

What? It was Memorial day? (http://uncyclopedia.org/wiki/UnNews:Bush_Cancels_%22Unpatriotic%22_Memorial_Day)

WASHINGTON, D.C. —A bill cancelling Memorial Day was signed today by President Bush, who called the celebration "unpatriotic". Under the new law, this year's Memorial Day will not take place and anyone caught trying to remember the dead will be fined. Bush commented, "Look, I know people like to remember our fallen soldiers, but we're in a war here. The more people are reminded of the deaths that can result from war, the less they're going to support our war. That's just what Al Qaeda wants. If we allow Memorial Day to go on, then the terrorists have won."

Conservative pundits praised the move. Said FOX News commentator Bill O'Reilly: "Those treasonous commies over at the other news organizations just love to undermine the government by reminding us of people who have died in the war. Now that Memorial Day is cancelled, however, they have one less weapon with which to attack our core American beliefs."

"Shut up," O'Reilly added.

Not everyone is pleased, however. CBS News anchor Bob Schieffer remarked, "I concede that it might not be the best for Iraq War support if we're reminded that war is a terrible thing that should be avoided at all costs, but shouldn't there be some acknowledgement of their great sacrifice?" Schieffer was promptly fired.

Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld offered a different view: "We don't allow coffins being brought home to be photographed, do we? This is the same thing. Imagine if everyone were constantly reminded of the human cost of our decision to go in and take out the government of a sovereign nation. Why, we'd never get anything done."

Jokes aside, the honourable soldiers ALWAYS have my deepest respect and gratitude, those that have fallen doubly so.
