Do You Download?

Dude111

I don't, but I have another method. I just go to the library, take out CDs, and then burn them at home and then return the original copy. I don't download because I'm afraid of getting viruses and such. However, if it's a CD by an obscure band or a band that's not very famous, I will buy the CD to demonstrate my support for them. So, I would buy the Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, or The Clash CD, but I will most certainly burn the Rolling Stones or Beatles CD.

You can't get viruses through the common media files.

And, Bittorrent is where it's at, coupled sometimes with gnutella.

Yup. Either old or hard to find, or stuff I've seen in the music store but don't know yet if I'll like enough to buy the CD.

Yes, stuff by bands i don't like enough to buy the CD's, bands where i only like a few of their songs. I buy the CD's of the bands i like. I have never had any problem with viruses, it usually depends on what program you use. I use Morpheus and have never had issues.

Dude -- DK, Black Flag and The Clash aren't exactly obscure. You really want to support a band, go to a concert and pay $15 for the CD the group's selling. Trust me, those three bands are doing fine financially. Find a used CD shop while you're at it. Half price or less and you're not paying the record company.

I only download songs to CDs I have previously bought and lost, which is legal, for buying a CD is just a lifetime license to have that music, and they're nice enough to give you a copy.

Is it the high prices or the clerks who know nothing about music (like at most big stores that have a CD section)?
The Mindset
29-05-2006, 04:43
I contest the idea that downloading, illegally, is somehow "stealing." I've only bought one CD in my entire life, and that was prior to obtaining the internet. I would not spend money on music, regardless of whether or not I had the internet. What, exactly, am I stealing? The music companies would not get my money either way - I'm not "stealing" revenue, nor am I stealing the songs themselves because stealing implies a loss of some kind - I'm taking copies, not taking the actual song.

I download. Lots. Always have, always will. I've been threatened by the MPAA on multiple occasions with American laws. I laughed. Lots. Always have, always will.

All music should be free. Merchandising and concert tickets should not.

i always seem to end up disappointed when i try to dl stuff, so i tend not to bother these days after years of not finding what i want or ending up with those shitty fake songs full of static, or not being able to actually get the whole album (and i like having full albums or not at all... i'm weird :P)

bittorrent also takes up too much of my bandwidth (ie all of it) to use during the day, and i can't sleep with my computer on at night. if i could really be bothered i'd build a new computer to stick in another room to dl with BT all day, or a silent one to dl at night, but i'm really not that fussed... i like some of the mistique that goes with getting new CDs :)

Yes. In the last week I downloaded Series 2 Episodes 1-5 of Lost (now deleted), a Coheed & Cambria discography (now deleted), and a Cooper Temple Clause album (not yet deleted, I'm still considering if it's worth buying). Legal implications don't bother me at all. I still buy cds, although I've not bought one for about a month now. Most music I buy is on vinyl.

If you need to limit your bandwith, and your P2P client of choice isn't good at it, I suggest you use NetLimiter or similar. If you can't sleep with your PC on, turn it off. If your computer gets sluggish when you're running a P2P client, use a less resource heavy client, or one that lets you define the HW usage.

Most P2P sites are full of people willing to talk you through your problems.

I do lots of downloads. Sky movies by broadband, the occasional music track from HMV, operating systems (Kubuntu is my current favourite) and free music off obscure artist's homepages.

What's illegal about that?

Yeah, but usually albums I really want to hear, but can't find anywhere else - i'd want to try them before paying to have them shipped over from the US and waiting 4 weeks or so for delivery.

I download frequently, particularly movies. If I really like an artist or a movie I will purchase it, but otherwise I will download it. I consider $18 for a CD to be utter bullshit, and I have no problem with ripping off any label greedy enough to charge that much. :)

If you pay the artists...fine

If the artists are not getting paid...then that is theft.

End of story.

However it does not excuse the extreme lenghts the RIAA and BPI have gone to secure damages.

As it is many of the new bands (look at the Artic Monkeys as a case study) are bypassing the record companies...good!!!

Technically it is not. The one offering the upload is however giving away material he is not allowed to distribute; making his (or her) actions criminal.

If the downloading is considered a crime depends on the country. Of course, knowingly acquiring goods you know the distributor is not allowed to distribute is already dodgy.

(Note: the above only applies to the distribution of copyrighted material without permission. Things like linux are of course fine)

I recommend BiComet.

Make sure to reduce the upload rate of your client. If the client uses your full upload bandwidth for sharing files, you won't have enough upload bandwidth left to confirm incoming packages and your overall download rate will drop, including your browser.

Why would anyone steal...period. Get a fucking job.
Two points:
1. Why would anyone want to steal period? That's just kinda gross, if you ask me.

Unless it's do with horses or midgets, but what can I say? I'm prejudiced.
