As the country i was born and lived in my whole life, im rather curious on what other people think of it.

Good or bad things on anything you know about this place, what comes to your mind when Portugal is said to you?

And yay for my useless first thread.

As I live in Brazil, you really don't want to know. :p

But then again, I'm an ignorant American...

I think of crap penalty spots made of sand, then getting beaten on penalties.

I've never been there. But it sounds like a nice nation. Never does anything bad.

I think we do nothing at all. Period. :p
Like i thought, no one really knows much about Portugal, we all know its somewhere on Earth, and people actually live on it.
Well, can i expect something more concrete? I'm really just curious to find out what other people from other countries wherever know or think of here. As i said, good or bad, i dont mind. Just curious, really.

When I think of Portugal I think of the revolutionaries of modern navigation and early colonization.

I also think of that little strip of land west of Spain on the Atlantic Ocean. :p

Hey, I know a bit about Portugal, and Im American. :D

About equal to Spain in terms of historical evilness, what with the slavery, and the conquests, and all that lovely stuff. And then there was the Salazar thing, which doesn't sound too appealing to me.

As for now though, it doesn't sound too bad and i'll probably visit when I eventually make a trip to Europe; of course, the latin women are a bonus. *nods*

Portugal is next to Spain. Uh....I don't know much else. Oh yeah! Your capital is Lisbon!

Oh, I know a little about Portugal, but the reputation of the Portuguese here is not one that you would want broadcast over NS.

To be fair though, the stupidity thing is just stereotyping, and not all Portuguese women have moustaches. :p

It must be galling though for those Portuguese that don't live in the Algarve to have the entire country thought of as being the Algarve. (Rather like Brazil and Rio). The North of Portugal, particularly the Gerês area has always seemed to me to be an interesting place to go to. Perhaps one year I will be able to visit.

You mean portugal is still a country??? Hmmm...what doesn't spain just conquer it, and have all of the iberian peninsula to itself?

Yeah, come to think of it, if the Algarve declared independance, Portugal would go bankrupt (i know it already is...but..you know..)so that claim isn't as ilegitimate as one would think:p

But let me tell you, it really sucks being invaded every year. I mean, the female population rises exponentially, which is good. Gets too crowded, though. Either way, "it sucks to live here, but i wouldn't live anywhere else".

There's a cruel irony in all of this, because our successive governments seem to be obcessed with our "international image", but, no matter how hard they try, it just doesn't seem to be enough. And so, the city of Porto is still in Spain, apparently:rolleyes:

Really? I honestly thought Portugal reputation in Brazil was good. I really had no idea, thats why i made this thread :D
From what i see most people here love Brazil, really, Portuguese are beachaholics (yes, just like the Algarve case, people here think all of Brazil is hot beaches and lots of bikinis). Not to mention Brazillian soaps play an important role in many older people life around here :p

And they never will. I mean, im not even complaining, even if Portugal for some reason would start being a part of Spain, and enjoy the same governament, it would probably even be better. Most portuguese people hate being mistaken by spanish though, i dont really mind, just like many other people dont know Portugal is not dependent of Spain, the average portuguese person doesnt know jack about other countries anyway.

Why, hello fellow Portuguese whoever you are. :D
By your post i would say you live in Algarve, no?

I dont live there, i've been there lots of times thought, and i know how it is being invaded by tourists every year, by the summer. Even portuguese from the north and center all go to Algarve for their vacations (thats why ive been there loads of times, with my family), but i honestly think ptguese people, for a change could go spend their money elsewhere. They spend more in Algarve than having a trip to almost anywhere xD

MUAHAHAHA! It's all really an evil plot by us southerners to use currency from all over the world to hire a HUGE army of mercenaries and conquer the world!!! EVIL, i say!

Yes, i'm "algarvian":p Hot and sunny all year (not quite, but chicks dig it, and as far as i'm concerned, keep'em coming). But i seriously don't get it. I get insanely bored living here, and yet, people flock here from all over the place. And yet, the general opinion of us seems to be...quite....er, sucky?

Reminds me of last year's edition of "Euroscola", i was part of the portuguese "delegation" (our school was representing the country in the European Parliament, together with other schools from other countries, to discuss shitty solutions to shitty problems). At one time, the representatives of the parliament were introducing the schools to each other. Applause all around. When they introduced us.....silence....Basically, only the spanish(ironic, no?) and the irish (representing the UK) applauded. Lame:(

The Brazilian soap (novelas) thing just reinforces the image of stupidity. There has to be something more intelligent to watch, even if it is only Bob Esponja!

I agree with you. I dont watch soaps, but erm, i dont know if you ever saw one, but portuguese soap are much worst than brazillian ones. There is this particular one called "Morangos com Açucar" which is just the worst thing to air on TV, ever. Its directed to the young crowd, and youngsters (aswell some older people) love it, it generates lots of money and they even made a shitty pop band that is a "success" in here.

Portugal's awesome, as far as I know. Have to get round to reading the Lusiads one of these days. The portuguese language is amazing, and they had a formidable empire in their time. Wick.:D

I can get RTPi on satellite, and have seen about 30 seconds of the occasional Portuguese novela. Enough to recognise that you have a point.

I have a bunch of friends from Portugal (all gay XD)...and I love them. A bit hyper-emotional at times, but fun. As for the country, well it could be doing better. One thing my one friend constantly harps on about is what a great empire it had. Definitely not the case now...

Portugal? First things that come to my mind:

1) Beaches
2) Sea
3) Nice weather
4) Exploration history
5) Small size but big colonial empire
