I accidentally shattered my laptop's lcd screen...how much should it cost to replace...because the company said it would cost just over half the price of the computer($700). I would think it $200 at the most. Corporate Greed at best?

That's how the bastards make their money. A mate of mine's cat managed to crack his widescreen LCD TV, and it was going to cost more to replace the screen than it was to buy a whole new one.
Bastards.

In that case, he should buy a new one. From a different company. And put it somewhere his cats can't reach.

Check eBay to see if anyone's selling a replacement screen (or a parts laptop with a good screen). It's a lot cheaper than buying one new. Here's eBay's page for laptop parts: http://computers.listings.ebay.com/Laptop-Parts-Accessories_W0QQfromZR4QQsacatZ31530QQsocmdZListingItemListQQssPageNameZdcpComputersTextNonFeat

Tech support exists to help you DIY, instructions online, etc etc. I can not speak from personal experience, word on the street is quite good.

Laptop screens have always been stupidly expensive to replace...and it will continue to be so unfortunately....believe me...I speak from experience...
Most manufacturers will quote you - buy a new laptop...so half price is a good deal!
What I would do is just buy a monitor and hook it up...
You are going to have to get a new laptop if you want to be mobile & computer user....

Be happy with that price as the screen is the most expensive part of the computer. Also, be happy it is not a display used in aircraft. The older CRTs used in aircraft sell new for $89,000.00 and having them repaired can cost well over 50% of the original cost if the tube is burnt out. I haven't priced any of the LCDs lately, but they cost over $100k.

We had to do it twice and it was $600 each time. The company is indeed correct.
Take it to Radio Shack.

You obviously don't have a cat. There is no where a cat can't reach. In fact they have a special sense that tells them when you are trying to stop them from reaching something, and that special sense also gives them the power to reach that something and knock it over and/or sleep on it.
As for my mate, in the end, that's what he did - buy a new one. And claim the old one on insurance.

Its an LCD. How is that harmful to your eyesight if its refurbished? CRT's harmful. LCD...not seeing it.

Yeah but are you willing to take a risk that there is nothing wrong with a refurbished LCD screen?
Actually I wonder what work would be done to refurbish a screen?

Having dealt with that company I have no fears of it.
I do see your point though.

Good question. I know they can resurface them. Beyond that I am not sure.

Well I do not know if you have a radio shack but radio shack can repair anything. I took my laptop to them to fix the LCD Screen. Still cost me $600 but it saved me from buying another screen to attach to my laptop.

Unless you got your Laptop there, its going to cost you an Arm and a leg or they will not touch it.
Take it to radio shack. They will fix it for you good as new. Still going to cost but at least it won't be a refirbished part and they do garuntee their work.
Also about Radio Shack. Though they require a check out the product fee as I call it that you do have to pay, you do not pay anything else beyond that unless you authorize the repairs.
