Themed Movie Night
Any good ideas for themed movie nights? Someone on a recent post mentioned a Steven Seagal movie marathon, which could be interesting. A friend of mine has maybe 6-8 people over weekly for "bad movie night" which is their version of Mystery Science Theater 3000.
A group of friends and I have been pushing around the idea of a "crazy Swayze" weekend, where we watch such epic Patrick Swayze films as ROADHOUSE or POINT BREAK.
What movie nights have you had, or discussed having?
I forgot about Red Dawn, definitely "Crazy Swayze Weekend" worthy...

Come on, people. A themed movie night year isn't complete without the hilarity of a Monty Python or even jsut Pythonesque night. That means the Python films, and things like "A Fish Called Wanda" as well, and so on.
I agree with Metal on the Star Wars Marathon..... although the original 3 make a perfect marathon....

Its worth watching, yes. No way in hell is it one of the worst ever made... unless you don't like Pythonesque humour or the British sense of humour, in which case you're dead to me anyway. :p

Could just make one HUGE marathon and watch every episode of the Flying Circus. That's like 30-35 hours of great humor.

It isn't the most brilliant movie ever made, but it is definately worth watching, yes.
I in fact wonder where you heard that rumour - because even IMDB gives it 7,7/10. It also won an oscar and 7 other awards..

They all sucked except the Jim Carrey idea. For me it's a Matt & Trey fiesta. Cannibal! The Musical, BASEketball and Team America, all separated by intermittent episodes of Southpark (my personal suggestion is Woodland Critter Christmas and Scott Tenorman must die - you don't want a musical about a cannibal followed directly afterwards by an episode with cannibalism in it).

Power of media corrupts absolutely night-Face in the Crowd, Network, and Bamboozled.
Blacklist night, heros and villians-The Front, On the Waterfront, episodes of You Are There and Adventures of Robin Hood, and King in New York. You could look up the signifigance of those films to the subject matter or I could just tell you. But you should look it up.
70s and 80s Urban Fantasy-The Warriors, Rock n' Roll Highschool, Streets of Fire, Wild Thing There are probably a bunch I'm leaving out of that but it took me freakin' forever to remember the name of Streets of Fire...

Ah, thanks man. Though some of those nights might be too academic to be all that fun, unless you're into that kind of thing.
Some more I thought of, once again, probably more for me than anything:
Jazz Night: Bird, 'Round Midnight, Mo' Better Blues, Kansas City, and maybe The Cotton Club.
German expresionist night-Metropolis, Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, M.
Future game-Rollerball, Running Man, Series 7 I was actually hoping I could remember another one but I can't. It involved motorcycles in an apoclyptic setting. OOoohh-
Survivin' the Apocolypse-Road Warrior, A Boy and His Dog*, Twelve Monkeys, and Tank Girl
Ray Harryhausen experience-Jason & the Argonauts, Seven Voyages of Sinbad, The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, and for his inspiration-the 1933 King Kong.
Three nights of car movies-
Good Racing movies (short night, except one of them is really long) Grand Prix, Winning and Le Mans.
Moonshine runner night-Thunder Road and Moonrunners (try to find out what the latter became...truth be told, good luck finding that movie...)
Ridiculous car chase Vanishing Point, the original Gone in 60 Seconds and Driver. And of course Bullitt if only 45 minutes into it...
Got stuck on the car thing there...

There is a good chance that the next time I need movie suggestions, I will be harassing you. You have fairly similar taste, and a wider knowledge of the field.
And academic is never too bad. I'm the one who suggested movies based of shakespeare. And I've done those before. Many times. Throne of Blood has been my favorite thusfar.

A friend of mine has hosted several Noir nights, which have been more or less successful. He's amassing quite a collection: Blade Runner, Laura, Slingblade, Casablanca, Maltese Falcon, etc. There are oodles and oodles or Noir out there.
For something completely different, (well, not really), I've been meaning to have a Tim Burton night for a while, too. Batman, Nightmare Before Christmas, Edward Scissorhands, etc.
Of course, my inner five-year-old pipes up with the idea for a fairy tale night: Labyrinth, Tenth Kingdom, Princess Bride, etc.

Chinatown Exploitation Night: King of Chinatown, Big Trouble in Little China, Year of the Dragon, and I know I'm missing a few...
Western Yakuza Movie Night: Black Rain (I work near a couple of the downtown Osaka locales used in it :)), Showdown in Little Tokyo, Sydney Pollack' The Yakuza, Brother, Kill Bill, and Into the Sun.
Genuine Yakuza Eiga Night: anything off this site that you can find in English http://www.supertoni.ch/
I have of a lot of other riffs on those themes if you want...

Big and Little: Big Trouble in Little China, Little Big Man, Little Big League
Mama: Big Bad Mama, Throw Mama From the Train, Black Mama, White Mama, etc

Cool World made me want an Indian motorcycle. Kinda random, but there it is...
I wanted to build a theme around Deathrace 2000 but got distracted. Roger Corman car movies was a thought, it would include the original Fast and the Furious, which not suprisingly is better than the modern version (which is not a remake, doesn't claim to be-just wanted to be clear).
Escape From New York would be a solid replacement for those who don't like Tank Girl.
I dig the Big/Little theme, that's fucking fantastic.
Serials, then and now?
Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe serials and then the 1980 film, The Shadow Strikes and then the Alec Baldwin The Shadow, Dick Tracy serial then movie. Though not actually the same character, Radar Men from the Moon featuring Cpt Cody aka The Rocket Man and The Rocketeer.
