Late 1930s Cartoons

So in school yesterday, our teacher showed us a late 1930s era Superman cartoon. It was very curious, as he pointed out, that it showed a woman with a Tommy gun mowing down gangsters. Apparently, the way he explained it, in the 30s and 40s the US wanted women to appear strong, so that they would contribute to the war effort. Contrasted with 1950s Superman cartoons, in which women can't fight at all (some kind of Communist subversion to show women with guns I guess). Thoughts? It kind of shows that pragmatism trumps tradition, the way I see it.

I guess it was 40s. I forget exactly.

Duh, Commie-Nazis.
Perhaps the views of those writing for DC comics changed due to something less subversive than government intervention?

Duh, Commie-Nazis.
In the US, in the 30s. No.
In the 40s there was a war effort going on, but in the 30s they were busy with depression, gangsters and prohibition (as well as ordinary day to day life). It was not until late 1940 that WWII had any real effect on the USA internally.

Only because I don't have the cultural references to understand it as a joke.
I don't watch the Simpsons.

Why? It is totaly irrelevant to me, given that I live in Brazil. Do you watch Casetta e Planeta? I doubt it, as it is a satire on Brazilian politics and life. (well it was, it is crap now).

Its not about relevance. Its about humour...you know, comedy? That thing that makes people laugh? ha hah hah hah? You know?
I've travelled a fair bit, and even in non-English speaking countries the Simpsons is played (after being made for nearly 18 years its gets around)
Lighten up.

Then get back to your cheesy Brasilian soaps and leave us North Americans with the REAL tv!!!!!!:D

It's not a cultural reference. The very notion of a Commie-nazi should be utterly ridiculous.
But anyway, yeah. There's a whole site devoted to the ridiculousness of old DC comics.

Hey, I'm not the one shouting here, lighten up yourself.
The Simpsons is only funny if it has a context to work from. That context is the US culture and current affairs. It is shown here, on Fox, on satelite or cable, and I have tried watching it. It simply does not work, it is not even in the slightest bit funny. The same would apply to our comedies if shown in the US.
There are comedies that transcend these limits. Things such as 'Whose line is it anyway' which depend much more on observaton of people rather than on famous faces and political situations.
It does get irritating that people think that the Simpsons, or South Park, and the like can be exported anywhere and be just as effective. They are not very funny in and of themselves. Enjoy it fine, but do not expect that everyone on an international forum will understand a joke reference to it.

I understood him to be referring to the second world war a commie-nazi conflict with the - meaning versus. (Lack of clarity in the post huh)

I'm not American, and I'm not from that landmass, yet I still find it funny.
