When Should Blair Pick Up His Medal?

Philosopy

After visiting Washington on an official engagement for what could be the last time as Prime Minister, Tony Blair and George Bush have admitted many mistakes about Iraq in a well publicised conference. What has received little press, however, is the fact that Blair has again failed to pick up the Congressional Medal he was awarded three years ago.

Blair clearly feels that the 'special relationship' with Washington is now proving so damaging to him that he continues to shun the Americans to avoid the negative press he would undoubtably receive picking up the medal. If that is his attitude, should the Americans withdraw the medal and give it to someone who actually feels proud to have fought side by side with them?

Blair's screwed either way. He should just jump the Labour ship and go pick it up post-haste!

Blair shouldn't bother picking up a medal awarded to him for participating his country in a war that many believe to have been illegal in the first place.
He also needs to step down post-haste and give the wheel of the sinking Labour Party to Gordon Brown. Otherwise they'll never be able to right themselves for the next election.

Another Labour government under Gordon Brown would be preferable to a Conservative government under David Cameron.

a Conservative government under James Cameron.
It's David "Call me Dave" Cameron.

As opposed to Anthony "Call me Tony" Blair?

I'm not entirely sure I agree. Brown has been very lackey-ish of late, and I really do wonder whether he'll do things any differently to his pseudo-thatcherist predecessor.

As much as I'd quite like to support the Labour party, it's being whipped into being the country's second Conservative party, and with Ming's Lib Dems being a complete lame duck, I'd rather have Labour forced back into its former role as the key opposition party for the people rather than remaining the Autocracy by Corporation it seems to be at the minute.

The war is good for America. Blair should be proud of that medal.

....Why? It just shows how much he's Bush's lackey; whether its good for America should be irrelevant to the leader of Britain!

I think he should pick it up. After all it's probably the only benefit from the 'special relationship' that Britain is likely to ever see.

He'll probably pick it up after he steps down as PM, so as to avoid any more political backlash.

'Special relationship'? You should have seen what happened when GW Bush's best buddy John Howard (Australian PM) turned up in the USA.

He'll pick it up at the start of his post-PM book and lecture tour - what a photo-call to start the campaign.

Agreed completely.
There really isn't a Labour party to support anymore. Just a party that's openly Conservative, and a party that's... well, pretty obvious about it but still maintains this charade of "New Labour".

Both Labour and the Conservatives, just like the Democrats and Republicans of the US, are pretty much the same party. However since Lib Dem leader Menzies can't really hope to be elected as Prime minister in the next General election, I'd prefer Labour over Conservative just the same. I wouldn't mind John Reid as Prime Minister, despite being a former Communist.

Are we talking John "100 Days" Reid? John "I gave false info" Reid? John "Labour hard-man" Reid? John "More jobs than years in the Cabinet" Reid?

They gave a Congressional Medal of Honor to an SBS (British Special Boat Service) member for saving a CIA operative in Afghanistan, apparently the first time ever to a living foreigner, although it seems from wikipedia that Canadians have been awarded them in the past whilst serving in the US armed forces.
