Apathy

There's a lot of apathy in the world concerning a lot of things. People are too lazy to bother caring about stuff that does not concern them, so they turn a blind eye. How apathetic are you?

I am variably apathetic; some days my mind can't stop working and fixating on things. Other days yet, I am highly complacent, and really don't give a damn about things (not that I'm much better when I'm in my other moods).

I feel motivated (by liquor) to say, first, that apathy in the UK isn't entirely so bad as people suggest: turnout at general elections is low, but hundreds of thousands march on the streets when an issue grabs them, so the issue is clearly in the failure of this indecently ancient system ('cmon, we're past the C14th, now!) as much as in the apathy of the general public, and, second... actually, I've forgotten, hang on.

Oh! I bet that people have always been what the modern media would describe as apathetic. I am oft puzzled by the way that we seem to think that today is somehow magically different from all the prior eras of human civilisation.

Otherwise, well, I used to care. Then I realised that the fight was between evil and more-evil, and that good never gets a look-in, and I lost some heart. Then I found artificial intoxicants and briefly was reinspired, but, on sobering-up, fell back to the same conclusion. Today, I realise that ignoring the suffering of the world is wrong, but also that if I do what's right I'll die with a NATO-standard bullet in the head, or else in gaol, and I think that it'd be best to go somewhere remote and try my damndest to ensure that I die in obscurity with the girl I love.

I don't know, re. apathy, take what you want from that.

It's not apathy.
I just simply don't care.

Apathy is the tool or republicians to make sure they win elections.

...It is a powerful tool.

I don't think that this is apathy. It's similar here in the UK. Deception, misdirection, general disenfranchisement, but it doesn't keep people from having passion (apathy being a lack of feeling).

From all I've heard, you've got Chavs, Townies, or whatever the hell you call emo kids around those parts. You've got apathy.

Now if we're talking about VOTER APATHY, I have no idea. All I know is muslins have better voter turn out then Americans.

...It's sad, but very very ironic.

Apathy may not be the best state of mind, but it makes a nice alternative to anger on occasion.

Well, MusliMs do, anyway. Sorry, the whole Muslim/muslin thing is my pet peeve. I'll stop. Apathy=bad.

Muslims are a group contrary to Americans, now? Isn't the largest Mosque in the western world somewhere in the USA?

Chavs, townies, and all that, 's not the same as emo' kids. Typically, townies will try to beat-up emo kids, and one of history's lamets fights will result. But, uh, that's not the point.

Chavs, townies, and what have you, often get quite worked-up about stuff. They just tend to be horribly, horribly ill-educated.

I just feel that the term apathy is so often directed as an insult against the masses where the fault is really with conspiracy in the elite.

If only family, faith, consumer choice were replaced with community, education, democratic accountability, apathy in the political and social spheres would fall away as a media buzz-word, which, today, is all that it really amounts to. And, I've since learned, the on-line-journal-name of the first girl I ever loved... but that's neither here nor there!

Apathy I would consider to be more of a coping mechanism to deal with the feelings of powerlessness in a situation rather than a legitimate lack of concern. It's much easier to save face by saying "I don't care" than saying "I can't do anything about it".

Yeah, the Democrats have been doing such a great job of motivating the people. They've really set themselves apart from the Republicans.

The way they voted against invading Iraq...
The way they rallied against the Patriot Act...
The inspiring candidates they've offered us....

We do still have two major parties, right?

I think there's a lot of truth to that, yes.

If we had democracy, we'd be sorted, but, alas, we're stuck with a place for everything and everything in its right place.

I don't think we have two major parties anymore. Democrats can't win an election. They can't put together a good presidential race. Kerry was a problem, he didn't have a message.

But that's neither here nor there, satire aside, voter apathy is a horrid thing, because you can't get a true view on what the people want and then people who didn't vote whine.

It pisses me off so much.

That's true, if you claim you can't do anything about it, you'll have activists all over you trying to make you do stuff that you don't think will have an impact, persuading you that you CAN do something about it. PS I don't mean voting.

Yeah, the joke about being apathetic about apathy really doesn't get old at all guys.... :p

Personally, I'm the total opposite to apathetic. I care about lots and lots of things, am interested in lots and lots of things, and am very emotional and react strongly to lots of things.
