People say, "Don't be a grammar Nazi!" or "Don't be a spelling Nazi!"
Maybe they have a point... I mean, if people don't give a damn enough to think about what they're writing, maybe it's a waste of time to point it out in the first place...
But it's aggravating to try to read carelessly written things. "Are you are..." indeed.
The only excuse is if English isn't the person's first language. Then I applaud them for at least trying... but people who are too careless to look at what they've written annoy me.

In the UK it doesn't matter about the religion, as long as they registered the marriage. So, as long as they did that, they're married.

I'm not a bastard.

I've noticed that apart from a few exceptions, overall foreign people are more adept at English than native English speakers.

Therefore, the excuse is if you're actually born into the English language.

I still think it's because you are assumed to know the language by the time you enter school, and there are no formal rigorous grammar and spelling trainings, whereas in a foreign language, they teach you everything from scratch and tell you every exception to memorize.

Shows how bad some assumptions truly are. Still, I find it sad that most parents don't even bother filling in where schools fail. I would agree though, foreigners tend to have a better grasp on languages than natives typically for that exact reason.

Well, this gets into the role of parents in a child's life. My observation tells me that most parents seem to think a child's studies should be the teachers' responsibilities, not theirs. They feed and clothe and love the child, but that's all they need to do. They also put too much faith into the school system to teach a child everything he/she needs for the next step, which I think is very naive and stupid. Of course, those who care will hunt for more information like proper grammar from other resources, but it's only a small percent of children who take this initiative. A vast majority is just waiting for someone to approach them with the information.

The thing is those parents who believe the school should be educating their children are correct. They shouldn't have to be doing this. I would naturally encourage them to given the circumstances (if the school fails, I see it as their duty to ensure their child is educated), but it definitely brings into question how well your education system is functioning...

Amazing how off-topic these threads can get.

That's right. What the question is about is whether your parents were married at your time of birth.
If your parents were married then but seperated later (like mine) still vote for the first option. If they were not married then but are still together now or even married since then, vote for the second option.

This is not supposed to be a joke. In another thread, someone insulted women who have babies out of wedlock, called them "slluts", in fact. I, myself, was born out of wedlock, and was insulted by this. So BS (teehee), also a 'bastard', set up this thread to get back at that moron who dared to insult people.

I would have to disagree. What if there was no schools? Then the parents would have to educate their own children. The schools don't care about the children as much as their parents do, so if the parents want the children to do well in school, they would have to at least take a part of the responsibility onto themselves. I'm not saying teach them everything they're going to learn, but make the learning environment better for the children, get them interested in learned, and things along that line.

That's my specialty. :D I am so skilled at jacking threads that any thread I participate in somehow *magically* gets off topic.

We don't really disagree as much as you'd think...I am just taking into consideration what most parents realistically do. Although indeed, a good parent should shoulder at least some of the responsibility of educating the child on themselves.

Actually I'm not a bastard, but your point still remains.
In the last thread I couln't help but say 'me too' as everyone else was...Damn peer pressure! I did find it really offensive though, that he said unmarried women having babies were slluts. These days people rarely get married, although it appears that most of our parents did. It currently stands at 28 to 5.

Okay, I get it now. But I can't deny the education system needs serious reform. The thing that shocked me the most about Canadian schools is that the students have practically no discipline whatsoever. Procrastination is so common it's considered normal. I'm not saying schools should be stricter, but it should promote better work ethics a LOT more than it does right now.

Definitely. Same with schools in Britain. Aside from the private ones, the rest are degenerating into breeding grounds for the nation's future chavs (what you'd call "whiggers"). It's sad, considering what Britain was once like.

Well, perhaps before shooting your mouth off, you should check that you have used correct punctuation yourself.

Your ellipses points are supposed to have a space before and after them—not just after. Here is an example of how your sentence should have appeared: “The only excuse is if English isn't the person's first language. Then I applaud them for at least trying ... but people who are too careless to look at what they've written annoy me.”

Notice the additional space!

Now, people who are overly sensitive to the way someone else writes English (or any other language for that matter) annoy me. Surely there are more pressing issues to concern yourself with. Mate, it’s not like this is a thesis or something. It’s a light-hearted poll on a public forum. Take a deep breath and calm down dude.

I've only begun reading his works recently...but I cannot believe I had not read him earlier. It is the most evocative poetry I have ever read. I somewhat envy his skill and knowledge of myths. Despite "Lamia" being one of his more exalted pieces, "Song of Four Faeries" is one of my favourites.

It's common for poets to die that young...usually due to suicide. Sort of like the poet's curse.

This is a difficult question for me. I was born a bastard, however, my parents married soon after my birth. Thus, I was not a bastard anymore as my parents were now married. I think that's how it works. BUT, my parents have now divorced (not separated), does that make me a bastard again? Well there is another factor, my father has not remarried. So, my redundant laws I think this makes me legitimate.
