I was looking at the politics of china on the net and just wasn't sure if they were actually communist or if the dictator just calls himself communist for attention or something...anyway, post your views.

Seeing as how it has one of the highest rates of income inequality in the world and has a large amount of institutionalized classism that keeps economic growth unevenly distributed betweem parts of the country, it's definitely not communist.

However, the state also meddles in business and treats different markets unfairly, so it's not really capitalist either. It has too much state intervention to be mixed capitalist and lacks the social infrastructure to be considered socialist.

It's really autocratic statism with capitalist elements and a degree of market pricing.

Probably the best definition of China I've heard so far. Sums it up quite nicely, yes.

China does not claim to be communist, incidentally. It doesn't even claim to be socialist (unlike Cuba and Vietnam, which officially describe themselves as socialist). A few months ago I saw an interview of a Chinese official explaining that China was not ready for socialism yet.

In Marxist theory, socialism is the intermediary step between capitalism and communism (i.e., Stateless democracy). According to this official, in order to prepare China for socialism, it was necessary to go back to the previous stage - capitalism. Which is very twisted logic, but a kind of logic I suppose... Anyway, as Vetalia pointed out, it's only partly capitalist in any case, though it's definitely not communist.

They're hardly Communist to begin with. I'd have to agree their more authoritarian and capitalistic.

Hence fascist...well I meant politically free. The freer the market, the harder it becomes to maintain absolute control.

Its Maoist. Just as USSR was Leninist (with a cherry on top from Stalin). In the recent decade, China has some areas (Shanghai for example) where they are giving capitalism a go..so called 'export processing zones', where WTO rules apply since their recent accension etc. They are trying to find their unique type of capitalism..just like japan, korea, scandinavia, Germany, etc all found their version.

For Communism Im sticking with Marx's idea that communism is a state of being that follows the logical collapse of capitalism, therefore it has yet to happen.
