More goth than emo.
He may have been the original southern Gothic. I certainly can't think of an earlier one.

I think a better word is "looney" or "insane".

I'd agree with him being more goth than emo.

Neither. A complete nutcase. :D
He was disco with a dash of heavy metal
He was talented. That places him out of the emo standard.
As far as I know, he never rhymed "rain" and "pain" together. Therefore he can't be emo or goth. In fact, Poe was a notorious medieval re-enactor and reformed alcholic. The poem originally read "Quaff the raven... nevermore."

He was emo, but his emo was justified. He had one fvcked-up life. True emo has no cause. So no.

Poe couldn't of been Emo. For his time period, he was original. Tus, he could not of been Emo.
I would describe him as a romantic writer. He was from that time period and he dealt with many of the same themes, just more morbidly.
Of course, he had his own style because the "movements" did not have the same effect in America as they did in Europe. American art and literature developed diffrently than Europe's did, on account that they were an ocean apart.

This is insane, of course he wasn’t. If you want to make this link than almost all poets, let alone classical writers could fall into the same category. Why are we even discussing this?

What in the heck is EMO?
A type of flightless bird, of course.

To the OP:
Yes. Poe lacked the obsession with being "evil" that goth's/black-metal types suffer from, and truly suffered from genuine depression and being a full blown sociopath (he was, after all, willing to marry his own cousin/sister). Emo, while perhaps totally unjustified, is the only form of music that can equate with the depression of Annabel Lee.
He slept on graves, I suppose, so there was some goth in him.
This topic makes me want to slit my wrists and listen to Dashboard Confessional, so I can be more like Poe.

Emo is a type of hardcore.
Commonly the term is used to describe a vaguely related form of indie rock/alternative/pop-punk that 14 year kids go gaga over.
He was the good kind of emo. The kind I am. The one that doesn't cut themselves for attention, but because they're addicted to it like a drug, or for punishment. The one that doesn't pretend when they bawl their eyes out. The one that actually has a miserable life. The one that actually has depression attacks. You could say he's the OG of emos.
