Exotic hand wepons

I'm pretty into primitive hand wepons that aren't well known. My favorites include the Nang-Sun from Korea. It's a 15 foot long spear with six to eight curved blades along the sides. Anyone know a cool hand wepon? (no modern-style wepons please<explosive and such>)

What exactly is so cool about an instrument designed to cause irreparable and massive bodily trauma?

Well, I'd just made a post* about two minutes before this thread appeared wherein I was lamenting how male teenagers think hand weapons are cool, and then here we go - perfect example.

If it weren't so darned predictable it would be ironic.

Well, it all depends.

This Nang-Sun would be best in the hands of an unexperienced soldier, but a kama [with a chain, and no I can't remember what chained kamas are called] would be better in the hands of a professional.

So, while the nang-sun would be best for outfitting a peasant militia [assuming any of them had the strength to lift the damn thing], a professional military troop/mercenary battalion would be able to decimate them with a chained kama.

Also, though, there is the matter of speed. A kama is a miniaturized version of a straight-handled scythe, and even with a chain attacked to the hilt is still an incredibly quick weapon.

The kama blade can deal with and easily kill any close-ranged opponents, while the chain can disarm and kill [chains were spiked or weighted, imagine a 15-pound weight being swung into your head] any opponents farther away. However, the chains themselves are powerful weapons- Most maces were around 15 pounds or less, and the same with chain weights. But there is a discrepancy- chain weights can be swung with much greater force. Also, some kamas forsake weights in favor of spiked balls. The difference is really one of personal preference, since what difference is there between caving in the head of a person standing seven feet away and putting large holes in it. Still, of course, a weighted chain was preferred by stronger people, as weights could fatally dent armor while spikes [sometimes] would bounce off, since a star pattern can't guarantee impact.

Just for history, the kama originated in Japan.

I never said I considered them unethical. Regardless, cool is subjective and its perfectly possible for someone's ideas of ethics to conflict with what they consider cool.
Primarily I said this is because ethics are decided analytically, through conscious thought, whereas "cool" is more of a feeling.
Of course, someone could base their ethics on feelings, but that would only be one case, not the general case.

Yes, used by the United States in the War of 1812.

And used by the British Empire in the course of thier conquering one quarter of the Earth.

One has to respect that accomplishment, even if the morals of the deed are questionable.

Well, the largest expansion came after 1850 really, hence it would have been the 1853 and 1864 patterns, as well as the awful 1880 series of swords.

Also used by the Prussians/Germans right up until 1916, esp. as a side arm for artiallery units during WW1.

The 1796 LC and the 1908 patterns were the best ever devised for the army, one a pure cutting sword and one pure thrusting. Virtually every other pattern post 1796 was a compromise of cut and thrust, therefore making it less than acceptable on both counts.

As for exotic,

Basket hilt sabre/hanger from mid 18th century.

Beautiful. Graceful. Accurate. Deadly (Out to 650 yards-OUCH!).

Special purpose rifle. Heavily modified M16 intended to extend the range of SOF and still share commonality with the standard issue rifles. Shootings heavier 77grain ammo so it hits harder through the turban than the normal 55 and 62 grain stuff.

Actually its natural for any male human to be interested in that kind of stuff. It's just what we do. I know this is a stereotype: but you women are generally interested in softer things like fashion, beauty, etc. while men are into sports, guns, etc. Dont get me wrong, it's perfectly fine for each gender to cross borders into other interests.

What the hell did you think a rifle with a bayonet was? :p

Me, I like Naginatas, but only because they're the closest I get to a double-bladed staff. All they need is an opposing blade on the other end, and a slightly longer shaft to compensate, and I've got my perfect weapon.

And for those who dislike weapon fetishism or whatever you want to call it: just don't read the thread. Really. There's lots on NationStates. :)

Well, well, well...this is a topic I can sink my teeth into.

I'm a personal fan of Sap defender gloves. http://www.blade-empire.com/Hatch/Defender_Gloves-Steel_Shot-Large.shtml

A cat-o-nine-tails is another good one, but, it's a whip, so it suffers from the problem of having to make almost wild movements to inflict serious damage sometimes. Another personal winner has to be a scimitar, a middle easter curved sword along the line of the sabers, used by europen warriors.

But, if I had the chance, I would sell my soul for Lu Bu's weapon, Sky Scorcher. He was a beast with that thing. A Trident Halberd, if only.

Good point, my hands are far too awesome to be degraded in such a way. I'll have to find a servant to do it for me, or I could mind-propel it with telekinetic rays of awesomeness. That would rule it out being a hand weapon, no?

Perhaps I could use somebody else's hands as a weapon; that'd be pretty cool. And gross. Can I borrow yours?

What kind of scimitar though? You've got shamshirs, kilij and saif etc etc. Even tulwars are of the same family. The word 'scimitar' is just a anglecised version of the word 'Shamshir' AFAIK.

Still, they're bloody nice swords...both are pattern welded blades afaik.
