Autonomist and secessionist movements

What are your thoughts on autonomist and secessionist movements?

Are there any places you would like to see become independent? Or are there places you think that need to merge together?

Maybe I need to include a poll, or start a thread whose title contains shorter words.

I fully support any autonomist or secessionist movement that is supported by the people of the unit that wants to secede.

There aren't any places that I particularly want to secede from somewhere else, mainly as it isn't my call. If Quebéc or the Basque country, California, or even the Upper Peninsula of Michigan were to seperate from whatever they are a part of I'd support them fully. I believe that self government is a vital part of liberty.

Make Miami an independent nation for the Cubans and other hispanics who live there, LOL, I would love that.

You already have a country. It's called Cuba. If you or the other Hispanics want nations of your own, return to your countries of origin.

Anyway, I would generally be supportive of the right to self-determination.

Depends on whether or not they have an actual valid reason.

Aztlan/Reconquista? Negative. Bunch of racists.

Katangan seperatists? Yes, they had a Valid reason for wanting secession from the mainland. However the UN and the northern tribes burtally forced them back into it.

Hey, if a sufficient number of people want to secede, and can viably do so economically, better that they do, whatever the motivation. It's preferable to forcing people to live together.

When we consider that the vast majority of national borders outside of Europe are entirely contrived, with homogenous ethnic groups split between many different states and a single state containing ethnic groups that have been traditional enemies, it becomes completely evident that many of the current national boundary lines have no ethical basis, and as such should be completely redrawn.

*shrug*
Why is an ethical basis necessary?

Borders simply are.
Accept them - or be a VMT.

An ethical basis is necessary for everything that tells people what to do, because eventually someone is going to challenge them and if no-one can come up with any decent justification, then they will fall, much like the border between East and West Germany fell.

Also, what is a VMT?

My ancestors fought for Ohio. At least they had the good sense to move to Michigan in the 1880's.

I think a lot of the reason no one jumped in on the side of the South was the perceived US victory at Antietam and the Emancipation Declaration that followed shortly thereafter.

Mine fought on the side of the confederacy. Texas was a 'slave' state from the time of it's adoption to the ending of the civil war.

I want to have my great state of Illinois to secede from the Union, with free access to travel on the rivers and the great lakes. Also, I want Illinois to invade Iowa, and also Wisconsin. We can use those people for slave labor :D
