My super sweet sixteen, social commentary/social vomit

I have spent most of the last two weeks sitting at home and channel surfing so as a consequence i have caught dozens of promos and sizeable chunks of this show on MTV, my super sweet sixteen, and everytime i catch a scene or two, i become extremely nauseous and otherwise ill.

THIS SHOW IS F***** DISGUSTING!! The little girls (and occasionally guys) on it, if it were up to me, would not be allowed to live!! They are proof that maybe some people do not deserve life! These people who are "celebrating" their birthdays are not contributors to human society, they are bloated cancers on the face of the earth, tumors which require immediately to be destroyed. As I watch these little bitches trapse about buying EVERYTHING in duplicate and gold plated I get a sinking feeling that my generation (im nineteen, so these people are essentially my peers) is screwed beyond all recognition.

They have no sense of reality or the outside world, when i was sixteen (scarcely three years ago) i would not have dreampt of dropping (or forcing my daddy to drop) a hundred grand on a PARTY for me, if we had that kind of money id rather have seen it donated to a charity than see it wasted on treating a bunch of socialite assclowns to a night of inane debauchery and mind numbing chatter. They sit there saying "I wonder if i can get green day to play my party..." Uggh. is this what our culture has come to?

I am no sexist, and im pretty flippin liberal, but the females on this show make me wonder about the womens movement and whether or not it was for nought, because they seem to be sending the message that to be a female in america today means to be shallow, vindictive, elitist, slutty, self deluded, arrogant, bitchy, vain and otherwise lacksadaisically selfish, blind and ignorant. This is why i have respect for so few women, so many are so ingenuine (like the whores on my super sweet sixteen) My best friend is a girl named Amber and Ive known her for twelve years, and she shares my sentiments, I AM NO SEXIST. Just a concerned and rational person.

Which brings me to my other point about the show, there was one episode where the person who was celebrating the sixteenth birthday was a guy, an obviously GAY guy, and his episode portrayed gay culture in the same light as female culture, shallow, vindictive, elitist, slutty, self deluded and socially UNAWARE of everything going on around them in the world. AS A MEMBER OF THE GLBT (im a B) COMMUNITY THIS DEEPLY OFFENDS ME along with will and grace and queer eye for the straight guy, my super sweet sixteen partakes in the portrayal of queer culture as all of the above negative adjectives. Basically, to be a queer person on tv, you have to embody what a "blond" stereotype is.

well...thats it i guess, discuss, flame etc to your hearts content

Interesting. Never took the show from a feminist perspective before, but you make an interesting case.

That and the show is pap, but there you go.

I've never seen the the show, and I doubt I would like it even without what you have said. But I don't really think that this ought to be a surprise. The vast majority of persons in the world are shallow and vain and arrogant and ignorant and insert negative personality trait here. And a station (which to me has always appeared to glorify these traits anyway) would show a show like this is the natural thing to do: pander to the public.

Does that make it right? No, but you can't really change it without changing society. And if you are offended by the show, try to change it. Tell others to stop watching it: if no one watches it, they won't show it. If it's bothering you enough and if you have enough resolve and enough funds, fight it: write MTV, write a book about it, or whatever.

I guess im talking about larger trends and using this show as a springboard to discuss them. I suppose I am just maturing, but i used to love hanging out at the mall and i went back the other day to get a pair of pants and i realized that I hated it, i went into all the shops and realized how stupid, inane, shallow, and deluded everyone there was. I just watched the mallrats walking about and felt the hate just rise in me, i felt like screaming at them, saying that they are wasting their lives on utter bullcrap. And to get back on the gender differences, it seems that there are a lot more genuine males than genuine females. I go to a rock show (punk, metal, hardcore, whatever) and for one thing, there are a lot more males there, and of the females there, it is painfully obvious that they like the band because of the fashion entailed in the scene, or the cuteness of the members, its insanely difficult to meet a girl who is not shallow and ignorant. I can guarantee that none of my female cousins could identify england on a map, but they could tell me the life story of Jay Z or justin timberlake. I mean, look at the magazines geared toward women and girls, j 14, cosmopolitan, all of that crap, it is vain and superficial. They are telling our women that to be beautiful is to be stupid. A woman today can better identify a HANDBAG than the chancellor of Germany (a woman, incidentally)

Have you read Catcher in the Rye? I hated it (too much profanity for my tastes), but it kinda talks about what you're going through. I'm at the end of my phase of disillusionment. There were times when I wanted to kill certain persons (really kill them) because of their shallow, fake lifestyles and façades.

Just try to stay calm and remember that we are all sinful humans. Some are less sinful than others, but we are all horrible. I went through a period where I confronted one of my vices, so I was able to see my own shortcomings and was able to be more understanding of others. Just pray for help and try to be kind. I know it's hard. I can't wait to get of high school and go to college where I'll have a little larger selection of intelligent persons. But I'm stuck for 5 1/2 more days. So I have to suffer through the frustration.

I guess my advice is to pray.

They all have high school diplomas! so public education is bunk, utter crap. I was playing pictionary with my aunt and cousin desiree and some others on new years eve and i was thoroughly drunk and a bit stoned, and the clue was canada and i drew a very detailed map of the western hemisphere and they couldnt identify canada, I even outlined New Mexico so they could have a reference point and nothing, and after the timer went off i screamed at them for like five minutes, here it is as best as i could remember it

"you both have f***** high school diplomas and you DONT KNOW WHERE CANADA IS...how exactly does one go through forty years and twenty years of life (respectively) and not, oh i dont know, incidentally pick up where Canada is in relation to the USA!!"

they got pissed, stormed off and said "well...not everyone can be as smart as you mark"...to which i said that yes, everyone can be if they would just give two flying craps.

That was the night i lost faith in public eduation. Though i went through it, I had the extra motivation of wonderful teachers and wonderful involved parents who instilled a love of learning in me early on, a love so few share today. I went through public school but i learned all that i know IN SPITE of it, not because of it.

There are people who can't find the US on a map. You ask entirely too much of people, expecting them to know basic facts.

Thats what I've determined most TV to be. Of very little redeeming value at all. As kids were taught that the world is good and that there are always happy endings. Every girl is a princess and every boy a prince. As we grow older we realize how untrue that is. Some of us grow up from childhood delusions and somem of us never seem to leave being a kid behind.

Personally I hate all reality TV. If i wanted rreality I'd get off my ass and go outside or someting. All it does is show the worst in people and try and make us belvie all the negative sterotypes.

There's a difference between schooling and education.

All the US schooling system wants to know is if the school is presenting the material. They don't really care if the student is learning the material or what material the student is learning. So I wouldn't rely too much on a high school diploma.

I've studied maps since I could read, so I know the locations of nearly everything you can see on a world map. But others in my World Cultures class nearly failed because they had trouble identifying China. The problem is that the don't see the need to know, nor do they have the desire to know. So you need to show the need and instill the desire. Yelling won't help do that.

It's hard not to I yell all the time (Especially at church, the place I ought not to yell at all). But all we do when we yell is to turn them against us. And by association our ideas and our values, even if they weren't created by us, are hated also. So try not to yell. :)

My aunt is an administrative assistant at the kirtland air force base and my cousin "just finished college" if you could call the apollo school of semi skilled pseudo careerology a college, so shes going to be a medical assistant, basically, the underlings to the underlings to the nurses at a hospital.

Thats another thing, these colleges with the certifications in massage or medical assistants or whatever, theyre a joke. What they are is the power elite in america finding a way to channel the energy of the poor masses who want to go to college into a psuedo college which appeals to their desire to hurry up and get on with life, so the rich create these schools where someone pays 10 k for one year of limited instruction on one subject so that they can make decent money (lower middle class) and the rich arent threatened by more college educated poor people. The commercials even say it, "i wanted to get an education but i didnt want to waste my time with a four year college" because god forbid, you'd actually get an EDUCATION there. Which is precisely what the rich dont want.

Here in Turkiye one MIT(the turkish Cia) high ranking official, I believe it was highest secretary said that too, that TV today makes one want to become communist.
The man who said that is an cold war artifact(old, rich, powerful and probably will be informed in the morning that someone spoke about him in this forum :p) who probably hated communism his entire life and closely worked with america.

I dont believe in any democracy allowing such shit. When people are dying of hunger no one can have those crap as rights. Having the brain capacity of a turnip is unexcusable and such creatures should be extinct for the sake of humanity. They are worthless even as cannon fodder.

Just look at it this way: We tax the hell out of them to pay for the services we enjoy, and their irresponsibility pays the salaries of everyday people with lives much more enriching than theirs.

I'd rather have a moderate income(you know, enough to not worry about paying the bills and enough to indulge myself every so often) and be happy with myself than to be trapped in a miserable life of conspicuous consumption and social politics...after all, it seems that the wealthy have the most personal and mental problems.

My advice is to turn off the TV and go do something you enjoy...what sense is it to get angry about the inanity of irrelevant people?

Every time MTV creates a show like this they should be fined $400 thousand dollars. Per episode.

Not everyone is in a situation where they can go to college for four years, be it to a state university or a private university. Some go to trade schools to get trained in craftswork or as a mechanic, which I am told is a very satisfying, and usually rewarding, career. Sometimes I have to wonder if i'd be more happy doing wood working for most of my life than as a finance major.

*snipped for length*
Here's the thing.

I watched that show with a friend of mine the other day, and I got the distinct impression that the entire point of the show is to evoke feelings of disgust in the viewer. You're supposed to think the kid is a spoilt punk. You're supposed to be amazed at how pathetic the parents are. You're supposed to be horrified at the wasteful, disgusting display of general douchebaggery that is going on. The kids are shown as ignorant, selfish, mean-spirited brats, and the parents as complete chumps.

When viewed in that light, I really like the program. It shows how the stereotypical little-girl-as-princess culture is pathetic and disgusting. It shows how fathers' obsessions with Daddy's Little Girl are deeply unhealthy. It shows how excessive materialism can totally fuck up a child.

But I agree that it is vomit-inducing to watch these kids blowing $300,000 on a birthday party, when there are 2 million children in America who don't have enough to eat right now.

Some people just think its all about them. Its just good to know they wont get anywhere in life on their own.

They don't need to get anywhere on their own, because they have daddy's money backing them up. They can get away with never working a day in their lives and just cruising from one party to the next. And you think this is a punishment?

What I meant was, once those parents are gone and they have to tread life solo, they will fail. Its good to notice this.

*agrees with OP*

And now on to something slightly different: 'Made', 'Roomraiders' and 'Date my Mom' equally piss me off, as they only promote mainstream - you´ve got a "weird" mom, so you must be a freak, byebye. Your room is not utterly average or even has some strange stuff in it - you must be a freak, byebye. You want to become part of the flock? Apply for 'Made' and be streamlined.
