This may have been discussed at some point on here, but I was amused reading this article with all the scaremongering going on about Iran.

If they really want a nuke power plant that badly, then I say we give it to them, along with a permanent garrison or three.

Iran is trying to be cool.

America is not because for some reason we want another botched war.

Im not surprised.

And nobody thinks it odd that the "most conservative ayatollah" in Iran's already conservative government suddenly wants to have a nice chat with the leader of the country Iran considers patently evil?

People don't change their viewpoints overnight, and conservative religious governments don't keep their power by randomly changing the great enemies overnight.

Hell even if this is all some conspiracy of Iran to stall for time or something they are still asking to talk which hasn't happened for a long time. Bush would have to be a moron (what am I saying? ) to turn this down. Then again he has dug himself deep in saying Iran is such a threat so turning around and saying they may want to discuss the situation wouldn't look good for him.

I say we should give them a softwater reactor (can't build nukes using those) and listen to the letter(s) the Iranian president sent...sure, they hate America, but so did the Soviets and Chinese, and we got along just fine when our president went to visit them in the first Cold War.

He does, but the Iranians wont speak english. How are you supposed to talk to someone when they dont talk back? Its a sign they are going to attack us, so I say we get em 1st while we still can!

We simply have to talk to them. The fact that they are willing is a good sign. I'm not saying we bow to them and agree to them getting nukes, but anything to keep them from getting them is worth it.

Two good news items in teh same day. Iran wants to talk and Skilling and Lay get convicted. Maybe we wont all die, afterall. :)

Are you being dense on purpose? Iran has been sending messages to Bush and his people are waving it off as if it means nothing. Clearly he doesn't want to back down from his position of Iran being a threat when it really isn't.

Am I the only one who things hes just talking tough to Iran to mask his troop problems in southern Iraq?

how the hell is he going to get the largest faction of the new Iraqi government on board (the shiite sciri) if he invades Iran?

The real target of the invasion is the sunni, why would Iran want to mess that up?

Maybe if they sent them in english we would answer them? Its our national language now you know, after last week. How do you know they arent a threat? Maybe the Russian gave them 20 nuclear missiles that they will launch on us tommorrow, you just dont know. We shouldnt wait for the "facts" or "dipolmacy" to work to take action!

Liasia']Iran isn't.
Actually, they are.

Speaking exclusively to Aljazeera, Simmons came out with a statement that, if proven true over time, could herald by far the biggest energy crisis mankind has known.

"If Saudi Arabia have damaged their fields, accidentally or not, by overproducing them, then we may have already passed peak oil. Iran has certainly peaked, there is no way on Earth they can ever get back to their production of six million barrels per day (mbpd)."
http://english.aljazeera.net/NR/exeres/80C89E7E-1DE9-42BC-920B-91E5850FB067.htm

They peaked at 6 million barrels/day in 1974. They have never gotten their production back to those levels and no one believes they can.

Well, unless the current regime were to disappear and the oil infrastructure were to magically avoid any damage or shutdowns as a result of the regime change it is pretty much impossible. Iran's problems seem much more politically and economically motivated than any geological issues.

I guess it could be a good thing, though. The areas that aren't explored or producing are pretty much in reserve, and artificial disruptions in supply are much more desirable than geologically inflicted ones. The same is true of Iraq as well...it's better for oil producers to coordinate their output to manage reserves than to have a repeat of the 1990's overproduction.

No it's geologic. There's no reason to believe that they are going to find enough oil in any unexplored territory to make a difference. They found Azziz and that's in decline. They're not going to find another one.

Maybe someone gave them a superweapon to blow us all up but I don't think in outlandish "theories." Give me PROOF. There is absolutely no proof that they are anywhere close to developing nuclear weapons. Just the usual Bush scaremonering, he knows it is easy to terrify the American people with stuff like this and this offer of the Iranians takes the wind of of Bush's sails. Negotiation is possible now, lets act like we are a leader in the world and try to accomplish something. We act in good faith and if Iran tries anything then they are the ones who will suffer in the eyes of the world.
