Where should Olympic games be held?

New Zero Seven

if money weren't an issue, which city/country do you think is deserving of holding an Olympic game (either winter or summer)?

I say Toronto. I know I sound a bit biased since I'm kinda from there... but I say Toronto because this city has so much to offer. for the most part, the people are great, the politicians aren't too shabby (I thought Mayor Lastman was pretty awesome), and the city is just so diverse... its like having neighbourhoods that are their own nations... its pretty crazy.

yes we do have problems much like any other city, Toronto suffers from a growing youth/gun violence issue, but if you looked beyond that, if we looked at the courage and the aspirations, the hope of Torontonians, I think Toronto deserves to showcase itself to the world and host an Olympic game, notably a summer one. perhaps we'll see a Toronto 2020?

as well I'd like Africa and South America to host one, preferably in either Johannesburg or Cape Town, South Africa; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; or in Guyana.

what other cities in this world do you think should host the Olympic games?

Not Rio, no way.

If you wanted to hold the olympics in Brazil, I would vote for it to be held in Curitiba (http://www.uoregon.edu/~sergiok/brasil/curitiba.html). (I don't live there by the way). Neither Rio nor São Paulo could cope with organising it. They have too many problems of their own to deal with.

forests are always good. I want to visit BC, I've never been there... hell, I've never been anywhere outside the greater Toronto area... not even to Ottawa... I'm deprived, yes I know... :p

but yes, BC is reknowned for its natural beauty, its definitely on my must-visit list.

So you don't want the government to build more public amenitys. That's a complete waste of money, isn't it? The people of London don't need swimming pools and sports stadiums, they should all be closed down. Think of the children, they'll be encouraged to waste their time doing pointless activities instead of sitting at home watching television. Health and fitness is so overrated. And what of all the money spent on improving London in preparation for the games? You londoners are so unlucky, I'd hate for that to happen to my city. As for the tourists, heaven forbid that they should come to our country and spend their precious money here.

yeah, I second that. I don't think Beijing should have won teh games for 2008. China's gov't is corrupt, horrid human rights abusers, and their city is filthy. I still don't understand how and why the IOC selected them over other better candidates.

if anything, the Chinese will use 2008 as a platform for their communist regime, much like Berlin in 1936 with Hitler. quite sad...

But seriously, how well did that work out for him? He wanted to show off the "arian" races leet skills, but then Jesse Owens came along... And aren't the chinese saying they'll take more gold medals than any other nation ever has? Same thing might happen to them...

Hitler was just insane, period.

yeah, you can't trust their gov't. the Beijing games will be very political, the Chinese will boo Japanese athletes and the Japanese national anthem when its played from past experiences, Beijing will be even more crowded from the athletes/visitors, I dunno... it'll just be pure chaos from the sounds of it.

but we'll see how it works out in the end...

There's still some of that temperate rainforest on the mainland.

Victoria did do a good job with the Commonwealth games not too long ago (though, so did Edmonton back in 1978), but it's a very small city to host to Olympics. There wouldn't be enough hotel space.

Frankly, I think Vancouver's Olympics are going to be a disaster. That speedskating oval is a microcosm of the whole event.

They're building the oval on a river delta in an extremely active seismic zone. So, as about 2m above sea level, this will be the lowest speedskating oval ever, and thicker air means slower skaters. Plus, the humidity (not only is the oval right next to the ocean, but the Olympics are being held during the rainy season) will make the ice frosty, and thus slower still. This will be the slowest ice ever made. Add to that the unstable ground beneath it, and any seismic activity between now and 2010 will tilt the oval beyond the limits of the regulations and render the oval substandard, and they'll have to relocate the events to Calgary (that's the backup plan). Just a little tremor will do it. A major earthquake would cause widespread liquefaction of the area, causing the oval to sink.

The whole of the Olympics are being planned about that well.

I want to see the winter Olympics in Salzburg.

If we get the politics out of the way (say, by an Israeli-Palestinian peace treaty), Tel-Aviv could host a great Olympics. I mean, they already host the Maccabi Games (Israeli Olympics) every year. All they would need to do is expand the Maccabi facilities.
Not to mention the best security around.

I would argue against Toronto, becuase I think it is too big. For me the Olympics should be in a smaller spot where the games can really put a place on the map, and also really enthrall the locals. Obviously a town has to be a certain size of course, to pull it off.

To go local, I say Halifax.

That's very interesting. I've been studying New Zealand society and identity (for my doctoral thesis), and the image it has at home and abroad. The whole "beautiful landscapes" thing, purity of the healthy rural air, Pakeha society founded (partly) on the idea of getting away from dirty, overcrowded, industrialised Victorian cities... It seems that image is still very much alive in the eyes of non-New Zealanders too, despite New Zealand being one of the most highly urbanised countries in the world (86% in 2001).

Once you leave Auckland and the North Island, its a totally different story. I've actually visited NZ 2 years ago, and believe me, the "urbanization" there does not even begin to compare to the US, Europe, or Asia.
