Apparently, three weeks ago, a laptop and external hardrive containing the names and social security numbers of over 26 million U.S. Veterans was stolen and never recovered. Be on extra guard from identity thefts.

And don't worry, Eutrusca. We all already know your social security number: 1. :D

Too bad the governent isn't as good at protecting my identity as they are at protecting me from sharp objects at the airport. Oh wait, they aren't much good at that either.

At least they can protect you from illegal drugs. ...Okay, scratch that one too. :p

There is an advantage to having a poor credit rating, no one wants to steal your identity.

Not worried about it myself. I check my credit on a regular basis to combat this kind of thing.

Think about this ... In the day of databases and data servers, why would anyone need to have data records for 25 million people stored on a laptop. That's what Oracle and Access and other programs do so well, they keep data centralized.

This isn't necessarily the idiot employee's fault, it's more the fault of the VA for making this sort of thing possible.

On the other hand, it does look pretty sinister that a single employee would want to store that much data on his computer and then take it home.
