Does anyone have a favorite place to go sit down and have a brew?
My personal favorite (although I havent been to too many places yet is the Six Pence Pub in savannah. Didnt go to many in philly, but i believe i was at the greys lodge which is on the list here.

has anyone here? ever been to any of the ones listed here? or knows one that should have made the list, etc.

This list here only pertains to the US, but i'd like to know of any great places across the seas in case i feel the need to vacation someday.

to beer! *raises glass*

The best place for a beer is in my hand. :D

The only bar on that list I've been to is the Toronado in San Francisco, and it is a hell of a beer place, that is true. Once a year they do a Barley Wine week, where all they serve is Barley Wine--basically high alcohol content beer. Talk about getting hammered quick. Whew!

Never been to the US as an adult so here my top five for Europe;

5 - Rex Cafe, Florence, Italy - Fantastic nightime cafe with brilliant music and very talented cocktail mixing barstaff

4 - The Temple Bar, Dublin, Ireland - The centre of Dublin nightlife

3 - The Pegasus, Aldershot, England - Pub adopted by the Parachute Regiment of the British Army. Very entertaining as long as you stay out of any arguments.

2 - Emiles, Calvi, Corsica - Fantsastic bar with excellent beer

1 - The Ship Centurion, Whitstable, England (currently my local hangout) - the only English pub I know with a German landlord! Not only does a great range of top English ales, also offers two quality German lagers (Bitburger and Erdinger) and an "interesting" range of German schnapps.

I've had it here--there's a local joint called Old Heidelberg that's more restaurant than bar (they make their own sausage next door), complete with an old guy playing accordion and singing. It's uber-cheesy, and the food and beer is delicious.

49 out of a gazillion? I'd say that makes it a pretty special place.

Guess I need to have a beer in Decatur. That's close enough to find out what's so special.

But I'm with Nazz, here, the best place for a beer _is_ in my hand. A beer on ice within arm's reach takes second place.

I've seen it in the UK before bottled, but this is the only place I know that does it on tap. Its a Weisbier, meaning its made using wheat instead of barley.

EDIT - The landlord's name is Armin, apparently he was named after his father's U-Boat - The Arminius. The front of the pub flies the Union flag, the cross of St George and the German republican flag. He's a real larger than life character in the town.

Here are my favourite spots:

5. Mike's Place - Ottawa - Named for Lester B. Pearson, Canada's diplomat Prime Minister, this is the graduate pub at Carleton University. This past school year if you had gone there on a Tuesday night you would have caught me lighting up the place with my super karaoke skills. It is the local hangout for my friends and I, which is how it gets onto this list. The beer selection is unfortunately limited; however they do serve Keith's and Moosehead, which remind me of my old hometown...

4. The Seahorse - Halifax - An ancient bar, this place was open when my grandparents were my age. It is dark and dingy, with giant Seahoreses that have glowing red eyes; and serves a strong, dark house beer called Horsepower that is not to be missed.

3. Pub Italia - Ottawa - Like a beer museum with interactive exhibits, this popular spot can serve you just about any beer you want due to its colossal stock. Other than being in Little Italy it has nothing Italian about it. There is some Irish influence, though.

2. Chez Lucien - Ottawa - This cozy French pub has a free jukebox, famous food, and serves St. Ambroise.

1. Tribeca - Halifax - One can never go wrong in Halifax, and Tribeca is the hottest of the hot. It sports the grooviest decor I've ever seen, and serves my favourite microbrew, Griffon, to boot.

I don't think where is important, I think when is. A beer is mediocre if you're just drinking it on a whim. These are my favourite times to enjoy a chilled beer:

1. After particularly tiring labour - ie, after a jog, after the gym.
2. On a really hot day, but ONLY at the point where you're dying of thirst.
3. With a feast (mediteranean food only!) - tapas/meze.
4. Any time where the coolness of the beer is exaggerated - in other words, any time where it's hot, or you're hot.
5. With curry.

1- The Ship Centurion - Have you tried the one on the beach (actually that might be the ship?) or how about the Man of Kent on the canterbury road?

*pedantic hat on* bitburger is actually non-alcoholic (which disqualifies it as a beer in my eyes) and I've got a sneaking suspicion that erdinger is brewed by Shepherd Neame... in Kent *hat off*

If you are going to come all the way to Brazil, at least try to avoid the tourist traps huh.

Ipanema is pretty, but vastly overrated and way too expensive.

If you want huts on a beach in a decent sized city, try João Pessoa. (http://www.brasilbeleza.com/page-photos-joao-pessoa.html) (sorry that the page is in French, but the photos aren't)

Like I said, at the Pegasus try to stay out of the way. I went there with a bunch of Royal marines.............the bruises are still healing............

The pub on the beach is called the Neptune Arms. They have great bands playing sometimes and its a nice pub to drink in during the summer. The Man of Kent closed down about 4 or 5 years ago.

*Puts his own pedantic hat on* Bitburger is most definitely not non-alcoholic. As far as I am aware it is in fact Germany's top selling draught lager. Is Erdinger brewed by Shgepherd Neame? I don't honestly know, but I would guress not on the basis that nearly all the pubs round here are Shepherd Neame pubs and I've never seen it on tap anywhere else.*hat off as well*

Red Lion and Pineapple in Acton.

A typically Weatherspoons pub, taking a veneer of classical style combined with good value food and what I've heard described as a truly awesome selection of beers.

And, glory of glories, it's quiet enough to have a conversation but not so silent as to be scary. Oh, and usually they have some charming barmaids.

And, sorry, Anchor Steam?
Made by Anchor Brewing in San Francisco. You may find beers that are its equal, but you won't find one better.

Ayinger Brewery -- Aying, Germany

Flying Pig Brewery -- Everett, WA
Scuttlebutt Brewery -- Everett, WA
Red Hook Brewery -- Seattle, WA
Full Sail Brewery -- Hood River, OR
Hoppy Brewpub -- Sacramento, CA
Rubicon Brewery -- Sacramento, CA
Sudwerk Brewpub -- Davis, CA
Pike Place Brewery -- Seattle, WA
Hale's Ales -- Kirkland, WA
Quay Street Brewery -- Port Huron, MI
The Yard House -- Long Beach, CA
Boulevard Brewery -- Kansas City, MO
Big Rock Brewery -- Banff, AB, Canada
Rivertown Alehouse -- Snohomish, WA (only place I've ever been able to get the delightful German Schwarzbier called Kostrizer)
Diamond Knot Brewery -- Mulikteo, WA
Grant's Brewpub -- Yakima, WA (some of the best cider you'll ever have, too)
Skagit Brewery -- Mt. Vernon, WA
Sierra Nevada -- Chico, CA
Roslyn Brewery -- Roslyn, WA (former home of the TV show Northern Exposure and the incomparable Village Pizza...mmmm)

Just to name a few...God I miss good beer.

EDIT: You can like Pennsylvania all you want, but without the Pacific Northwest, as with coffee (which I don't like), your microbrew craze wouldn't have happened. In fact, one of the breweries that started the boom of the 80s is now, sadly, relegated to brewing sodas because they're so good at it, the sodas outprofited the beer (Thomas Kemper). There's ONE pub here in Bismarck, The Walrus, that puts the occasional Seattle micro on tap, and it's been my beer saving grace. But when I think about all the Northwest micros -- Redhook, Hale's, Pike Place, Full Sail, Widmer, Pyramid, McMenamin's, Portland Brewing, Elysium, Rogue (famous for Dead Guy Ale), Smith Street, Grant's, and many more -- I can't help but pride myself at being a Pacific Northwest native when it comes to beer.

Spoons can't keep beer worth shit.

In Leeds there are too many good places to mention.
The Angel springs to mind, as does Arcadia. Good beers, and God the Angel's cheap.

Wetherspoons are to pubs what McDonalds is to restaurants.

There's a chain like that out west called Rock Bottom Brewery. Far to pretentious and upscale to be enjoyable by anyone without a stock portfolio (i.e., me). It doesn't fully suck, but you pay far too much for what truly excellent brewpubs do far better for far less.

I'll give them this: they do, on occasion manage to keep some of the character of the building they took over. The Union Rooms in Newcastle still has its tiled bar, for one. Unlike 'Scream' they truly do suck.
