Allow me to begin with the story.

I work sundays at an inner-Sydney hat shop. It is a curious place to work, and I enjoy the 'quirky' salesmanship required of a days work there. Anyway, last Sunday, it was rather quiet when a large family of adults enter the store. A bit of small talk revealed they were visiting Sydney from Newcastle (something like New Jersey to New York, for you seppos).

All was going well until one of the daughters in her early 20's started trying on some of the more outlandish hats we own, sampling a sailors hat, a captains hat, a greek fishermans hat, a fez, and then a malaysian kufi (a poor/humble south-east asian muslim cap). Noting the humour she drew from the fez and the kufi, and presented the 'President Suharto' hat (to this day, I don't know the correct term, but even if I did I would have to end up citing president Suharto to explain it to customers). This hat frequently sources mirth and tickles the sense of novelty of customers, especially because of the celebrity factor. The hat itself is frequently worn by wealthy and powerful south-east asian muslims. So anyway, upon producing the hat, the elderly mother of the group had a fit, asking me how I dared suggest such a thing to a jew!

I paused for a moment as my brain reeled with thousands crippling comebacks in response to the several faults of logic and reason in her attack. Then I had to pause a moment longer to stifle the frshly concocted onslaught of argumentative brilliance, seeing as she was the customer, and as such was likely to give me money. Then, after all of that, I decided that seeing as the boss isn't in on Sundays, I may as well let loose. I basically asked her why an Australian jew would give two shits about South-east-asian Islamic apparel. Especially seeing as of the two religions, it is Islam that faces oppression at the hands of Judaism. She mentioned something about never coming again and stormed of with her family with a "hmph!".

I mean WTF?! Talk about undue self-victimisation. I am sick to shit of this bitch-parade. I mean she wasn't even upset (as demonstrated by her non-reaction to her daughters tryingon other muslim hats), she just wanted to bully a goyim into pitying her. I don't take that kinda shit from anyone, be it about religion, feelings, politics or whatever. If you have a problem, lay it on the table for examination. Don't even think that you can guilt-trip me into passive acknowledgement of your psuedo-victim-status. It's not the first time either. I once had an old Jewish ladie argue that there should be affirmative action for jews, IN AUSTRALIA?!!?! Oy! What a putz!

Does anyone else see this as unreasonable? Jews being offended by the concept of Islam? Australians being offended by Indonesians because of an abstract link between the two parties with two others in a region known as the middle-east, on the opposite side of the world? Jew incessantly and forcibly portraying themselves as the victims of the world?

I know! I happened to be in the city on the same night that 'The Davinci Code' premiered. There was this huge mob of Catholics protesting across the road from the George street cinema complex. An extremely push fellow then tried to get me to sign a petition to put a bishop in some kind of censorship position (non-existant one, as of yet). Further more, there were the new-age christians handing out flyers all over the place, and oddly enough, the Hare Krishnas were doing a huge dance amongst the lot of them. It was like god's rave party.

Aren't you catholic (just the name, is all)?

Uh, Jews and Muslims oppress each other. Neither has a monopoly.

It's just another, more personal example of the Persecution Carte Blanche Complex that a lot of Kahanists and even some Jews suffer from.

The way they use the Holocaust and historical Jewish persecution as a Get Out of Jail Free card for their behaviors almost borders on an attitude of entitlement as if they were the only group of human beings to have been persecuted in the entire world.

It reminds me of The Simpsons where Homer joins the local gun owners' association and starts using a revolver for everything from turning on the TV, to opening a can of beer.

It is true that members of the Jewish religion suffered because of it far more frequently, by proportion, than many other religions. However, was that woman oppressed by the Nazi Party? Has she specifically been told that she will be driven into the sea? Seems unlikely. Australia's been pretty good about stuff like that (the whole Aborigines thing notwithstanding). If Sinn Fein used the Famine as an excuse to attack England, would that be acceptable? No. There are Jews today who have been and are being persecuted. For many it really is through no fault of their own (Israel is a bit different... shell peoples villages and take away their water sources, and you shouldn't be suprised if they get a mite peeved). But there are black people, Irish, Poles, English, Americans, Chinese, whatever people being oppressed for various reasons. Doesn't give an excuse to the rest of their group...

Now I carefully read your story, but I failed to see what exactly you said to her in the first place that she took offense too. I can understand if she took offense from the hat if you suggested she put it on. And your comment after she was offended was immature at best. Suck it up and remember "the customer is always right".

When? Perhaps 500 years ago. In the modern era, jews are frequently the targets of terrorist cells. Terrorist cells from oppressed palestine. Hopeless little kicks and slaps from an pathetic nerd state, whilst Israel flushes it's head down the economic dunny. In any case, I would hardly call terrorist attacks oppression. It's not like the systematic government dickery imposed upon Isreali-palestinians and muslims. Last week I read they went in and bulldozed 300+ muslim peoples homes for a developement of some sort. IMO Israel (the country) deserves anything it gets or will get in the near future. Jews however, are just people like the rest of us, and cannot be collectively blamed for anything. However, being jews, they seem inclined to wave the problems of Isreal as their own, and petioneer sympathy for it. They just wont get it from me. I have a feeling that a lot of the younger generation feels this way. Unfortunately for the tenure of the state of Israel, their government hasn't put a lot of time/money into making friends with the people who want to destroy them, so they are rooted. But, yeah, the point I seemed to have misplaced is that Israel does not win any sympathy for being oppressed by muslims. The idea is crazy! I bet the palestinians dream of oppressing Israelis, but it isn't going to happen for some time, if ever. Should Israel fall I would expect most of the Israelis would take off back to the places they were from before the invention of their state. Those that remained, yese, they would be oppressed for sure.

Exactly. There are thousands more chinese in Australia than Jews and not once have I ever heard one of them bitch about oppression (relevant or not).

I didn't even suggest it to her, I suggested it to her daughter. The very same daughter who was wearing a kufi at the time. That is what she took offence to., I don't see how my post-confrontational comment was immature. F$ck the customer always being right, she was wrong.
