Plastic Perfection

What do you think of (elective) plastic surgery for purely cosmetic purposes?
Have you or would you ever consider it?

I sometimes think my nose would look better if it was a bit smaller, but even if I could afford it, I'm not sure I would go through with it.

If I weren't opposed to sumptuary laws in principle, I would advocate a Law punishing any form of cosmetic surgery, including piercing and tattoos, with 20 years of porridge.

Excess to penalise Excess!
Consider it poetic justice - I thoroughly hate ostentatiousness.
( And I'd say it is secular blasphemy in a world that STILL has severe poverty-problems. )

It's not for me as I am actually the plutonic solid ideal of beauty, but if other people want it I suppose it is up to them. I would just ban/regulate dangerous procedures and perhaps put a tax on it and have the money given to the ugly to compensate them for becoming a smaller and smaller minority. That way every face lift performed it pays for one ugly person to get their bunions fixed or something.

I think for the ladies, properly applied make-up and a good fitting dress will already work wonders. Having said that I don't mind plastic surgery, if it was professionally done and subdued, for myself or others.

I am strongly against over-the-top surgery for excessive size or bizarre fashion trends.

In honesty, I am pretty happy with what I have, but surely you've noticed that plastic surgery seems to become an increasingly common option for those that can afford it (often with bad consequences).

With todays emphasis on beauty, it's hard to compete with the kind of perfection you see in magazines... *sigh*

It realy is no differant from the idea of makeup, or jewrly, or takeing care what cloths you wear, just a little more extreme. If peoiple what a differant nose, or bigger boobs, or a new pair of trainers, then it's their choice.

We all do things with our apperance to make us feel better, wether it be hair colour, mini skirt, facial hair, hair style, denim, bling, botox of or rhinoplasty, it's all the same and for the same reason. Hate plastic surgery then might as well hate hats!

Meh, any clothes designed to make the weare look superior or attractive are bad. Equally nakedness is bad. Equally anything designed to make the wearer look bad is bad. So we're all rather ****ed, really. So just go with the flow!

And of course, plastic surgery has one serious argument against it. This man:

I don't think they lose it, really... I think character and personality is something which just grows with life, and the harder your life is, the more it develops and grows. Attractive people tend to lead lives that are a bit easier and less rough, so in turn they often give me the feeling that their personality isn't really fully developed yet.
But that's just my impresstion, and there are definitely plenty of exceptions. There are plenty of attractive people who have great personality, and there are plenty of unattractive people who are simply gits.

Well, to keep this discussion intellectual, why don't we talk about what are the physical ideals that women would want plastic surgery to achieve.

Be happy with what you've got. :) I am not inclined to alter my appearance in any way to conform to today's expectations of 'beauty' (for want of a better word) and I am of the opinion that spending thousands to have botox injections or breast implants is a complete waste of money.

It is however your right to choose whether or not you want an 'enhancement', but you have to ask yourself; is it REALLY worth it?

Nope. Think of corsetry to make the waist tiny; think of tans now, or when beauty spots were the vogue; think of the eyes of nymphs and Venus statues, not really big eyes (though "bright-eyed Athena" of Homeric odes does put bright on the list), the demureness of Victorian women, and the asymmetry of the various Veni (its actually purposeful).

Personally, I just don't like this flawless appearance. It always makes me think that there have to be flaws, and if they're not in the looks, they have to be in the character...

They're called sane men and women. The Venus was a healthy and fit shape, which was obviously needed n those days when women didn't do much work except bear children and oversee the household; and when there were so many perils to childbirth, one needed to be fit and robust.

Well, it's usually pretty obvious when somebody has "had something done" so unless that sort of thing bothers you, then do whatever you want with your money. If I was going to have something done to alter my body, I'd go with the laser eye surgery. It's the only thing I can think of that might be worth the money.

On a related note, however, my coworker recently had a boob reduction. She was considered a size J (most of us think boob sizing stops at double D...guess what, it doens't) and not only was it unbelievably inconvenient for doing anything (like sitting at a diner booth, exercising, wearing clothes, etc) it also caused her bra straps to wear away her shoulder muscles, leaving permanent grooves in her skin. Plus the back problems. She said she would never go under the knife again because it's nervewracking and painful and generally a horrible experience, so I don't know how some people have cosmetic-type surgeries several times so that they're unrecognizable. Maybe they like pain.

In terms of 'famous', Jennifer Connelly, as she appeared in "Dark City" is a MUCH better role-model, I think. :)

(If you haven't seen "Dark City" - you probably should - http://www.beyondhollywood.com/moviepics/darkcity3.htm)

A balanced diet is good. The principle that is CALLED 'dieting' is bad for the body, because it's only effect on the metabolism is to make the body think it is starving, which puts us in 'starvation mode', and means we actually preferentially store fats.

Everyone has a 'right shape'... but it differs from body to body. And people shouldn't try to fit THEIR body into the 'shape' of a different one.
