Gay marriage is banned in the US and it doesn't really count for much in the UK.

But I am rather poor at the moment (I would have thought having a girlfriend would mean I had to go out less, but seemingly not), so a marriage in the Netherlands might be a laugh for a year or two.

Well, I think a civil union could be considered "partial gay marriage".

Nope, that would actually require an Amendment to the Constitution, since the Federal government doesn't currently have the power to do that. However, the Defense of Marriage Act allows the states to refuse to recognize same sex marriages from other states. I'm not sure how this gets around the Full Faith and Credit clause, but it seems to.
