Gamers, I need your help.

No, Jack Thompson isn't pushing legislation to ban violent videogames. I could merely use some advice.

I'm a Playstation fan, to a degree. I'm not one of those fanboys, so I will always go for what I like, and what I like is the Metal Gear Series.

My dilema is simple: the PS3, when released will be 600 dollars. That seems WAY too much for a video game system. So I have been looking into the Xbox360, and I have found that many of the games coming out on that system look very good, and the fact that two of my favorite games from the Playstation will be released on that system, Armored Core 4 and Grand Theft Auto IV doesn't hurt it either.

I know it seems silly to hold out for a system for a single game, but I can't get it out of my head. I need your advice humble gamers of NS: Should I wait for the PS3 and shell out the cash for a few games that I'll love, or should I bite the bullet and go after the Xbox360 and join the Halo Confederation?

(Yeah, melodramatic. So sue me)

(And yeah, I looked into the Wii. It has great promise, but I doesn't have what I'm looking for)

Unless you absolutely have to have it as soon as it comes out, wait a few months to see if the games live up to their expectations. You'll get a better idea of how the consoles shape up comparatively that way and possibly see a lowered price (unlikely, but possible).

That's my plan, anyway. Enough good PS2 games are still unreleased for me to think about purchasing a PS3. I'll wait until the current gen is exhausted.

does your PS2 still work?

me, I would wait before picking up a PS3 or an XBOX360 to see what the library would be like. after a while the prices will come down. and if you hunt for them some Used Systems are just as good, but cheaper.

At this point I'm a fan of RPGs and action games. Playstation may have Final Fantasy, but Final Fantasy is just one rehash after another.

The Wii just doesn't have what I'm looking for.

One advantage the PS3 will have over the 360 is true backwards compatibility. Unlike the 360 where you have to load special patches online for your X-Box games so you can play them (and even there aren't even patches available for *all* the games out there), the PS3 has been stated so that every PlayStation game in history will be playable on it without any extra hardware or software required.

making it starting with a large library and for people with PS or PS2 games, an already established library. a big plus in my book.

Aye, which makes my conundrum even more complex.

What I'm really worried about is shelling out 600 bucks, and the Playstation 3 flops due to low sales because of price. Then I'll be stuck with a dead system that I won't be able to get rid of without significant downmarking.

Personally, I would say no to getting an Xbox360 because it has nothing that interests me. Whether or not to get a PS3 is a different question. I suspect it will be a good idea. I think it has both a $500 & $600 model, and both will play blu-ray discs. The first blu-ray player that will be released is a Samsung model that is going to cost $1000.

WEll, if you like GTA get the 360. It's been released that there's a high possiblility maybe even probability that Rockstar has signed exclusivety with microsoft with all forth coming titles.

Honestly I would say to wait until the games announced have a "round-a-bout" date for release, because right now according to Gamespot, there is only one RPG game projected to launch same-date as the console itself (http://www.gamespot.com/games.html?type=games&category=Role-Playing&platform=1028&mode=all&sort=views&dlx_type=all)

Now for Action/Adventure titles I would say that the most hopeful game looks to me like Assassin's Creed, but alas, an unknown 2007 release. Actually, there doesn't seem to be too many games coming out with console for this genre.

If I were you, I would save my money, and wait for the PS3s' library to grow, or for definate dates to be set oon the games you want.

oh yeah, and stay away from the 360, it's a gift from satan :p

I'd wait for the PS3. The systems themselves have vary similar capacities. The differance however, is going to be in the games. If you're a fan of RPGs, that means the PS3 has a big advantage in exclusive content. Secondly, and this is extremely important, PS3 games will be produced on Blue Ray discs. Every XBox360 game ever made will be produced on the old DVDs, which have a much smaller capacity. This means PS3 games will have way more content, which is especially important for the RPG genre.

The PS3 was a huge dissappointment at E3.

The graphics look no better (and worse most of the time) than the Xbox360's, many of the promised features and specs were not delivered, the controller is basically the old controller, without the rumble, and the price tag is crippling.

I say get into PC gaming, or if you have to, wait until it comes out and THEN make your decision.

xbox does have plenty of good games in the running, so i would advise getting a 360. but then i am an xbox fanboy so take that with a pinch of salt...

you could always get a 360 (they're coming down in price slowly - can now get one for about 210 quid) and then get a ps3 this time next year after the competition starts driving the prices down. that way you get an excellent gaming system for a year, and then the game you want too :)
just take a bit of saving up is all :P

also be aware the 360 is HD DVD compatible and you can stream content off your pc onto your tv (which is way cool and i want to do it), and also that by the time the ps3 comes out, 360 will be on its second generation of games, which means using more features, better graphics, and just more goodness

don't forget what a big waste of time it'll be if Blu-Ray flops.
which, with only a couple of companies supporting it, compared to seemingly most of the rest of the industry supporting HDDVD, it seems likely to happen...

Assassin's Creed was running on a 360 at E3. *snickers*

I have a 360 right now, and I'm not disappointed in it at all. I will admit that the PS3 does look pretty awesome, but I don't have $600 for it. Both of them look like great systems, but it really depends.

You said you liked RPGs. The 360 does have some promising ones on the rise (Mass Effect - from guys who did KOTOR), but I think PS3 will have equally/better ones (the Japanese always make great ones).

Action games is kind of a broad genre. If you mean shooting games, then I think 360 will prevail. Not just cause of Halo 3, mind you. We got Ghost Recon, Battlefield...hmm....what's that other one called? Gears of War!!!
Crysis, Unreal, Call of Duty 3, Brothers in Arms 3, Medal of Honor: Airborne...the list just goes on.

I have always hung onto the notion that you wait and hear about a system or game before you actually buy it. I decided to ignore my advice with Civilization 4 however when it first came out and wow was I foolish. There were so many bugs etc with that game, and the graphic cards could not keep up when it first came out. Had I waited I would have gotten it for cheaper, and spared the stress of trying to get it to work (though I was able to help others in how to fix it on their systems). My suggestion therefore would be to go Xbox 360 cause though PS3 is probably gonna be better, you never know whether it will have bugs or not. Furthermore, whether you hate Bill Gates or not, Microsoft has awesome customer service while Sony customer service reps are either clueless or jerks I have found in the past (and if some Sony rep is reading this feel free to ask me about my experience with Evercrack, I will be all to happy to expound upon this).

Again in the end you probably already know your decision and if you really are digging the PS3 specs etc then hey it is only 6 months away (we hope). However though it is sure to be a great hit, will it have any gliches may be of a concern to you (though realistically you will get a replacement but then how long will that take now)...

My advice is to go with the 360, and open up to some other potential games. I'd say give Oblivion on a console a shot. It's devoured my life. Besides that, Ghost Recon, Condemned and Perfect Dark Zero are also very enjoyable. Halo 3 will also be a treat.

Of course, I've got access to a 360 because my roommate bought one, so I've got the best of all worlds. A 360 and the cash that would have been spent to purchase it.

I love shooters, 3rd person and FPS, but because of my console choices in the past, and the fact that I own a Mac kinda puts a damper on it. I could definately go for some Halo 3, Battlefield and F.E.A.R, which I have just learned will be released on the 360 later this year.

Remember one thing about the 360: Every game that comes out for it will come out for the PC. Therefore, just get comparable PC and play them there.

The PS3 is quite clearly superior to all the others. Blu-ray disks take up to 200gb (holy shit!) of data. Do you know what that means? 20000000480 bytes of stuff. Content, graphics, you name it, it's there. Even if the ps3 floundered, you'd have a blu-ray disk player. The only other blu-ray players available within the next few months will be those 1k-3k players and Apple's intel replacement for the PowerMac (which will have a bluray burner).
Essentially, here are the options you have:

Wii: Crappiest system spec-wise. It will have a few good games (namely the ones nintendo makes, like super smash bros rumble and zelda twilight princess.) Like the n64 and the gamecube before it, it will be bought for kiddies who can't play anything other than E games. They deserve a big kudos for changing the way games are played.

360: Second in line specwise. The games will be on dvds, meaning anything they try to compete with the ps3 will be on 4 disks. It doesn't have real HD capacity, only movies. News flash microsoft, it's supposed to be a game system. Like I said before, any game you really want for this WILL be on the PC. Including Halo, KOTOR, and all those other worthwhile games.

ps3: All those specs, a controller that works the same way wii's does (an admittedly microsoftey move, fellow mac users will understand what I'm saying ;)). Blu-ray disks are reportedly unscratchable by steel wool, most of the cool games for the 360 will be here too (namely, GTA4, etc). Backwards compatibility to all the classics in your collection... It's obivously the best buy.

The controller has no rumble?

big fucking deal.

The only reason it doesn't is because everyone went spastic when they showcased the boomerang controller. You can choose between the two, btw.

Man I gotta rant some....

Sony has really pissed me off with the whole PS3 bullshit. I was looking forward to it. I planned to buy 360 and PS3 (would mug old ladies if I had to!) and ignore nintendo (sorry). Then a few things happened.

1. I bought a 360 and have to say I'm VERY impressed. The graphics card is supposed to be more sophisitacted than PS3 though running slightly slower. I don't care - it looks good will do for me.
2. Sheer price cost of PS3 - they slated Microsoft big stylee for releasing a 2 tier console package and then go and do it themselves at EXTORTIONATE costs. I read an article where one of the chairman said Sony can charge whatever they want cos people will pay it. Sadly this is true - Sony are taking the piss out of all of you.
3. Sony's theft of ideas - ok so Microsoft took the double shoulder option, but now Sony has included triggers and a guide button - hmmm... wonder where they got the idea for that eh? They've ripped off x-box live to the letter! They had no plans for motion sensors until they saw Wii and by no way does the basic tilt of the PS3 controller even compare to what Nintendo has come up with.

I could go on but i've probably bored you all already so I'm sorry.

BUT... my advice - don't believe the hype - play them first. Check out Nintendo's website - the Wii is looking like great fun! My inner fanboy will be getting one. Nintendo are the only true innovator of ideas!

360 ftw I'd say. My view is largely unbiased, having indirectly and directly) owned both PS2, Xbox and the 360 (my brother had the PS2, hence the indirectly bit). Of course, I may be somewhat biased towards the Xbox, but then... meh, who cares? :D

If you're worried about cost what on earth are you considering the PS3 for? You said it yourself, it is actually sinfully expensive, and when all's said and done, what will it have that the 360 doesn't? ... ... Not much I hear you cry! Well, there's probably a couple of bits and bobs, special features, but in the end you're buying it for the games right? Special features that no-one uses... pfft I say. Nuts to them. Microsoft have more game-making power, even if not by overly much, but it's only gonna grow. How many games are exclusive to Sony now compared to how many were a few years ago?

And as for games, 360 again comes out on top. Halo 3, KOTOR 3, Oblivion (unless that's coming out on PS3?) and all of these with silky-smooth ameplay and graphics. And do you really want to entrust your prize games to a system whos prototype model melted in factory?

Hmm... I'm sure there was something else I wanted to say, but I can't remember what it was. Trust me though, it was a totally convincing and crushing argument in favour of the 360, I promise.

Oh and for all those blu-ray bois out there, Microsoft have the power of HD-DVD, so don't go besnubbing them just yet.
