Literary Madness

Just as a curiosity thing, I wanted to know if anyone shared my opinion on this. I have noticed lately (allthough you would have to be blind not to) That there is more and more controversy over some of of the stupidest things. Of all the dumb things, I would have to say the dumbest is BOOKS. People are all p/o about the da vinci code, angels and demons, basically anything of that nature. What makes me angry is this simple fact: IT'S A DAMN BOOK! Written to be enjoyed and read, and probably with the thought of a nice nest egg to sit on eventually! Who cares what it says? If you read it and are ofended, ok. It's not all that big a deal, life goes on. If you read it and just don't like it, don't read it again. Simple, right? I just don't understand why everything people do anymore has to be turned into such a big pile of bullcrap. :headbang:

Because they're small-minded blighters who do what the Church tells them to because they aren't allowed to think for themselves.

I object to the Da Vinci Code because it's shit. I've reaed a bit of it but it hasn't been a fun book and I knowe the basic plot already.

Mind you, my Catholic cousin has a copy so I might nick it and have another try.

At least you're objecting because you don't like the way it's written. That's the smart way to do it.

Exactly. i can understand that, but the hubbub over the book offending people pisses me off. I want to be a hermit when i grow up. No tv, no radio, just me and my pet rock.

I'll keep to myself about the religion, that sort of topic always starts fight. But I know enough about art to catch some mistakes in the authors research on that end, and that bothers me a bit.

Overall, I have to agree, this sort of thing gets out of hand alot. If you don't like a book, don't buy anymore by that author. It's that easy.

Is there anyone who thinks here that some books ought to be banned? Or would you consider that to be a very bad prescedent, ending in a sort of fahrenheit 451 scenario?

The reason I ask this, is because a book like mein kampf is "verboten" in my country (netherlands), is this a restriction that is defendable (because of historical background), or is this wrong?

If we ban books because of historical events or because of content, it is indicative of society's immaturity. If we don't ban or censor books we are showing our maturity. Unless a book breaches the law deliberately, there should be no reason to curb literary freedom. Fiction is fiction.

Its not as though its claiming to be a text book or anything, its never been supposed to be anything more than a novel. I havent read it myslef, but I imagine Il see the film. anything the catholic church objects to has to be good.

It objects to premarital sex, gluttony and all the fun stuff in life, which we've discovered is fun! So, they must be hiding something...

Same here. I also object to it because the first page claims it's 'true fact', when it's complete and utter shit.

Banning any book is a step in the wrong direction. Books like Mein Kampf in particular should NOT be banned. We need books like that for the same reason we need the nazi prison camps open to the public and on display. People need to know what happened before so we can avoid making the same errors.
