The "Criticise Your Heroes" Thread

Pretty simple premise-

In an attempt to show people that the great thinkers, activists, politicians, economists, revolutionaries etc of the world have all been human beings and so are subsequently flawed, and furthermore to illustrate that you don't blindly follow dogma, I think you should criticise at least one aspect of your heroes.

Here we go-

Marx was most likely a homophobe.

Lenin was wrong to attack Poland.

Trotsky did not fight hard enough against Stalin in the power struggle.

George W Bush is not very articulate.

I have to disagree with that one.

Whenever he talks favorably about charity, compassion, or good sense he is inarticulate. Whenever he talks about killing people or making people miserable he's so articulate as to seem almost quick-witted.

What he is is a terrible liar. Only thing is, he lies so much that all his usual "tells" are atributed to a lack of eloquence. It's like being a poker player who bluffs on all his hands. The good ones and the bad ones. How do you know when he's bluffing?

Don't be taken in by the western press of His Holiness. HH is actually quite consevative and old school - he's pretty close to the catholic pope on several matters, praticularly sexual. Homosexuality, oral sex, anal sex, and "recreational" sex are all no-nos. (Consider that my first criticism of a hero - seeing as I'm a Buddhist.)

Christ thought he was a god. (I'm so expecting to get flamed for that one...)

Theodore Roosevelt was overly moralist and jingoistic. He was also a bit of a bully.

Thomas Jefferson owned slaves.

Abraham Lincoln was a terrible racist. He also did terrible things to preserve the union.

Nixon was excessively paranoid.

Booker T. Washington probably emphasised economic equality too much over social equality.

Winston Churchill was responsible for the disaster of Gallipoli.

Machiavelli was not the military writer he thought he was when he wrote The Art of War.

- Mishima Yukio was more or less a fanatic, a coup-plotter, and in fierce denial about his sexuality.
- Stanley Kubrick had a tendency to put the screws to people he worked with in a rather nasty sort of way.
